NiGHTS into Dreams into Comics – Issue 1

Originally written July, 2009 for The Saturn Junkyard

While the Saturn hit the US in 1995, it wasn’t until late 1997 that I bought a system. A large part of why I held out was money, $399 is a fortune to an 11 year old. Also, I was having way too much fun with my Genesis at the time, a testament to the quality of the 16-bit system. The Genesis had everything I wanted: Sonic the Hedgehog and Disney Interactive games. The Saturn had a Sonic compilation of games I already owned and some goofy jester game. At the time I was oblivious to the fact that NiGHTS was a Sonic Team game (no Wikipedias or SEGAbits back in 1995, kids) and so I went on ignoring one of the greatest games and systems of the mid-90’s.

Yu Suzuki working on a Kinect fighting game

This is an exciting story and something we might see more of at E3; Yu Suzuki is working on a Kinect fighting game. The man that was behind Virtua Fighter! Yu Suzuki has joined Tokyo-based Premium Agency and they both announced their first title, which is Kinect-based. This means that it’s not a SEGA title, sadly.

How much hands on will Yu Suzuki have with the project? Unknown. He is being titled “Executive game producer” by the company, and has been said to be overseeing the project. So probably not too much involvement.

So what does this mean for Yu Suzuki and SEGA? I guess we will find out in the upcoming years.

Playstation Home gets Virtua Tennis 4 promotional mini game

When Home launched everyone thought it was a tad shit, because it was basically that. Now it has tons of spots and stuff to do. Sony has even said they will be streaming their E3 event from Home. Now SEGA is using Home to promote Virtua Tennis 4 with a free Home game.

The mini game they made to promote Virtua Tennis 4 isn’t a tennis game, it’s a galaga shooting game that takes place on a tennis court (with you taking control of the tennis ball machine). The spot and game are 100% free, and also look pretty fun. So log in and enjoy. This is a Europe announcement, so we might have to wait for the US home release.

Sonic Generations on 3DS to have multiplayer?

SEGA of Japan has put up their website for Sonic Generations. They have screenshots of the HD versions of the game, very nice and fancy stuff.

Here is something odd. The HD versions of the game say they are single player titles, but the 3DS lists 1 to 2 players. The 3DS already confirmed it will get an exclusive level, will it also get exclusive multiplayer?

More Sonic Boom Details Arrive. CUPCAKES!

Sega of America has announced details on their latest blog about the Sonic Boom event. The event will include prizes such as T-Shirts and hats. Also, demos of Sonic Generations will be on hand. Folks who want to get in without a ticket will have to wait until others leave in order for a chance to get in. That means those of you without a pass may still have a chance to get in. And the best news of all………..

Samurai Blood Show turns out to be iOS game

Do you like Samurais and Blood? Do you have an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch? You are in luck if you live in Japan. If you remember correctly, we talked about SEGA trademarking “Samurai Blood Show”, this is for western release. So you will probably have to wait later for a world wide release.

Above is a video showing off the game in action. Not too impressive graphically. Looks like they made the game on a smaller budget. Game is launching with three price tiers: Free, Plus (350 Yen) and Complete (1200 Yen).

PSN returns & has SEGA Rally Online Arcade up for purchase

Well, the game is already out for XBLA. What about PSN? Its out now. Like right now. The PSN store just got updated and came back online. Though its being slammed hard by traffic.

The game is $9.99, a bargain for the goodness you will be getting. Also new is the SEGA Genesis Dynamic Theme that is exclusive to PS+ users. Feels good man.

Nintendo Power’s Classic and Modern Cover Variants Hitting Newsstands

While we had previously reported on the screens found within Nintendo Power’s Shinobi and Sonic Generations 3DS reveal issue, we have yet to share the two versions of the cover. Now hitting newsstands are two way past cool covers featuring Classic and Modern Sonic. I’ve been keeping my eye on my local newsstand, making a sad face every time I saw the old Zelda cover of this past month on the rack. But today the awesome Sonic covers hit and I snatched them right up, thus falling into NP’s trap and giving them double the money. Oh well, it’s worth it for Classic Sonic.

Rise of Nightmares box art is awesome

The design reminds me of the Condemned box art, but even better. It has a really dirty and creepy feel to it. I just hope the full retail release lives up to at least the awesomely designed box art.

The game is rumored to allow you to use your whole body to fight off the undead. Talk about burning calories!

Jimquisition discusses Sonic trying too hard to be cool

The new Jimquisition is being posted here because one of the characters he discusses on this video is Sonic. How Sonic’s way of being cool is outdated, thus is lame in new games when he walks around going “Dude, totally awesome Tails!”

In an odd way, I agree with this part. I disagree with what he says after. He suggests that SEGA make Sonic a joke, you know, a character that doesn’t try to take himself seriously. I think this is a mistake. The whole “Dude I’m totally cool” was basically marketing stuff and I think a silent Sonic is the best medicine.

Sonic’s design is timeless. It will always look awesome. His attitude is best left like it was in the classics, a silent picture.

SEGA officially announces London 2012 Olympic game

This is no secret that SEGA was planning a realistic London 2012 Olympic sports game. I mean, they already announced their Mario & Sonic title, it was just a matter of time.

As for this title, it is being developed by SEGA’s new Australia studio which is rightfully named SEGA Studios Australia. Good luck to them and hit the jump to read the press release.

Retro Review: Sonic 3-D Blast (Saturn)

(Re-Edited from Shigs Sonic Stadium Review)

Many of you may only know Sonic 3-D Blast through the Genesis version, which you either played back in the day or on the Mega Collection. If that’s the case, then sadly, you’ve been playing the far inferior version. Yes, the level design is the same, but graphics and sound can make a big difference in your enjoyment of a game. Sonic 3-D Blast was originally intended to be a Genesis only game developed by Traveler’s Tales with some help from Sega of Japan. However, the Saturn was suffering not only in sales, but from a complete lack of any Sonic titles. Sonic Extreme was in development Hell at the time and would not make Christmas release. (Then again, it would not make ANY release, as it was cancelled shortly afterwards). In seven weeks, Sega managed to port the game over to Saturn, polish up the graphics, change the music from Jun Senoue’s tunes to new,  jazzy ones by Richard Jaques, and add what is arguably one of the best bonus stages in Sonic history.  That’s quite a feat for a seven week port!

Captain America gets pre-order bonuses at Gamestop

Captain America: Super Solider is looking like it will be the best SEGA and Marvel tie-in game in recent history. Yes, that is not saying too much. If you pre-order the game via Gamestop (US only as far as I know) you will get the “Ultimates” DLC pack below.

  • Ultimates 1942 Captain America costume
  • The “Ballroom Blitz” Challenge Mode Map
  • Early in-game access to Cap’s “Weaponize” ability

Below are more screens of the DLC stuff in action. You can go here to pre-order or your nearest Gamestop. You know those stores are spawning everywhere.
