Playstation Plus members to get free SEGA Genesis titles

PSN has been lacking a ton of Genesis games that XBLA got. Seems that they will soon be coming out and if you are a Playstation Plus member, you won’t have to pay anything. Below is the release schedule, as you’ll notice, Plus members also get them early.

PlayStation Plus Releases (free)

  • Sonic the Hedgehog – Available March 1 – April 5
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – Available April 5 – May 3
  • Streets of Rage 2 – Available May 3 – May 31
  • Golden Axe 2 – Available May 31 – July 5
  • Comix Zone – Available July 5 – August 2
  • Altered Beast – Available August 2 – August 30

Regular PlayStation Store Release ($4.99 each)

  • Sonic the Hedgehog – March 29
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – April 19
  • Streets of Rage 2 – May 17
  • Golden Axe 2 – June 14
  • Comix Zone – July 19
  • Altered Beast – August 16

The only issue with Playstation Plus is that you don’t own the games, if you stop paying for the service you can’t use the games anymore. That is a negative, but since each game costs less than the monthly subscription (if you buy a year’s worth), it might be worth a look.

Make-A-Wish grants J-Jay’s Sonic the Hedgehog wish

The Make-A-Wish Foundation started with the goal of fulfilling wishes of kids that are in life threatening medical conditions. Here we have J-Jay, a kid from the Netherlands who’s a huge Sonic fan. What did he want? Eat a slice of birthday cake with the blue blur himself.

So the foundation contacted SEGA Benelux office, and got someone from SEGA Europe over to Holland to start planning a boy’s dream party. To read the rest of J-Jays story and view more photographs from the event, click here.

Glad that everything worked out for J-Jay and his family. Looked like an awesome party.

Sonic 20th Anniversary Action Figure Collection Revealed! (drools)

Just when I thought Jazwares has taken all the money they could take from me, they reveal this epic collection! Jazwares is celebrating Sonic’s 20th in style by producing figures that span his 20 year career. These photos found online were snapped at JazWares’ booth at the 2011 UK Toy Fair. One collection revealed is “Sonic Through Time”, which will depict the various designs of Sonic over the years. Photos reveal a 1991 Sonic and a 2008 Sonic, but I’m sure we’ll also see a 1999 and perhaps 2011 model as well. Very cool. After the jump, Eggman takes center stage.

Sega to celebrate 20 years of Sonic and Puyo Pop in 2011!

Ladies and Gentlemen… Na, who am I kidding, Gentlemen and Gentlemen! The time is almost upon us!

In a matter of hours it will be 2011, and with 2011 comes not one anniversary of great importance amongst Sega fans everywhere but two! Yes, both Sonic the Hedgehog and Puyo Pop turn 20 this year! To celebrate, on the stroke of midnight, (Japanese time)  Sega has already began the hype.

Sega have released a press statement suggesting that they have a number of projects lined up for both the Sonic the Hedgehog and Puyo Pop franchises in 2011. They weren’t specific on what these ‘projects’ entail but I suspect they will hold events as well as release celebratory games.

You can visit the Sonic anniversary site HERE.

If the next Sonic game is as good if not better then Sonic Colours and we get another great Puyo Pop game, Yakuza 4 and Yakuza of the End, Valkryia Chronicles 3, Bayonetta 2, Shogun 2, Creative Assembly’s new action game and of course Phantasy Star Online 2… Well shit, 2011 is going to be a sweet year for us Sega fans!

So happy new year from Segabits, have a good one and I’ll see you next year folks! I’m off to get wasted!

Classic SEGA Magazine Corner: EGM May 1991

Continuing an article series started by SEGAbits writer MadeManG74, I present another classic SEGA magazine: Electronic Gaming Monthly Number 22, released May 1991. SEGA and Sonic fans of course recognize May ’91 as the month before Sonic the Hedgehog hit stores. American magazine EGM joined the hype wagon and gave Sonic his own cover and a two page preview spread. Check out the article that was, most likely, the first real preview many had seen of the now classic SEGA series!

5 Times Sonic Totally Beat Mario

There are moments in Sonic and Mario’s histories worthy of debate: Sonic 3 or Super Mario 3? Who had the better first 3D game? Mario Kart Wii or Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing Wii? However, there are also moments when it is so obvious that Sonic won, even the most hardcore Mario fans will have a tough time assembling a counter argument. Let’s take a stroll down memory lane and revisit 5 times Sonic totally beat Mario!

Sonic fan film to get original Sonic voice actor

If you guys didn’t know, there is some fans working on a Sonic the Hedgehog film, Eddie Lebron is already in the finishing stages of the fan movie. Now, if you are asking yourself if the guy in the middle is an older Steve Urkel from Family Matters fame… it is.

Jaleel White white was the first voice actor for Sonic, he voiced him in three cartoons. Seems the fan film has pulled the retired Sonic voice actor back to the hot seat, according to the site they had him record as a older and younger Sonic, they are still going to choose what version to use. The film is set to be 10-15 minutes long, so don’t expect a Lord of the Rings long movie.

10″ Sonic and the Sonic PVC 6-pack!

As 2010 comes to an end, so too does a great year for Sonic toys! This year we saw toymaker Jazwares make a huge step up in quality and number of new figures. Meanwhile, First 4 Figures covered the collectible side of things with an awesome Super Sonic statue and a great collection of PVC figures. Today I thought I’d highlight two recent acquisitions: Jazware’s 10″ Sonic and First 4 Figures PVC 6-pack!

So about that Lego Sonic the Hedgehog…

Flickr user Encaja en Camon has posted up some really neat Lego designs. I have always been a fan of Legos grounding up, but my parents never bought them because they where so expensive, its pretty cool seeing someone pull off some video game artwork with them, mainly Sonic.

He has also uploaded some Duck Hunt, Super Mario Bros and Pac Man stuff. Check out his flickr. Below is the finished Sonic Lego piece.

Video shows how to make Sonic Sackboy

Sackboy was a nickname we used to call this kid in my high school with one testical, seems that the world has changed and given this name to Sony’s new family friendly mascot.

One of the gimmicks of Sackboy is that he can change his appearance, mostly when you pay Sony money for new items. One of the costumes Sackboy has received over the years has  been a Sonic the Hedgehog pack. Now you can make your own Sackboy Sonic doll at home. Follow the video.
