Conduit 2 Hands on Preview

Note: This preview was actually written after PAX 2010, not the recent Conduit 2 community event. As a result, the build I played would now be considered outdated. The only part of the preview this really effects is my opinion on the  frame rate, but nevertheless keep this mind. I actually have a few articles from PAX that never went up. You’ll be seeing the other article soon.

The original Conduit garnered a lot of press for being the first serious attempt at a Wii first person shooter. At the end of the day, despite all the hype surrounding it, The Conduit garnered only a good review score average. The game was criticized for being a very generic corridor shooter, with not much beyond typical running and gunning. With Conduit 2, High Voltage Software has set its sights on correcting all of the flaws of the original.

More after the break.

SEGA Sequel Saturdays: Craaaaazy Taxi

We’re at episode 3 of SEGA Sequel Saturdays, and for this go-round, I’m taking a look at Crazy Taxi, a series that many SEGA fans (especially those old enough to have been to something called an “arcade,”) have fond memories of. Though the home console ports got old for me after about a weekend, there’s just something about the first entry in this series (I never really got into the other two) that screams “SEGA!” and it’s a series I’d love to see brought back, though only if it really expands upon what the earlier entries offered.

Wavemaster releasing a Sonic 20th Anniversary album?

Sonic’s 20th is gaining momentum! First SEGA teasing about the anniversary game, then prototype photos of Jazwares action figures and now a placeholder site for a music album! Looks like SEGA’s Wavemaster has a Sonic 20th Anniversary album planned as evidenced by this recently revealed teaser page www.wave-master.com/sonic20th. Nothing there just yet, except for the above image. A variety of Sonic soundtracks have released under the Wavemaster label, but this is the first time they have created a franchise spanning album. As Wavemaster albums are often two disc affairs, I have no doubt a 20th Anniversary album will be two discs as well.

I’m hoping the potential album gives equal representation of all the years and covers a variety of games. It would be awesome to hear some rarities, such as demo tracks and unreleased tunes. Remixes of old classics would also be pretty sweet. What would you like to hear in a Sonic 20th soundtrack? Sound off below! Any mention of Bentley Jones will result in severe punishment.

A little PSO2 info to satisfy your hunger

Well, actually. This will probably only make you more hungry for PSO2, but at least it’s some info to think about and discuss.

  • Development of PSO2 has been running alongside PSP2 Infinity, so the game is further along in development than some people likely think.
  • Some kind of announcement may be made around the end of April, during the finals of the Infinity Grand Prix.
  • PSO2 will not be set in either Ragol or Gurhal. Instead, look forward to an even larger setting with numerous planets as indicated by the game’s logo.

SEGA-Sammy Q3: $451 million in net income

SEGA-Sammy has posted a net income of ¥36,821 million (about $451 million), that’s 117.3% increased compared to last year. So what branch of SEGA made the most money? Not a big surprise. Pachinco/Pachislots division ranked in ¥54,666 million(about $670 million) operating income.

Coming in at a hot second was Amusement Machine Sales, which had a operating income of ¥8,458 million (about $103 million). Guess who isn’t losing money and didn’t come dead last? Consumer Business (SEGA you know and love, they make those games you play). They brought in an operating income of ¥2,811 million(about $34 million). Congrats SEGA!

SEGA shows off early AOU 2011 lineup

SEGA has opened up a site portal to tease us on what to expect at AOU 2011. Of course, they won’t reveal their secret titles on their site, you have to be there! What we do know is that this year’s theme is “Real Entertainment.”
As for confirmed titles to be shown:

  • SEGA Card-Gen MLB 2010
  • Network Taisen Quiz Answer x Answer Live!
  • Border Break: Air Burst
  • Shining Force Cross: Raid
  • Hatsune Miku Project Diva Arcade ver. A
  • Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown

Issues? All of these titles are old. I assume all new titles will be revealed at the show. SEGA has debuted games like Project Diva and Block People at AOU so don’t be shocked to get some new games this year.

AOU 2011 will be held on February 18th and 19th. If anything sexy is announced we will have it on this blog, along with exclamation marks.

The last of Famitsu’s character trailers, this one is for Jack and his chainsaw Gator Tooth. For all of you guys that didn’t know, Jack is the lead character for MadWorld, the Wii exclusive title from Platinum Games.

The more I see these characters, the more I want to see online gameplay. No, scratch that, the more I want to play it myself!

