Jet Set Radio’s Gum joins the roster of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

Via Nintendo Power scans comes confirmation of another SEGA character joining the racer roster in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed: Gum of Jet Set Radio. This latest reveal isn’t as exciting as, say, Vyse or Ryo in the first game. Gum has appeared in a past title in the series, SEGA Superstars Tennis, and her game already has representation by way of Beat. Having said all that, I am personally overjoyed to see Gum added to the game. “What!?” you may say, “Blasphemy! She’s taking a slot from an obscure 16-bit game or some Japanese title that nobody really knows about!”. But hear me out. For starters, the game is severely lacking in female characters, and Gum perfectly fills that role of cool gals from SEGA’s past. Secondly, if Sonic gets seven characters, and NiGHTS gets two, why can’t Jet Set Radio have a second racer? Gum herself is a very unique design, which is something you can’t say about Reala or Shadow when comparing them to other characters represented in their respective IPs. Now, I understand if this riles people up because they will now fear MeeMee of Super Monkey Ball joining the roster. But I say wait it out, we still have more than eleven reveals left. Also, Gum is awesome. Disagree? Sound off in the comments below!

That logic applies to pretty much all the IPs there… Why can’t we have MeeMee, Hibana, Aika, Tyris, etc…?

Also, I’m convinced most of the “eleven” remaining characters will be either third party stuff or returning ones like Billy Hatcher.

At the very least, I hope Jacky and Akira gets in, although I doubt.

I heard that Ryo won’t be in this game.

    • I think the difference is that JSR is notable for a number of reasons: it has two tracks, it has a rerelease coming out in the same quarter, it has excellent characters. MeeMee and Amiga? Boring female versions of the male stars, with very little originality of their own.

NiGHTS, I think, got Reala due to the NiGHTS fans pushing so hard for representation.

The people at Sumo aren’t robots, they’re making these decisions with reasoning behind them. Superstars Tennis had two of every IP due to Tennis being a two player sport. ASRT doesn’t require two from every IP, but its nice to see a few IPs getting more than one character. I doubt Sumo will now double up every IP. Maybe we’ll see a few more multiple characters from one IP? But nothing crazy.

I agree the game is lacking female characters and Gum is understandable since she’s the first home girl to guide you through the streets of Tokyo-to, but are we going to see someone like Ulala. I just hope that Gum is the last character from the same IP. Unless we get Captain Onishima :3

*sobs for Sakura Shinguji even though her series has a cult following throughout the years*

I like it! Sure, it’s always nice to see characters from overlooked franchises show up on the roster, but JSR is definitely a franchise that is worthy of two playable characters in SASRT.

Strawman arguments to justify her inclusion just shows me how much of a bad deal this is, not encouraging signs. Alys, Red Ring Rico, Blaze Fielding, Orta, Honey etc alas, SEGA will never expand on the legacy thanks to their strange and silly belief in focus testing.

9 characters left, if we get everyone back from the previous game that would leave only one character left. Thankfully I doubt they would be that out of touch so expect a few more new faces but not holding my breath.

I don’t mind this as long as her vehicle is unique (and not like Beat’s).

The game is shaping up nicely and people still complain about it?

There’s nothing wrong with the game. The game is awesome after I’ve played it. It’s just some of the choices that Sega & Sumo made that kinda upset the fans.
