Rumor: Bayonetta 2 canceled before it’s announced

It has been awhile since the guys from Platinum Games have teased Bayonetta 2 and if this rumor is true, they won’t be talking about it ever again. Rumor has it that SEGA has cancelled the upcoming game Bayonetta 2 as part of their aggressive Western restructure strategy.

So why did they cancel it and why do I think the reason is bullshit?

In the SPOnG article they call Bayonetta a commerical failure, but a critical success. So basically it didn’t sell enough to warrant a sequel. I don’t see why SEGA would cancel this game. The engine is made, the first one probably cost the most to make. A sequel would be much lower cost and seeing how the first game did over a million copies, I just don’t see them passing the game up. Which is the opposite of what I have read from SEGA people. If you guys recall Naoya Tsurumi, he considered the game a success. Could it be canceled? Yes. But was it due to poor sales? Unlikely.

Fact: Bayonetta sold more on 2 platforms than Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing did on four platforms. Didn’t SEGA just announce Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed?

When SPOnG asked SEGA about the cancellation of Bayonetta 2, they had no comment. Nothing new here.

    Its a rumor.

    rumors are annoying.

Beside, look at new SEGA All star and lineup,
I dont get the confusion over SEGA West stuff,
they are there & gonna kick ass.

Shenmue HD BABY! is what every1 waitin 4.

Well their goes the first great original SEGA game in years to get canned, no more Bayonetta, which is a real shame as Edge gave it a perfect 10, and they are very strict on game reviews, Bayonetta is only the 11th game to have ever been awarded a perfect 10 by Edge.

I will be very sad if this rumor turns out to be true. I’d rather the news be that Bayonetta wasn’t even being developed than it being canceled mid-development.

I really hope SEGA hasn’t decided they don’t need Bayonetta. It’s one of the best things to come out of post-console manufacturing from SEGA. 🙁

If I were Mr. T, I’d dismiss this rumor as a bunch of jibber-jabber. In fact, even though I’m not Mr. T, I am still dismissing it as jibber-jabber!

Admittedly, calling Bayonetta the best thirdperson brawler of the current generation of consoles is to damn it with faint praise. This, after all, is a genre that peaked in the PS2 and Xbox era. There are almost too many to list: Ninja Gaiden Black, Bujingai: Swordmaster, Genji: Dawn Of The Samurai, Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition and, of course, the peerless and much-missed Clover Studio, with Viewtiful Joe and God Hand. The previous generation of consoles was, in many ways, defined by experiences like these, and in years to come we may well look back on those as the salad days when the Japanese action game was at its peak.

It’s worth stressing that, at this point, nothing has been confirmed: Sega declined to comment, and director Hideki Kamiya told one fan on Twitter to ask the publisher. Producer Atsushi Inaba has hardly helped, tweeting an image showing the protagonist with Robert Burns from Vanquish and a hastily mocked-up Bayonetta 2 logo, and in the absence of any confirmation or denial from Sega, it’s not looking good. If rumours are true, and Sega has indeed cancelled the game before a line of code has been written, it would be a crying shame.
