Sega Genesis Mini 3 announced for North America and Japan exclusively; Details and first 10 games revealed (April Fools)

Sega, out of nowhere, just announced their newest mini console and successor to the Sega Genesis Mini 2. The Sega Genesis Mini 3 will be releasing on October 16th, 2024 exclusively in North America and Japan (Sorry, Europe, but you better get ready to import.) Unlike the previous two Genesis Mini plug-and-play consoles, this console will release in the exact same condition both in North America and Europe, as the Majesco-built Genesis 3 console was released originally only in North America. This means the console will have the exact same game lineup worldwide and will be known as the Genesis Mini 3 even in Japan.

At the same time, Sega have revealed that the console will include 50 games while also revealing what the first 10 games will be. Like with the previous two Genesis Minis, more games will be revealed gradually throughout the year before the console’s retail release. To find out what the first ten games are, check in after the break while containing your excitement.

So far, 10 of the 50 games revealed by Sega to be included on the Sega Genesis Mini 3 will be:

  1. Ariel: The Little Mermaid (1992)
  2. Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure (1994)
  3. Red Zone (1994)
  4. Insector X (1990)
  5. Lethal Enforcers (1994)
  6. Frogger (1998)
  7. OutRun 2019 (1993)
  8. Outrunners (1994)
  9. Landstalker: The Treasure of King Nole (1993)
  10. Sonic Classics (1997)

A couple of special notes about the chosen games have been clarified in a press release by Sega. According to that press release, the games chosen will have a very “American focus”, but that does not necessarily mean they will stick exclusively with games developed in America, so we are not sure what they mean by this just yet. Hopefully, that will become more clear later on. They also clarified that there will be no Sega CD games included this time. We understand that the original Genesis 3 was incompatible with the Sega CD, but even so, this is rather disappointing news. Probably for the best to tell us this straight away, I suppose. Finally, when asked about why they are reusing some games that were already in previous Genesis Mini consoles, such as Landstalker and OutRunners, Sega simply denied that those games were in previous consoles at all and said they didn’t know why people thought they were.

They also actually deconfimed one game. They considered adding Disney’s Gargoyles and having the game completely non-functional due to the original game’s incompatibility with the Genesis 3, but Disney warned Sega that the joke may not go over so well with players and granted them permission to use Ariel: The Little Mermaid instead.

Sega have also revealed that the menu music is going to be composed, not by Yuzo Koshiro this time, but by the amazing Tommy Tallarico, who has the honor of holding the Guinness World Record for having worked on the most video games of any video game composer, as well as the honor of being the first American man to work officially on a Sonic the Hedgehog game, thanks to his contributions to Sonic & The Black Knight. (Sources pending) Sega also mentioned that his mother is very proud of him for this.

As of now, pre-order info will come at a later date, so keep it here at Segabits to learn more when that time comes. In the meantime, tell us in the comments below your thoughts on the Sega Genesis Mini 3. Will you be picking one up? Do you like the chosen games so far? What games are you hoping to see included?

So when are we gonna get the mini whose games are Europe focused? Maybe a MultiMega Mini? Not buying an American-focused machine, even on import.
