The holiday season is fast approaching, and like SEGA’s speedy blue mascot it’ll be here before you know it! In fact, it’s already here! Don’t fret, as we’re here to help you out with some gift giving ideas for the SEGA and Sonic fans in your life, or if you have some gift cards burning a hole in your pocket you might like some of our suggestions for yourself.

So read on as we take a look at the best SEGA and Sonic gifts on offer this holiday season!

Best gift for the Sonic fan in your life: Sonic & Tails Countdown Characters by Numskull

These were the seasonal items I was most excited for this year, particularly the Tails which is new for the 2023 season! A few years back, Numskull released a very cool Sonic statue that you put together piece by piece over the 25 days leading up to Christmas. What I loved so much about it was that unlike many of the Sonic statues out there, this one was a unique design not seen anywhere else AND it features one of my favorite Sonic video game stages: Ice Cap Zone!

The Tails statue joins Sonic on the slopes and like the Sonic statue, is a brand new design located in Ice Cap Zone. Each day you open a numbered drawer on a nicely designed box and slowly build up the cutest two tailed fox you’ve ever seen. Make sure to check us out on Instagram and YouTube as we plan to post short videos each day in December of the Tails build.

Best gift for your friend who grew up playing Sonic 2 with you: Sonic Superstars

Sonic Superstars is Sonic’s latest adventure, but looking at the character model you’d be forgiven for thinking this was a retro remake or long lost classic adventure. However Superstars is a brand new game from Sonic Team and Arzest. The original designer of Sonic, Naoto Ohshima, returns to the franchise with new gameplay elements, including emerald powers, and a classic twist on the multiplayer modes first seen in Sonic 2. Now, up to four players can play through the game in local multiplayer. As such, this game would make for the perfect gift for that longtime friend who you played Sonic with as a kid, and would love to revive those memories in Superstars.

Best gift for that annoying friend who says SEGA hasn’t made a good game since [insert date from the 1990s here]: Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name

Hear me out: I know Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name is not only a mouthful, but is also the eighth (ninth?) adventure for Yakuza/Like a Dragon franchise star Kazuma Kiryu. So to ask a newcomer to check this game out despite not having played any of the others is a risky move, but I feel that the game gives the character enough of a fresh start that players going in blind should not have too much trouble getting into the game without years worth of backstory inside their head. The game itself sets things up nicely, presenting a former Yakuza in hiding taking on a new name and role only to have it all unravel as his cover is blown. The game is short enough, by Yakuza/Like a Dragon standards, to give players a great sampling of what the franchise is all about AND it leads into the next title in the series Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth which conveniently enough has a demo included within the game itself.

Best gift for that friend who loves classic SEGA arcade titles: Air Twister

Leave it to that mad lad Yu Suzuki to give us a modern take on his classic SEGA arcade title Space Harrier by creating a whole new fantasy world filled with deep lore and crazy visuals like a woman riding a flying elephant fighting a clock. Air Twister was an Apple Arcade exclusive, but it has since released to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 and 5. The company Strictly Limited Games has teamed with developer YS NET Inc. to bring fans a physical release for the west in both limited and collector’s editions. The limited versions are available now while the collector’s editions will ship next year, so if your friend is okay with an I.O.U. they would enjoy this gift.

Best gift for the classic fan in your life: Sonic Origins Plus

Sonic Origins first released last year as a digital only offering of Sonic’s classic adventures, but now the title is available both digitally and physically as Sonic Origins Plus! The Plus upgrade offers gameplay refinements, every single Sonic Game Gear title and playable Amy Rose in every single game, as well as several other additions. Fans of physical will enjoy the bonus art book and reversible cover

Best gift for that Sonic loving friend who has everything: Sonic Superstars Limited Edition Import

You know that type of friend, they love the Sonic franchise and buy every game as it releases. It’s pointless to buy them the latest game because they already own it. But do they import? Likely not, and this release is well worth the double dip. Released in Asia territories and China, the Sonic Superstars Limited Edition comes inside a big beautiful box and offers up the game (which is region free), a cool little figure of Sonic holding an emerald, a framed picture of Sonic featuring reproduction autographs from Takashi Iizuka and Naoto Ohshima, an acrylic display and an enamel pin of Sonic running. Who knows, your friend might just give you their duplicate copy of the game and keep all the cool collectible items?

Best gift for the retro gamer in your life: Retro-Bit Offical SEGA Saturn Controllers

I love all the controllers on offer from Retro-Bit. Aside from the company name evoking our own name, the controllers themselves are very well built and are officially licensed by SEGA! That means you get molds and logos that feel like they game straight from the 80s and 90s but with modern day quality of life improvements. While they have some pro pads in the works, I always recommend their SEGA Saturn wireless controllers. The 2.4 GHz wireless controller is that iconic and comfortable Japanese Sega Saturn design, and works with the original console as well as the Sega Genesis Mini, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 3, PC and Mac. In addition to the pad, the package includes two receivers  and a storage case.

Best gift for the Dreamcast fan in your life: Hallmark Keepsake SEGA Dreamcast ornament

This might be the best new ornament of the year. Following up from their SEGA Genesis ornament, Hallmark is back with an awesome miniature SEGA Dreamcast complete with controller that lights up when powered on to show a pixelated Sonic VMU screen and Sonic Adventure’s Emerald Coast music. The only thing missing is the disc grinding noise and loud beep telling you to replace your VMU’s batteries.

Best gift for the art collector in your life: Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog animation art

Over the past five years I’ve become a huge fan of Animation Legends, their blind box approach to animation art has made it fun and affordable to collect production artwork from some of my favorite childhood cartoons. Of course, I am a huge Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog fan, and when I saw that they offered both animation cel blind bags (long sold out) and animation sketch art blind bags (still in stock!) I bought dozens of original artwork and more often than not absolutely loved what I got! Right now they still have pencil art from AoStH and I cannot recommend it enough. Best gift for the low energy Amy Rose fan in your life: Amy’s Strawberry Shortcake Collector’s Box

Energy drink company G FUEL has once again expanded the character roster of Sonic and friends flavors, this time shining the spotlight on Amy Rose who turned 30 this year (but doesn’t look it). Amy Rose’s flavor is Strawberry Shortcake, and with a tub of her energy powder fans can also get a very nicely made metal shaker in a collector’s box. This is a must have for the Amy fan in your life who is always taking a nap.
