SEGA joins the DOTA clone train, picks up Chaos Heroes Online

Ever since the free-to-play DOTA clone, Leagues of Legends ranked up millions and millions of players many publishers have tried to replicate its success. Seems that SEGA is now one of the publishers picking up the Japanese DOTA clone Chaos Heroes Online.

SEGA is picking up the title to localize in Japan, this was developed by Korean developer Neoact. The game is set to start service this spring and will be free-to-play.

Ex-Gearbox employee says game was outsourced, SEGA denies (sort of)

Aliens
Well, seems that Aliens: Colonial Marines isn’t being as well received as we would have hoped and now everyone is pointing fingers. First comes a statement made by a ex-Gearbox employee, stating that Gearbox didn’t really develop most of the title and that the game was outsourced. The anonymous employee who goes by the forum handle “mugwurt” posted:

“Hate to say it, but I wouldn’t get your hopes up too high for Colonial Marines. I used to work at Gearbox, and the development of that game has been a total train wreck, going on what, 6 years now? Gearbox isn’t even making the game, except for the multiplayer. Primary development was outsourced to TimeGate Studios, which has a less than stellar past.” – Link to response

When asked about this, SEGA’s Senior Producer Matthew J. Powers had this to say:

Review: The Cave

How could I not be excited for The Cave when SEGA was publishing, Double Fine was developing, and the man behind The Secret of Monkey Island, Ron Gilbert, was behind this title? Now that I have finished the game, was it everything that I expected it to be? Were my hopes too high? Read on and find out.

Rumor: SEGA All-Stars developer working on LittleBigPlanet 3

Relax, I know that Sumo Digital isn’t owned by SEGA and that this technically isn’t SEGA news, but I decided to share it since we like Sumo Digital. The rumor is that Sumo Digital, the developers of SEGA All-Stars games, are working on LittleBigPlanet 3.

The rumor states that Sony approached the developer well over a year ago to work on the upcoming title. I guess the original developer, Media Molecule is too busy doing a new franchise that they will be outsourcing LittleBigPlanet 3 to Sumo. How does this make me feel? Happy! I’m glad good people are getting big projects. I just hope that there isn’t a buy out. I know that the guys at Sumo Digital like being independent and I would love them to stay that way. Why? So they can make some more great SEGA games.

Aliens: Colonial Marines “Bug Mode” coming in March

We posted that Aliens: Colonial Marines was going to get a season pass, this obviously means that DLC was going to be announced very soon and guess what? Here is the first pack, titled “Bug Mode”. If you pick up the upcoming Aliens: Colonial Marines at Wal-Mart, you will get the Bug Mode DLC for free. How much does it cost solo? Well, Gearbox Software  or SEGA haven’t revealed that just yet. Wal-Mart says its a ‘$14.99 dollar value’.

We also posted about the season pass DLC here before, back then the season pass  was only confirmed for PC. Now Gearbox has confirmed it for all consoles. You pay $29.99 dollars now and you recieve all four DLC packs at a discounted rate. If the first ‘Bug Mode’ is going to cost $14.99, then that is a pretty good deal. Bug Mode will basically be Horde Mode (Gears of War) or Invasion Mode (Binary Domain). Basically you and friends take on waves of enemies that increase in difficulty as you progress.

Microsoft didn’t aquire SEGA due to lack of ‘muscle’

Right now Microsoft is a big player in the game console race, but a decade ago they weren’t in the same position as they are now. Like a bad stereotype, before Microsoft entered the market with the Xbox, there were tons of rumors about them purchasing a gaming company, and one of those comapnies was SEGA.

So why didn’t Microsoft ever pick up SEGA? Well, according to then-CEO Bill Gates, he thought that the house of Sonic lacked the ‘muscle’ to compete with a company like Sony. This is what Joachim Kempin, who worked at Microsoft from 1983 to 2003, had to say:

“There were three companies at that point in time, I think this was [Sony,] Sega and Nintendo. There was always talk maybe we buy Sega or something like that; that never materialized, but we were actually able to license them what they call Windows CE, the younger brother of Windows, to run on their system and make that their platform. But for Bill [Gates] this wasn’t enough, he didn’t think that Sega had enough muscle to eventually stop Sony so we did our own Xbox thing.”