SEGA Australia details Yakuza 4 limited editions

SEGA Australia have announced that they will be releasing two limited editions for Yakuza 4, along with the regular edition of the game. The limited editions will be labeled as Kuro Edition (Black Edition) and the Shiro Edition (White Edition).  Kuro Edition comes in black steel book and is packed with four pieces of bonus content to unlock. Same thing for the Shiro Edition, only it comes in white steel book. You can see each edition above.
Pre-order deals are rather sweet:

  • EBGames: Pre-order the Kuro Edition and receive the awesome Ichiban Box (Number 1 Box) with your game. It has a hostess calendar, chopsticks, rice bowl, and all comes packaged in a rice box (see picture below!).
  • JB Hi Fi: Pre-order the Shiro Edition and receive a free copy of Yakuza 3.
  • GAME Stores: Pre-order Yakuza 4 and receive a free Yakuza 4 t-shirt. (see picture below!)

All  versions of the game are now available to pre-order in Australia. The game hits store shelves on March 24th. No limited editions announced for America or Europe. Sucks for us.

SEGA hinting at Sonic’s upcoming game?

SEGA those sneaky bastards. They posted up a ‘Happy Hedgehog’ post for groundhogs day. I read it and it rambled on about stuff about Greeks and hedgehog homes. Boring. Then it said…

“Rumor has it, in fact, that there are two styles of science: compared as either objective or abstract. Find the false line within this paragraph itself, and you may find hidden answers of your own”

A challenge. If you re-read the paragraph, some letters are bolded. If you put them together you get: Berlin. What does this mean? I have no idea, but we will get our SEGA detectives on the case.

    Conduit 3DS Incoming

High Voltage Software confirmed they were doing 3DS work during an interview SEGAbits conducted on behalf of Conduit Portal during PAX. Apparently it’s a Conduit project!

This is what High Voltage chief creative officer Eric Nofsinger had to say to EuroGamer:

“We are very much pulling over this engine and this technology on this new hardware. We’re still early. The resolution is definitely lower, but the screen real estate is smaller so it balances out. We’ve not had a lot of severe optimisation yet, but we’re going to be able to have something very close to this [Conduit 2] on the 3DS probably by GDC. We’ve got environments from this already up and running around. You can shoot, you can select different weapons and you can see enemies. It runs pretty darn well with full 3D and everything. I would guess that SEGA will be interested. I had a nice conversation just yesterday with their head of artist and repertoire. At DICE, the conference in Vegas that’s coming up, we’ll probably have some more chats. We’re very excited about that system and what we’re going to be be able to do on it. The work we’ve done with the Wii, we’re going to have a serious leg up. It’s quite different than developing for the DS and the DSi. Developers like us that have more of a console experience on GameCube and on Wii are going to be able to take advantage of the 3D better and they’re going to be able to do a little bit more with the hardware than people who are coming at it from the straight DS angle and used to doing more 2D, or very limited 3D, kinds of things. There’s nothing like it at all (on 3DS). We can be a shining star on this.”High Voltage’s Eric Nofsinger

It is currently unknown whether this is a port or an all new game. Here’s hoping HVS is able to take the lessons learned from Conduit and it’s upcoming sequel and apply it to this.

Former SEGA Employee Selling Awesome Swag On Ebay

A former SEGA employee is selling a load of awesome things he acquired during the Saturn/Dreamcast era. It’s mostly T-Shirts, but it’s all stuff only a SEGA employee could get, so don’t blow it off! Among things currently on sale is a promotional Jet Grind Radio shirt, a “Bernie’s Rangers” Burning Rangers shirt referring to SEGA of America president Bernie Stolar, and a Rent a Hero shirt with logos for every single piece of SEGA hardware ever made, and a Jet Grind Radio Music Sampler promo disc.

You can check it out here.

Anarchy Reigns – Big Bull Trailer

Yet another Anarchy Reigns/Max Anarchy character trailer, the new online brawling game from Sega and Platinum Games.

This trailer highlights BIG BULL, another character from Platinum’s black and white ultra violent Wii game MadWorld.

    According to Andriasang,
Big Bull, the cyborg; a 31-year-old became a 2.88 meter tall 1.3 ton cyborg four years back. He uses the “Jet Hammer” as his weapon, so named because it usually serves as his jet propulsion system.

    Sounds like fun!

A look at Super Monkey Ball 3DS’s fight mode & new stage

One of the modes in the upcoming Super Monkey Ball 3D (or as we call it 3DS, we are cool like that) is Fight Mode. You start off in a level with other friends, you can pick up bananas, whoever has the most when the time runs out wins. Issue? You can hit each other and steal bananas from opposing players.

Every player has the “Banana Shake”, which shakes bananas from the other player, issue is that you lose some bananas too. During play there will appear a “Golden Barrel” somewhere on the level, the monkey to get the tenth hit will get a super power. If you fall off the playing field, you also lose a ton of bananas and will have to make your way back on. An example shown is you falling on a pirate ship, using the canon to blast yourself back into play.

Reminds me a bit of Power Stone. As for the new stage, it is a ‘spooky’ themed one. Its called “Bananightmare”. You can check that out in the gallery, after the jump. The first four photos are of the new stage.
