Four years after Analogue called it quits with the Mega SG, the console clone is back again with a few modern touch-ups.
The Mega SG+ (Along with its SNES counterpart, the Super NT+) is coming back for another go around and pre-orders start October 19th, 2026. That’s right. Today at 8 PM PST, as of this writing. The console leverages the power of FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) hardware to provide an upgraded Genesis/Mega-Drive gameplay experience compatible with modern HDTVs, just as the Mega SG did before it. It’s compatible with all your Genesis and Mega-Drive game cartridges and accessories, and with an original Sega CD or one of Analogue’s cartridge adaptors, it can also play Sega CD, Master System, Mark III, Game Gear, and SG-1000 games while providing the same modern upgrades.
For more deets on what upgrades set the Mega SG+ apart from the Mega SG (Which, btw, launched its own pre-orders eight years ago. Age waits for no one.), take a dive past the break and read on.

Like the Mega SG, this clone console is designed with FPGA hardware tailor made to function almost exactly as original Genesis hardware did. While it is a form of emulation, it functioned with an unmatched level of accuracy to original hardware. However, it can run your games over HDMI at 1080p on any modern TV with the greatest of ease and little to no lag. It also gives you a staggering degree of customization to adjust the visual and audio settings to your liking. It comes with a free Master System cartridge adaptor, while adaptors for Sega MyCards and Mark III, SG-1000, and Game Gear games are sold separately just like before.
So what does the Mega SG+ have that the original Mega SG didn’t? Mostly just little modern niceties. Here’s what they are:
- Built-in Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz wireless controller support for up to two controllers. This way you could easily connect Bluetooth controllers that didn’t have a dedicated Genesis controller port dongle, such as PlayStation 4 or 5, Nintendo Switch, or Steam Controllers. Wired and dongled controllers still take priority if they’re plugged in.
- USB-C connector for power, as well as a free USB-C cable and power adaptor included in the box, because USB-C wasn’t as common in the 2010’s as it is now. (It’s also much easier to plug in compared to the old Micro USB connection.)
- Hot-swappable cartridge functionality, so you can shut off a game from the built-in menu and change game cartridges without having to get up and physically shut off the console’s power, if you wish.
- Power on/off the console using the controller instead of pressing the console’s power button, again, if you wish. If the console is powered off, you can turn it on by pressing start on the Player 1 controller or turning on a paired Bluetooth controller.
- Refined industrial design and packaging. No specifics on these were detailed.
All of these upgrades also apply to the Super NT+ over the original Super NT.
Analogue also pointed out that neither the Mega SG+, nor the Super NT+, includes any of the newer software stuff that Analogue’s consoles after the Mega SG had, such as OpenFPGA, or any of the Analogue 3D‘s software features like save states or screenshots. The MegaSG+ also no longer includes Ultracore as its built-in game. In fact, there aren’t any built-in games this time.

If you had a Mega SG, then it’s up to you if any of these differences are enough of an upgrade for you to want to buy one. If you never managed to get a Mega SG and wish you did, then buying a slightly upgraded new version will cost you a lot less than what second hand Mega SGs typically go for online, that’s for sure. You can pre-order one directly from Analogue for $219.99 USD in the same USA, EU, and JPN color schemes the Mega SG came in. (The Super NT+ can also be pre-ordered for the same cost. You know… if you’re into that sorta thing.) Analogue’s Mega SG cartridge adaptors are also still readily available for purchase through them. (They don’t work on original Genesis consoles though. Trust me. I’ve tried.)
Will you be pre-ordering a Mega SG+? Do you have a Mega SG already? And if you do, would you be willing to buy a Mega SG+ as well, or does the old model still satisfy you? Give us the skinny in the comments below.
