Aliens: Colonial Marines still doing great in UK this week, drops to #5 spot

Aliens-Colonial-Marines-UK-39-s-best-selling-game-1095909
Even with big budget new titles like Crysis 3 and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Aliens: Colonial Marines still takes up a spot on the UK charts coming in #5. Frankly, the game doesn’t deserve to chart at all, but I guess in a perfect world most of these titles wouldn’t chart.

Last week Aliens: Colonial Marines took the #1 spot, beating out Dead Space 3 which took #2. This week it beats that game at the same pace, since Dead Space 3 is #6 on the charts this week. So, at least in the UK, Aliens: Colonial Marines is more successful than the higher rated Dead Space 3. So, in the end, do reviews matter?

Review: Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed (3DS)

sonic__all_stars_racing_transformed_3ds_box_art

Released to home consoles in November of last year, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed ended up being one of the best games SEGA released in 2012. Marketing for the game was dead-on in proclaiming “It’s Not Just Racing. It’s Racing Transformed!”, as the game was both a huge step up from the previous game and a contender for the best character kart racer around. As the months went on, other versions of the game released with a Vita version in December and a PC version released just last month. The latest, and possibly final version of the game to be released, is for the 3DS. Despite being the most underpowered of the platforms, I was anxious to see how SEGA and Sumo were able to translate the console title to Nintendo’s handheld.

Hell Yeah! developer shuts down their studio

next6

Arkedo studio, the French team behind Hell Yeah! are now out of business according to their blog. They basically stated they won’t be developing anymore games due to the fact that they don’t have anymore employees due to not having enough money. Seems that Hell Yeah! cost the developers too much to make. They also stated that they have two little games completed and might release them later on.

The founders said they are moving on, one of them wants to enter publishing while the other wants to start a new mini-studio. It really sucks when developers go out of business, hopefully SEGA will take some of the employees and start a small digital studio. I mean, why not? I’m sure SEGA liked working together, no? Your thoughts?

Screen Shot 2013-02-22 at 12.01.47 PM

Okay, aside from a number of SEGA character cameos in the movie itself, and Sonic, Eggman and Neff appearing on the cover, Wreck-It Ralph news is not entirely SEGA related. But we figured a number of SEGA fans who enjoyed the movie might be picking it up on blu-ray when it releases in two weeks in the US. Courtesy of the folks at Scott (the tissue and toilet paper people) comes a $7 coupon for use with either the blu-ray + DVD combo pack or the blu-ray + blu-ray 3D + DVD + digital. To get the coupon, you’ll need to do the following:

Head on over to Scott Shared Values and sign in or register for an account. Then answer one question and you will get a code for a $7 off Disney’s Wreck It Ralph Blu-ray Combo Pack coupon! To redeem the codefollow the link and log into your Disney Movie Rewards Account (or create an account). There, you can enter the code and you will be able to print. Keep in mind that this movie isn’t released until 3/5, but you may want to print this coupon now as I’m not sure how long it will be available. Also note that this coupon is only valid through Friday, 3/8, so you will only have a few days to use it once the movie is released. And, be sure to let us know if you score a great deal!

Considering early ads have leaked for stores, including Target, one could get the blu-ray + DVD combo pack for a mere  $12.99 or the blu-ray + blu-ray 3D + DVD + digital combo pack for a cool $20.99.

Hey, you got $5 bucks and a capable PC? Well, why not pick up Binary Domain? We here at SEGAbits loved the game, check out our review. It even redeems on Steam, so no worries there. What else is on sale for SEGA? Let’s have a look.

Not as much as I would have liked. But it is still quite a nice selection. Though having a nice sell on SEGA & Sonic All-Stars Transformed would have been really awesome. You can check out over 800 games being discount over at Amazon now. Have fun!

SEGA Saturn game designer Kenji Eno died yesterday

800px-KenjiEnoJI2
Kenji Eno was always very anti-Sony and pro-SEGA back in the day. So much so that his franchises turned out to be exclusive and the man would go on a media rampage to put down Sony when he could. He is known for his horror SEGA Saturn titles like Enemy Zero and D (which later got a sequel on Dreamcast).

“I felt betrayed when Sony was treating me like that, so when I heard that the Sega vice president was a very interesting guy, he and I met and created this whole plot. My original conditions to make the game exclusive for Saturn involved my earlier story about supplying 1,000 Saturns for the blind people, and also to have Sega’s president appear onstage, personally, for the event. That was the original plot, and that was what was going to happen until the last minute, but he had a board meeting at Sega, and they were like, “OK, you’re actually appearing?” Like, Sega is a big, successful company, and a high-up management-level guy in that kind of company appearing in a situation like that isn’t good, so everybody stopped him. So he appeared in a video rather than in person.” – Kenji Eno tells 1up in a exclusive interview back in 2008.

