My Life with SEGA vs. Aliens vs. Predator

The screaming continues on My Life with SEGA with Aliens vs. Predator for PlayStation 3. For the first time ever, I’m reviewing a current generation title on a non-SEGA console, based on the long-standing franchises from 20th Century Fox.

Both franchises have experienced their fair share of hardships. The Alien series was effectively derailed after the ill-conceived Alien 3 in 1992, while the Predator went dormant after the been-there-done-that reception of 1990’s Predator 2. In spite of this, the comic series published by Dark Horse comics has fairly well received since its conception. It has lived on in comics, novels, films and, of course, video games.

The first game based on the series appeared on Atari’s swan song, the Jaguar, and grew from there. Now, it has found its way to PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, published by our beloved SEGA….

So, how does it stack up now that it has been cast into several bargain bins across the country with little reverence? Let’s find out! Like this video? Subscribe to the SEGAbits YouTube channel!

My Life with SEGA Season 2 kicks off with Alien Trilogy: Revisited

My Life with SEGA: Season 2 opens with a three-part episode detailing the Alien franchise, from Alien Trilogy on SEGA Saturn to Aliens vs. Predator on PS3, even Aliens: Colonial Marines. Ugh! I think I just vomited a little. In my pants.

Anyway, in this week’s episode, I’m revisiting Alien Trilogy. You may be thinking, “Jesus, what more does he have to say about it? Move on already!” Well, I wasn’t entirely happy with that video to begin with, and my feeling’s towards it have changed a bit since….2011? Good lord.

Without further ado, I give you Alien Trilogy: Revisited. Like this video? Subscribe to the SEGAbits YouTube channel!

SEGA drops prices on some Game on Demand titles

Something I always hated about Games on Demand or any other ‘buy full titles digitally’ on consoles is that they always overprice the game in question. Did you know that Vanquish was $40 dollars? Well was, since SEGA just announced a much needed price drop.

Here are the price drops:

  • Vanquish – $39.99/£29.99   $19.99/£14.99
  • Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing –  $29.99 $19.99
  • Virtua Tennis 2009 – $29.99 $19.99
  • Aliens vs. Predator – $29.99 $19.99
Now these titles are ten dollars under the ‘greatest hits’ or ‘platinum hits’ fee they would normally charge for them new. So they aren’t badly priced anymore.

Want to donate to Japan relief and get some cool SEGA swag?

Well, you still can. It looks like SEGA Of America is about done auctioning off their items, having raised thousands of dollars by selling rare merchandise on eBay the past couple of weeks.

Well, they still have a few items up. If you’re into cosplay, two Valkyria Chronicles uniforms are up for grabs, as well as some Aliens Vs. Predator games, a rare Sonic & Tails 1992 SEGA watch, and more.

Get them while you still can, and help out a truly noble cause.

Bayonetta and Aliens vs. Predators finally hitting Games on Demand

SEGA has been hinting at something like this happening for awhile, but now its official, at least on Xbox 360. You can download Aliens vs. Predators on demand right now, but you will have to wait till February 22nd to get Bayonetta.

According to Microsoft’s website, Aliens vs. Predator costs $29.99 and I assume the price will be the same for Bayonetta. AVP weighs in at a 6.12GB.

AvP engine already running on Sony’s NGP

Rebellion Studios has announced that their internal game engine known as Asura works on Sony’s PSP successor, NGP (codename). The technology was used to power the SEGA published Aliens vs. Predator last year.

“The technology, design and art teams have worked incredibly well with Sony’s newest device. We have managed to make our engine fully functional, and looking great on the hardware in double quick time. We’ll be attending DICE and GDC to show what we have created and look for business partners.”– CEO of Rebellion, Jason Kingsley.

The team now has a demonstrable demo running. Rebellion says it’s a “Multiplayer third person shooter”. Of course no one knows yet who the publisher will be or if its Aliens and Predator related. How did they get the engine working so fast? They said that the whole engine is internal, this includes physics and lighting. So porting it was easier than waiting for middleware.

Mike Hayes already expressed that he wanted to do another Aliens vs. Predator on 3DS. Maybe doing a NGP version is the way to go?

Aliens vs Predator coming to PSN?

So i’m flipping through the manual of Vanquish, looking for whatever I can find. I look at the back to see if there is more artwork and see this AvP ad. I didn’t think much at first, then I saw that it was ‘Available To Download On Playstation Network’.

So I went to the Playstation Store and checked, it isn’t on there. I guess it will be on there and they rushed it to printing. So, fair warning, if you want a digital copy of the game, its coming. If you work at making manuals for SEGA, learn release schedules.

Gamefly used sale has cheap SEGA games

If you want some recently released SEGA games and have been waiting. Get them now, for cheap. I ordered from Gamefly and the cases, manuals and disc look flawless.

The rest of the list is here. Happy shopping.

Aliens vs Predator sells over 300,000 in the UK

The success of the new Aliens vs Predator game has no doubt taken everyone, including SEGA, by surprise and recently released figures from January – June 2010 just shows how much of a big impact the title has had for SEGA’s fortune in the United Kingdom. Not only did the title manage to get into a top ten position at eighth, but it even managed to outsell Final Fantasy XIII (Though to be fair to the latter, it was released a month later)

Top 10 selling games in UK (Jan-Jun):
Position / Title / Publisher / Sales
1. Just Dance (Ubisoft) – 940358
2. Red Dead Redemption (Rockstar/Take2) – 819161
3. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (Electronic Arts) – 590580
4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision Blizzard) – 540761
5. Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo) – 499998
6. Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo) – 439920
7. 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa (Electronic Arts) – 396858
8. Aliens vs Predator (SEGA) – 359968
9. Final Fantasy 13 (Square Enix Europe) – 339996
10. FIFA 10 (Electronic Arts) – 318719

It rounds off an excellent achievement for both publisher and developer and no doubt spells good news for Aliens fans eagerly awaiting either a sequel to Aliens vs Predator or the up and coming Aliens: Colonail Marines. It’ll be interesting to see what final sales figures for the title will be, as in console specfic charts for the UK, the title still retains a high title position but no doubt that Aliens vs Predator has been a massive success for SEGA.

AVP console versions no longer supported

It seems for all those people that purched Aliens vs. Predator on consoles and were hoping for a patch to make online better, adding wanted features or new maps are now screwed.Clumsyorchid, community manager for the title, has confirmed that the console patches have be cancelled.

“I’ve just received a mail this AM regarding patches for the console versions of AVP and I regret to inform everyone that these have sadly been scrapped.

I had previously made a claim that these were coming and at the time, this was very much on the table. For the console community, I apologize, as I know there are many features and updates that you’d like to see. I’ll keep fighting internally for this to happen, but until I hear otherwise, there will not be a console patch for either Xbox or PS3.”

Sadly this is not the first time that SEGA have published a game that needed patches and they just stop supporting it. This is an issue SEGA should fix, also release those needed patches faster. Where are the Alpha Protocol patches? At least PC users get future patches, lucky them.

GameStop: $20 off select SEGA titles

GameStop is having a special on select SEGA titles. Not the best SEGA titles, like Bayonetta or SEGA & Sonic All-Stars Racing. But hey, still a deal I guess.

The sale ends on June 10th, so if you want them, make sure you get your ass in there before the 10th.
