Swingin’ Report Show #83: Monster Boy And The Cursed Kingdom Developer Interview

Refresh your podcast playlists, because the SEGAbits Swingin’ Report Show podcast is BACK! On this episode George and Barry are joined by Fabien Demeulenaere, Director of Game Atelier, the French game studio working on the upcoming Monster Boy And The Cursed Kingdom. If that title sounds familiar, it is because Monster Boy is both a revival and sequel in the Wonder Boy/Monster World franchise, due out later this year to Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC platforms.

In this exclusive first podcast interview for Fabien, he walks us though how the game transformed from a fan project to an official title in the franchise and talks about how the game both celebrates the franchise’s past and moves it into modern gaming. If you ever played a Wonder Boy or Monster World game on the Master System, Genesis, Mega Drive – or any other platform for that matter – this interview is a must listen.

Why not create a collection so we as gamers can have on all systems like they did with segas collection?

    • You misunderstand. Game Atelier and their publisher have the rights to make new games utilizing everything but the titles, which SEGA owns. They do not have the rights to release compilations, and their aim here is to make a new game. Collections of old titles has nothing to do with this.

    • Miguel says:

I see, thanks for the update

  2. Looking forward to listening to it. Thumbs up!

  3. matty says:

Good show, chaps! I remember Flying Hamster was the first game I had on my 3GS.
It sounds like George got a new mic. That’s cool.

    • Thanks!

George and I are both now using Blue Yeti mics, so expect an uptick in audio quality from us. For some News Bits, he wasn’t recording from home so that explains the change in audio on his end.

  4. rez says:

I hope for Ps Vita version!!!

  5. Twent says:

So how Sega will this project be?

Will it be like Bayonetta 2 again?

    • Bayonetta 2 is not a good comparison. In that case, SEGA owned every aspect of the IP and it was licensed out to Nintendo (Nintendo paid a fee, or SEGA took a cut of the game’s sales).

With Wonder Boy/Monster World, series creator Ryuichi Nishizawa owns every element of the IP except for the names “Wonder Boy” and “Monster World”. So in this case, FDG Entertainment worked with Nishizawa for the rights to use the characters, locations, gameplay, etc. Basically everything but the game titles, which is why they are going with “Monster Boy”, a mix of both series titles. FDG could still have SEGA involved, and as discussed in the podcast once they have the game in a more completed state they plan to show SEGA what they have. Either way, it’ll be a Wonder Boy/Monster World game.
