SEGA Tunes: Sonic R’s Super Sonic Racing

I’ve been struggling to figure out just what tune to feature this week.  Panzer Dragoon’s Flight seemed so fitting! After all, it was used in the All Stars Racing demo Jason and I got to try out. Unfortunately, Flight had already been featured during Panzer Dragoon month. In the end there could only be one choice, another classic SEGA song from Saturn era.

Ladies and gentleman, Richard Jacques’ Super Sonic Racing! Sonic R is known for its cheesy lyrics and energetic singer, so much so that the PC version actually had an option that allowed players to turn them off. Frankly, I can’t imagine playing Sonic R without this music. It turned what was otherwise a mediocre racer with poor controls into one of the most memorable spin-offs in the mascot’s history. Fans don’t remember this game for the tracks or the characters, they remember it for its over the top soundtrack!

Since then, Super Sonic Racing and Can You Feel the Sunshine have gone on to become classic tracks in Sonic’s music catalog, featured in fan and official remixes alike. It was featured in the original Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing and featured in both original and remixed forms in Sonic Generations! Rest assured, this will not be the last time this tune is featured, as there are other remixes of this game to show off.

Finally, hope you guys enjoyed -nSega-‘s month of Jet Set Radio/Naganuma. Always good to have other writers take over this feature, as they will showcase songs I would never feature myself, especially in regards to stuff like Jet Set Radio. If you didn’t care for it, don’t worry. I’m here now. I’ll play other songs. Songs you will love. As well as horribly cheesy catchy abominations that will haunt your nightmares,  such as the above.