Cause of death is said to be heart failure brought on by hypertension. Its funny how ahead of his time he was, one of his conditions to make his games exclusive to Saturn was for SEGA to give a 1,000 Saturn’s to blind people. He even created a game for them called ‘Real Sounds: Kaze No Regret‘ for the Saturn that was later re-released on Dreamcast.

Binary Domain on steam gets update with support for Big Picture Mode and more

tumblr_m7sjz5uqvh1qmzsn0o1_1280
SEGA’s port for Binary Domain isn’t exactly good, so I was thrilled to find out that there was a small 5.5mb update. Sadly I knew it couldn’t fix all port’s problem and I was right.

Fixes: Updated launcher featuring gamepad navigation in Steam Big Picture mode.Fixed issues launching the game on Optimus graphics cards.

Seems there will be another update soon, because…

Known issues: Custom configurations for some DirectInput pads may not save correctly. This will be fixed in an update soon.

Come on SEGA, release worthy updates to your PC stuff and more people will trust your ports!

SEGA among 3rd party publishers to support Playstation 4

ps43rdpartydevelopers-555x308

Even though SEGA wasn’t at the event with a game to show off, it is confirmed that they are working on Playstation 4 content. Whatever those games are, I’m excited. Then again it’s to be expected, SEGA supports all major consoles.

But want to see something not expected? How about Kazuma Kiryu at Sony’s press conference  He was there for a brief moment, hit the jump to see the screenshot.

Up from the depths, My Life with SEGA tackles Godzilla Generations

What’s this? My second review of a Dreamcast title? Don’t get your hopes up. It’s not Shenmue. Believe me, I wish it was. Instead, I’m reviewing Godzilla Generations. A Japanese launch title, which just so happens to be a Dreamcast exclusive….

Good. That means it can’t spread. Yeah, I know. “What are you talking about? Godzilla’s awesome!” Oh, Godzilla’s all well and fine, but this game? Just watch it and count yourself among the lucky ones.

Rumor: Anonymous Gearbox developer claims Gearbox lied to SEGA, SEGA temporarily canceled the project

245118-aaheader

Destructoid has done a pretty awesome job covering the clusterfuck that is Aliens: Colonial Marines. Now they have learned, courtesy of a former Gearbox developer that spoke to them only under the condition of anonymity, that Gearbox not only lied to SEGA but that this lie lead to the project temporarily being canceled.

“Gearbox was taking people off the project to put them on Borderlands 1. This was before the big art style change happened on Borderlands. Our team was getting smaller by the month, making it very difficult to get the game made. Ironically several of the team members were ex-3D Realms people who were saying [paraphrasing] ‘Finally, we’re going to Gearbox to make Aliens, and we’re going to ship a fucking game!’ Hah.

At some point in 2008, SEGA temporarily pulled the plug on the game. They caught wind of Gearbox shifting resources (despite still collecting milestone checks as if the team were full size) and lying to SEGA AND 2K about the number of people working on each project. This led to the round of layoffs at Gearbox in late 2008.” -Anonymous former Gearbox developer

It should be noted that due to the developer’s anonymity, this should be regarded as a rumor. Though if this is to be believed, the next question one has to ask is…why did SEGA pick the project back up? While this is pure conjecture on my part, I would surmise that the resurrection of this project had everything to do with the financial success SEGA saw with Aliens vs. Predator, released in 2010. The following year, Aliens: Colonial Marines made its debut at E3 and…well, we know the rest, don’t we?

I would suggest reading the entire article over at Destructoid.

New Sonic toys revealed at New York Toy Fair 2013

jazwarestoys2013

The super Sonic fans over at The Sonic Stadium have come across a bevy of photos from the Jazwares booth at the 2013 New York Toy Fair. Jazwares, who has the license for Sonic toys, has a few new items planned for release this year. While nowhere near as big as the 20th anniversary line of toys, some of the new toys are pretty cool. Spotted in the photos are Sonic branded disc shooters, Sonic and Shadow masks, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed figures of Shadow and Sonic with their vehicles in jet form, mini-figures of various All-Stars Racing Transformed vehicles, a life-size ring that lights up when held, and plushes of Metal Sonic, Silver and Super Sonic. To see more images, check out the article over at The Sonic Stadium!

Phantasy Star Online 2 for Vita gets Japanese release date

segabits pso2 vita

Still no word on if this will be heading to the West, but SEGA will officially be releasing the PS Vita version of the popular Phantasy Star Online 2 in Japan on February 28th. Like the PC version, it will be a free to play download title, though a retail edition will also be available. Those opting to buy the physical copy will be awarded with additional items and costumes.

Phantasy Star Online 2 will also come bundled with a new Ice Silver PS Vita, which will see a Japanese release on the 28th of February as well.

A Western release of the PC version, meanwhile, is still vaguely scheduled for “early 2013” with no word on plans for a Western Vita release.

We’ll keep you posted.
