Publisher SEGA today announced that they have acquired San Francisco based developer Three Rings Design, known by many for developing the recently published MMORPG Spiral Knights for SEGA. Spiral Knights has been met with good reaction form critics and earlier this year SEGA announced the game had over one million accounts by July 6th 2011, three months after launch. Speaking to the press, VP of SEGA Digital Content, Haruki Satomi said;
“We knew from the first time we saw Spiral Knights that the team at Three Rings was not simply talented but truly unique, and the close bond we have formed with them over the past year has only solidified that impression,” said Haruki Satomi from Sega. “We are proud to welcome them as the newest member of the Sega family, and look forward to seeing what great things we can create together over the coming years.”
Whilst co-founder and CEO Daniel James said;
“Today brings to a close a ten year journey as an independent developer, and opens a new chapter for the studio as a part of the SEGA family. As many of you know, SEGA and Three Rings partnered to launch Spiral Knights, building a deep trust and mutual respect over the past year.”
“It will continue to be managed by myself and my colleague Tom Schofield. Our talented crew are excited to be joining SEGA; we all foresee years of great collaborations ahead. Again, no changes to our current development plans have been made, and we of course hope to announce more exciting projects in the future.”
James added that SEGA will now be helping Three Rings Design help to finish work on their Doctor Who game, a project commissioned by the BBC last year.

As a big fan and admirer of 3 rings and the great game they delivered, i am very glad with this news.
Sega made a good choice. As the more updates came out for spiral, each time it became more aparant how much 3 rings knew what they were doing design choice wise.
Hopefully SEGA wont destroy them and make them into a company thats all about business. I see 3 rings as devs that love what they’re doing so I hope they’ll keep the freedom
