Sonic making his return to Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

[Sonic the Hedgehog, rocking Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in 1993]

Back in 1993, Sonic the Hedgehog broke ground for video games by being the first video game character to be featured in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Now SEGA has confirmed that Sonic will be returning to the parade this year.

For those readers that love their parades, this parade will take place on November 24th. If you live in New York and attend, send us pictures. We love pictures.

SEGA and BBC Earth team up to fuse technology and nature

That’s right, SEGA has announced a partnership with BBC Earth to create a unique user experience. Yes, the press release actually calls it an “experience,” and quite a number of times at that. The “experience” will be coming to both the USA and Japan in the next couple of years.

“I am very happy that we have been able to join together with BBC Worldwide who possess one of the world’s finest libraries of Natural History footage. I am confident that by fusing this fabulous content with our entertainment know-how, we can deliver a new and thoroughly unique experience of the natural world. Through the universal theme of nature, SEGA will create a new live entertainment experience that will be enjoyed by all nationalities, ages and genders” said Okitane Usui, SEGA Corporation’s COO.

Where exactly can you experience this collaboration? No locations or solid dates have been set yet, but SEGA says they will be announced in the upcoming months. I personally can’t wait, since I love BBC’s Planet Earth series.

Border Break 2.5 coming to Japanese arcades next week

This is Border Break, one of those arcade games I really want to play on a home console but probably will never get a chance to, due to the limited market for a game like this. The game seems to be doing pretty well in Japan and SEGA continues to support it. It even has a big update coming this week.

The game is getting new mechs (Blast Runners as they are called by SEGA) and new maps There is also a new element called Daikouousen. Basically “Big Offensive” and “Defensive Battle”. The players will be split into offensive and defensive teams that will have to either defend or attack the core.

SEGA is also allowing users to edit and customize their emblem in game, which will be placed on their Blast Runner of choice.

Classic SEGA Magazine Corner: SEGA Visions introduces us to Sonic 20 years ago

Oh snap, is this magazine already 20 years old? SEGA Visions magazine was the first official magazine of SEGA of America. It was launched to compete against Nintendo Power. It was actually free for a year if you owned a SEGA console. Not bad, not bad at all.

In this issue we will be looking at SEGA of America talking a bit about their new hero, Sonic the Hedgehog. It’s so odd reading their description of what Sonic is like, since we have known him for 20 years.

The other scans show SEGA’s Game Gear US launch and profiles of people that used to work at SEGA… 20 years ago. Interesting indeed.

Virtua Tennis 4 Move demo hits PSN today

SEGA already released a Virtua Tennis 4 demo right before PSN went down. That demo didn’t have Move support, they promised that in the upcoming months they would release a Move demo for the game. Now its been months, they plan on delivering today.

SEGA has released two demos on PSN and a mini game on Playstation Home. I hope the game sells enough on PS3 to make up for the exclusive content. (including 2 players, 2 mini games being exclusive).

Rise of Nightmares gets first gameplay trailer

This game is probably the first really awesome looking game that is coming out on the Kinect. It is set to release in September of this year.

Parts of the trailer remind me of Hostel, while the other parts have The House of the Dead art style that all us SEGA fans grew up enjoying. This might not get mainstream critics hyped, but us SEGA fans are keeping an eye out on this one.

SEGA teases Sonic 20th Anniversary iphone app

SEGA had an event on the 18th in Japan for Sonic Generations. All the big guys from Sonic Team where there to answer fan questions, the public got to play City Escape level on the PS3 and Green Hill Zone (modern) on the 3DS. Then this little app above was teased.

SEGA is calling the app “Sonic 20th Anniversary” app. Featured in the pictures is ‘Soinic the sketch hog’. The app will give you the latest news on how SEGA is celebrating the blue blur’s 20th anniversary and exclusives like wallpapers.

The app is set to debut on the Japanese Apple Store, for free, on June 23rd. Will we be getting a American app? Who knows.

Holy crap, did they just hack my SEGA Genesis?

Seems that the SEGA being hacked story has made it to the mainstream news. Isn’t that great? It sure is, it would have been better if the mainstream news actually had stock photographs of SEGA past the SEGA Genesis.

Now I know why the Saturn and Dreamcast failed. Damn you mainstream news!

SEGA Pass hack leaves 1.29 million users at risk

If you didn’t know, hackers have hacked SEGA’s SEGA Pass service and obtained passwords of some users. How many users had stolen information? It seems the number that SEGA is throwing around is 1.29 million users. The good part? They only got access to emails, birthdays. No credit card information was obtained.

“We immediately took the appropriate action to protect our consumers’ data and isolate the location of the breach. We have launched an investigation into the extent of the breach of our public systems.”- Yoko Nagasawa

SEGA reassures users that they didn’t store their passwords in plain text files, that they used some sort of encryption. No date on when the SEGA Pass service will be back up.

SEGA going to Gamescom this year

SEGA in the last couple of years has not been shy on skipping Gamescom, a European game convention. This year? It seems like they won’t be skipping, since they were listed with publishers attending the event.

What will they be showing? I hope for the press, since most of the ones going from big sites are probably the same guys that went to E3, that they have a new demo level of Sonic Generations. City Escape, please? How about a new level unveil?
