TecToy relaunching limited edition Mega Drive in Brazil next year

originalWhile I wrote about what SEGA could learn about the NES Mini, I made reference to a lot of TecToy releases of the Mega Drive. TecToy has re-released the Mega Drive over in Brazil many times, but this time they are taking a note from the NES Mini and keeping the original form factor. Above is the photo of their limited edition Mega Drive.

The limited edition Mega Drive will  come with 22 pre-installed games, support original cartridges, come with one controller and a micro SD slot. Sadly the limited edition Mega Drive only supports composite output. That means no HDMI port. The 22 pre-installed games are a mix bag, while you have your Golden Axe and Shinobi titles, it seems lots of big names are missing. Hit the jump to see all 22 pre-installed games. This console is being aimed at a different audience than us, so maybe these titles are more popular in that region.

The console is up for pre-order now on TecToy’s website, they are charging R$ 399,00 ($125 USD). Which is more than double the price of the NES Mini, is having a working cartridge slot worth the extra cash?

I’m from Brazil and I can say many people are excited about this, but at the same time many are disappointed with the lack of a HDMI output as well. The games selection is also considered a mixbag over here, since Fatal Labyrinth and OutRunners were not very popular here either, and some people wish they’d have Streets of Rage and the regular version of OutRun instead. But all in all, people are really talking about it over here.

The main reason being that there are hardware components that are not made anymore. So it has a hardware that is close but not quite the original. And these games worked fine with their tests.

The SD cart slot is the most compelling feature to me, since I still have an original model 1 Genesis. I think the big question at this point is – will it have great sound like the model 1, or will it have the kind of poor audio emulation that have plagued the clone consoles for years?

It’s a bit expensive for our standards but I’ll try to purchase it

It’s a shame that TecToy does not support selling from outside of Brazil, even in the official website.
I think they could easily sell the produts over worldwide, providing the shipping costs be paid… Unfortunate…

I have no complaints about the game selections. I would definitely try to purchase this!

  6. Hopefully it has vastly improved emulation for the price. Brazil is a very different market from North American territories, but it’s weird to me that this has even less built in games than any AtGames produced Genesis clone. Still, as far as I’m aware AtGames and TecToy are very different companies and I don’t know what TecToy’s Genesis consoles these days are like, so hopefully it’s at least got emulation right. Otherwise, talk about one step forward and two steps back.

It´s not an emulator. They were the official Sega manufacturer in Brazil in the 80’s and 90’s and they rebuilt the hardware with similar components, and a SD card slot. So doesn’t matter woh many built-in games it has, you can put all collection on the SD card.