He did state that SEGA was “a very different bird” which we can all agree. But its not like they hated everything SEGA did, I mean, they did put the Xbox in the hands of Dreamcast era SEGA COO Peter Moore.

New long Phantasy Star Online 2 Vita trailer is long

SEGA Japan has released a new trailer for Phantasy Star Online 2 for the Playstation Vita. The PC version has been released in Japan since early last year and now they are preparing to release the Vita version this February. Yes, the Vita version will also be free to download and play, which of course is awesome.

The best news? You will be able to play with PC players on the Vita and also use ‘character data transfer’.

First look at Sonic Universe #52

We already know that Archie Comics was planning on doing a Sonic the Hedgehog x Mega Man crossover entitled “Worlds Collide”. This new first look at Sonic Universe #52 takes place five issues into the new exciting arc (which is set to be 12 issues long).

Patrick “SPAZ” Spaziante has cover duty. Check out the variants allowing you to choose eitther Team Sonic or Team Mega Man. I think you all know who I’m rooting for. Hit the jump for more information.

GameStop posts Aliens: Colonial Marines DLC season pass prices

Sadly SEGA has had a pretty bad history of DLC, sometimes promising that they will release content for a game then hush up after they release a few pieces of content. It seems they will try to fix this issue with Aliens: Colonial Marines by offering season passes priced at $29.99 (this price being 33% off if you buy the four packs they include individually). It is said that these packs will include new “campaign content, additional multiplayer maps, new modes, character customization and more.”

One more tidbit, the season passes are only being posted for the PC version of the game. I’m assuming they will also be released for their console brethren, but who knows. Remember SEGA dropping support for AVP on consoles? Could the console version of this game also be an inferior version? I guess we will find out when it is released.

Bayonetta coming to PSN digital download service for only $19.99

If for some reason you haven’t picked up a physical copy of the critically acclaimed Bayonetta, now is your chance to get it for only $19.99 without leaving the comfort of your couch. SEGA is releasing their action intense game on PSN on January 29th (U.S, Europe gets it on the 30th) for only $19.99 (£14.99)!

Sadly this version isn’t as good as the 360 version, which by the way is already available to download from their digital store. If you don’t have a Xbox 360, I would say its still worth the $19.99.

Ikaruga gets ported to Android devices, dodge bullets on the go

http://youtu.be/cbmCCjDC67c
Ikaruga is probably one of my favorite shoot ’em ups during the Dreamcast era, created originally for the SEGA NAOMI board. This little bugger has seen its fair share of ports, including the Gamecube, Xbox 360 and now Android powered devices. How much are they charging for this masterpiece? $9.

So head over to the Play Store and pluck down some money and if you haven’t played it, do so please.

Aliens: Colonial Marines PC specs released

Aliens: Colonial Marines PC specs are released and they aren’t that bad, at least not in my opinion. It even supports Windows XP SP3, for those few of you who are still refusing to upgrade to Windows 7 or 8. Yes, I’m ignoring the existance of Vista. Check out the specs by hitting the jump.

SEGA comes in at sixth place in UK for 2012 video game publishers

So how does this list work? How does a publisher move up and down in ranking? Well, it’s simple. Basically they have to sell a butt-load of games. SEGA came in sixth, barely being bested by Microsoft and beating publishers like Warner Bros. and Take Two. EA got number one publisher of the year due to releases like Fifa 13, Mass Effect 3 and Need for Speed: Most Wanted. SEGA had a weird 2012, with the company shifting its focus from retail titles to a more digital array with the release of ports like NiGHTS, Jet Set Radio and even original titles like Hell Yeah! . Not to mention, their titles that did get released in retail didn’t do so hot like Binary Domain and Yakuza: Dead Souls. But hey, there’s always the Football Manager titles.
