Valkyria Chronicles 3 is a PSP game [first scans]

It seems that the upcoming Valkyria Chronicles 3 is real and its coming to PSP. The game appears in the latest issue of Famitsu, under the PSP section.

We are unable to get scans of the feature, since NeoGAF forbids scans of actual magazine content (table of contents is OK). We should be learning more about the game come TGS.

First info with thanks to Varion of Neogaf:

  • Set in the same period as Valkyria 1.
  • Key characters are all new.
  • Focuses around a group called the Nameless which are… ergh. Closest English word seems to be a penal battalion, the Japanese definition according to Wikipedia is “Special group in the army composed of deserters and other military offenders. In the broader sense it doesn’t have to be military offenders, and can be composed of general criminals as well. These units are often given dangerous or unpleasant missions such as the burying of corpses or the removal of land mines.”

Great for PSP fans, bummer for me…

Make an awesome engine, shit on it by moving the series to PSP.

Fucking Sega, 1 step forward 2 steps back.

At least the scans and info make it seem like a good setting, but that makes it hurt even more that this is a PSP game.

  3. Autosaver says:

Not, I'm not blaming everything on Sega. First of all, its not Sega's fault that they have to move it to PSP. I think its obvious they aren't happy with the sales of the PS3 version and did not generate enough money. Though, they saw the PSP as being a cheap and affordable place for game development. I bet they were happy with the sales too.

So is this the big "sakura taisen" announcement as well? I like the designs except for the girl's strawberry vanilla hair or w.e.

  5. SOUP says:

The hair probably has something to do with the whole Valkurur thing.

From what I've read so far, looks like it's shaping up to be a pretty solid sequel. I've really been enjoying the second game, and can't wait to get my hands on this one.

LOL, how can SEGA Japan ALWAYS made wrong decisions? Something is wrong there…

  7. Aki-at says:

I'm not sure how people can claim this is the wrong decision, perhaps not one's choice of console, but wrong? The original Valkyria Chronicles is yet to sell over 500,000 units worldwide and the majority of those sales comes from price deals.

Not that I am saying that I'd like it to be on the Playstation 3, but Valkyria Chronicles sold hardly enough to justify another HD console title but still sold enough for the series not to be left to gather dust forever.

Totally agree with you Alì, and Aki waiting for a sequel of the series on the PS3 was rising dramatically among fans and above all they have meditated revenge against SEGA if the game was on PSP.

  9. Aki-at says:

And those fans still are not large enough to support a full release on a HD console. If SEGA make Valkyria Chronicles 3 for both the 360 and the PS3 the game would be a financial failure for them. There is no guess work on that, it's fact. Combined Japan and America sales are 350,000 and almost half of that is from price cut sales.

It's all well and good saying the fans want it, but what people want is not always the right decision, this is closer to the correct decision, unless people missed the memo of how most RPG games happen to be on the DS and PSP now, what makes you think SEGA wont follow suit? Do you know Valkyria Chronicles sold worse than Lost Odyssesy, Eternal Soneta, Star Ocean 4, Blue Dragon etc it hardly sold well enough to warrent a HD sequel. People want it, but sales only justify a continuation of the series, not as a HD series but a Portable series.

    Harsh but true.

    You hit the spot.

Like I said earlier, I know this is awful. But they can't really support a PS3 game. They won't make any(Or little) money.

There is a reason Sega is making Colors on the Wii. Sonic sells better on the Wii and its much easier to make(Less money too)

So, why not do this with VC?
