Being hardcore SEGA fans, especially during the Dreamcast era, means we played the crap out of Phantasy Star Online. Epic nights spent with our online friends, destroying monsters. Now that Phantasy Star Online 2 has gotten gameplay footage released, it means we can talk about how awesome this game is shaping up.
2001 was a great year for SEGA games, but a bad year for SEGA. While a number of amazing titles released, we played them with the knowledge that the Dreamcast was to be discontinued by March. To create a sad analogy, it was like going to Disneyland knowing you had three months left to live. Jump ahead ten years to 2011. All signs point to a great year for SEGA games AND a great year for SEGA. The comparison between 2001 and 2011 doesn’t end there, as you’ll soon learn in this week’s “Weekly Five”. Just why are we partying like it’s 2001? Read on to find out!
Check it out! At long last the high quality version of the Phantasy Star Online 2 trailer is here for all to see.
There isn’t a lot to do now but sit back and enjoy what many of us have waited a decade for!
The PSO2 footage you will see is still in Pre-Alpha stages, in fact Alpha testing only starts this summer and the game will release either at the end of this year or 2012. Even in these early stages the game looks fantastic to me, I’m itching to play it!
If I could voice one concern it would be that the environment textures are very hit and miss, the floor textures could use bump mapping for anyone playing with a strong gaming PC. It is by no means a deal breaker however, I’ve waited far to long to get my hands on PSO2 and I’m very excited to finally see it in action!
(The video is still processing so it’s not SUPER high quality just yet, we got it up ASAP!)
Alternatively the trailer can be viewed HERE! However I found it loads very slowly.
[Update: It’s over! I’m desperately trying to find a video of the trailer that was shown, but in the meantime you can look at my low quality screenshot!]
Well… it’s not exactly PSO2 just yet. Just a bunch of Japanese people talking and playing PSP2… but this is where the PSO2 footage is supposed to appear. So keep your eyes peeled!
This isn’t the official stream btw, just a fan stream of the official stream. So you don’t gotta worry about limits or moonspeak!
Sony’s big budget story driven game gets love from SEGA’s Masayoshi Yokoyama (Yakuza 4) and Satoshi Sakai (Phantasy Star series), who confess that it is their favorite game released last year. Not only that, Sakai adds that he also enjoyed Call of Duty: Black Ops and Monster Hunter Portable 3rd.
Atsushi Inaba (from Platinum Games) said his favorite game last year was Mario Galaxy 2. I always keep on forgetting that the game came out last year. Just seems like it’s older!
With the release of Phantasy Star Portable 2:Infinity in Japan (today) also comes news of the minimum requirements needed for the Phantasy Star Online 2 Alpha Test.
Some lucky people who get a hold of the initial shipment of PSP2:I will also receive a code inside their game case. Others who subscribe to PSO:BB and PSU in Japan can receive the code though e-mail. These people can register their code right now at http://pso2.jp/alpha.
You will need to register for a SEGA ID then use the code to log in by pressing the alpha test button in blue.
Hit the jump for the all important Minimum Requirements,
So SEGA had their Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity event this weekend, where they said they where going to reveal some Phantasy Star Online 2 news. The news is that alpha testing will start this summer. How do you get in?
You need to get a special code, the code can be obtained in two ways. The first print of Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity will have codes inside, it will have a yellow sticker on the cover stating it has the code. The other way is playing Phantasy Star Universe and Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst (which is still active in Japan), SEGA has not given details on what you will have to do to get them.
So you get the code and you’re in, right? Nope, the code just lets you get into a drawing for the beta. Damn, SEGA are really making it hard. No word on how we in the West will be able to play or if it’s being published here…
SEGA recently announced Phantasy Star Online 2, giving us just a glimpse, at TGS last year. What they did show disappointed some console owners, it was only listed for Windows PC. Now its time for use to tell you why this game needs to be on consoles.
4Gamer talked to Japanese developers, asked them all the following questions:
What game released in 2010 moved you or shocked you the most?
What piece of entertainment (game or non-game) most impressed you in 2010?
Give a message to fans
Two of the producers from SEGA & two people from Platinum Games happen to be on the list of Japanese developers to answer the questions. Hit the jump to find out their responses.
The newest trailer for ‘Phantasy Star Portable 2: Infinity’ the expansion to the original Phantasy Star Portable 2 has got the Phantasy Star fans in a crazed speculation frenzy.
Because not only does it show some of the new characters, races, game play and locations. The end of the trailer shows something far more interesting… Near the end of the trailer you’ll see an old looking spaceship rising from the ground.

Phantasy Star Online 2 is coming, I sometimes have to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming. Does that make me creepy, weird, obsessive? Maybe, but I’ve put more hours into Phantasy Star Online then any other game ever.
This is the exact same trailer that was posted yesterday except in a much higher quality! Now you can drool and show your friends the awesome new PSO2 logo in clarity.
Here is the trailer that we posted about, in its full U Stream quality glory. You can see that it has only been confirmed for Windows PC.
I really do hope we get a console version, for the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. But it being on a PC is good enough for now.
[Update] SEGA pulled it out of our YouTube account. We have moved it else where. If they knock it from this site, we will upload it on our server [/update]
SEGA will be streaming their press conferences via UStream, thus they have a schedule. You know, so you can call in sick at work to watch Nagoshi pimp out some Yakuza games. But that is not all, there are three press conferences that say ‘coming soon’.
One of those ‘coming soon’ confrences lands on September 16th and if you saw that Valkyria Chronicles 3 teaser last time, you will know it said “Not to be open till 9.16”.
My guess is that the three games will be Valkyria Chronicles 3, Red Entertainment’s newest project (Sakura Wars 6?) and Sakai’s PSO 10th anniversary project (PSO2?). Hit the jump for the Ustream schedule.
