Bayonetta 2 would not exist without Nintendo

Much hullabaloo has been made about Bayonetta 2 being a Wii U exclusive. Comments have ranged from fans cheering that the game is getting a sequel months after rumors circulated that the game had been canceled, to disinterest or disappointment from fans who don’t want to buy another platform for just one game they really wanted, to finally and most famously, immature and over the top Twitter rage from fans screaming of betrayal and thievery.

Well as it turns out, Platinum Games did not “betray” anyone, nor did Nintendo steal the game from other platforms. In an interview with video game website Polygon, Platinum Games executive director Atsushi Inaba explained in no uncertain terms how critical Nintendo’s involvement was to Bayonetta 2’s existence.

“Would Bayonetta 2 not exist without Nintendo? The answer is yes.”

In the interview, Inaba goes on to say that the game’s core game play won’t be affected by the move from Xbox 360 and PS3 to Wii U, “We create the basic framework of our games on the PC, so even though the hardware changes it doesn’t influence the creation of our games. We’ve already developed our own engine to work with multiple platforms.” In the interview, Inaba goes on to discuss the Wii U platform and SEGA’s handling of Anarchy Reigns, among other things. Update: Nintendo producers are also involved with Bayonetta 2’s production, as revealed by Hideki Kamiya on Twitter.

    Nintendo does what Segadon’t. Keeping Sega’s IP’s alive.

    Now can we stop screaming about this “injustice” BS? Nintendo brought back a game that was cancelled and is keeping Bayonetta in the spotlight. If this works well, we could see Bayonetta 3 on other consoles.

      Let’s not take it that far ;). Maybe if more gamers bought games like Bayonetta, SEGA wouldn’t have been forced to go through a restructuring process and cancel several games, including, if the rumor is to be believed, this one.

      In the end I think it’s unfair to blame any company. SEGA, Nintendo and Platinum Games are each simply doing what it takes to survive, and thankfully Bayonetta 2 made it out of that alive, albeit as an exclusive.

      Inaba says PG was looking for a partner to make Bayonetta 2. He seems to imply the game didn’t even start production before the deal took place. I really don’t understand how people keep pushing rumours from dubious sources (Spong fucking sucks) into discussions.

    • nuckles87 says:

      Well in my case, it’s because that “dubious source” is my boss over at Sonic Stadium, and I take him seriously. 🙂

    I don’t think the uproar was caused merely just because of the hardware change but just the fact Nintendo has anything to do with it, a Sega game, and reading this article today;

    “Nintendo producers are also involved with Bayonetta 2′s production, as revealed by Hideki Kamiya on Twitter.”

    I take it that may mean more of that classic ‘Nintendo censorship’ that you see in their approach to game making.

    That quote right there is likely a part of what the uproar is about.

    Though I have to say, if Bayonetta didn’t sell ‘well enough’ originally, then I can’t see how just punting the sequel off to Nintendo is going to help it’s chances, unless people really do judge their purchases based on the logo of the company responsible for it on the box.

    Which would possibly reveal the actual truth of it all, that it wasn’t a business move to help raise the franchise’s profile as initially thought, but rather, just keeping it alive at all, even if just for one more sequel, if that.

    Shigs, yeah right… Nintendo doesn’t create new IPs since when? At least SEGA is always creating new games, like the new “Demon Tribe” for example. Nintendo really does indeed, REHASH THE SAME BLOODY CRAP OVER AND OVER AND CALL IT A DAY. And well, you know…. maybe Platinum Games woudn’t even exist if it wasn’t for SEGA…. when they were called Clover Capcom screw them over….. and they also did WAY MUCH BETTER, Okami and Viewtful Joe are totally better than Bayonetta and Vanquish… In my opinion SEGA gave way more chances than Platinum Games deserve, they are overrated and never did again make a game in the same caliber as Okami. Nintendo is now buying other IPs, like Fatal Frame, and what in the world is that much different than what EA is always doing? STFU please…

      You definitely can’t be serious. As much as I love Sega, they definitely haven’t been given chances to a damn thing and the marketing choices prove that. Among those outside of the circle who favors Sega and their games, especially all of those Japanese Arcade Titles that you will NEVER see. (Border Break, Shining Force Cross Raid, etc.) Platinum Games have been the main force keeping Sega relevant. Max Anarchy is gold and Sega won’t even take the time to invest in marketing it to the West, while they constantly push back the due date despite the game’s completion and release in Japan. I give Sega props for recovering unlike publishers like Capcom which choose to shovel out their IPs to mediocre studios (DMC, Lost Planet). But to say that they gave Platinum more chances than they deserve is plain ludicrous. Sega should be hoping that they can hold onto a studio that can produce such quality.

    Despite the concern over Nintendo censorship, it’s not as bad as the hayday of Mortak Kombat.

    I can see SEGA as an advisor to tell Nintendo to “keep it the way it is”. No way in hell would SEGA let Bayonetta change the way it’s created… just like when Nintendo told SEGA not to change F-Zero as a franchise.

    This mutual respect will pay off if Nintendo pays the same respects as SEGA did to Nintendo.

    I’m not sure how people can complain about “nintendo censorship” when, as publishers of the Wii U version of Ninja Gaiden 3, the game has seen an increase in blood and gore and a vastly upped difficulty in the Wii U version.

    Nintendo snagged Bayonetta 2 to interest hardcore gamers and entice them into buying a Wii U. They have nothing to gain by dumbing down the game or censoring it.

    People shouldn’t freak out about Nintendo staff being “involved.” Nintendo staff are always “involved” in the games they publish, it doesn’t mean they are dictating the way the game has to be. Comments from Mistwalker on The Last Story have indicated that they provided “advice” that they felt was great advice.

    All I’m going to say is that Sega dropped the ball big time. Bayonetta was one of my favourite games of this entire generation, it was my girlfriends favourite game of this generation.

    It’s arguably the best action game ever made and it has a meta score to back that up. While it could have sold a lot more it broke a million in sales. Sega should have been behind Bayonetta 2.

    The fact of the matter is that I’m simply not interested in the Wii-U… In the next generation I’ll probably only buy one new console and it’s very unlikely to be the Wii-U. It’s a huge shame that the sequel to one of my favourite games is going to be exclusive to a console I don’t want.

    Sega I’m disappointed.

    It’s pretty obvious that Sega’s sticking to their “big 5” franchises with regard to future retail releases…unfortunately.

  8. STORM! says:

    This is pure BS! Would Bayonetta 2 exist without Nintendo? OF COURSE IT WOULD! It’s 100% clear that the wrong and bad one here is Sega.

    Canceled or not, they wanted to make a sequel, but Sega never announced it. At least, not now, since they are having poor sales every year.

    And more, looks like Sega is not coming to publish or make new games for consolesl; they are all shit Smartphone and social games now.

    Thanks Sega! And R.I.P.! I can’t see nothing good coming soon after Ryu Ga Gotoku 5.

    Oh, yeah, accord to Shining series producer, they are working on a new project. I bet it is “Shining something Social Card Game Online”… -_-;
