SEGA announces A Certain Magical Index / Virtual-On crossover game

SEGA has announced A Certain Magical Index / Virtual-On crossover game, which is coming in 2018 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. The game is being based on the 2016 light novel ‘Toaru Majutsu no Virtual-On’  which was a novel having both franchises crossing over and was created to celebrate Virtual-On‘s 20th Anniversary.  It seems that SEGA loved the idea so much, that they needed to create a full blown game based on the light novel. We don’t know if the actual game will use the light novel’s story, which seems to be highly possible.

Here is the summary for the ‘Toaru Majutsu no Virtual-On, which seems to be pretty basic in terms of story.  As for what the game will be and how it will play, SEGA has been conservative on those details. If this is just a Virtual-On game with A Certain Magical Index characters playing as the Virtuaroids, I’ll be OK with that. The last Virtual-On game released was ‘Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Force‘ back in 2010 on Xbox 360. You can watch the A Certain Magical Index / Virtual-On crossover game trailer above.

What are your thoughts on A Certain Magical Index / Virtual-On crossover game? Do you like the idea of SEGA using in-house properties to relaunch franchises?

Juro Watari (creator of Virtual On) is currently in the same division (CS3) that handled Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax so this makes sense to me. I was wondering why he isn’t in the arcade division.

This the fourth collab beteeen Dengeki Bunko and Sega. There was Fighting Climax, the artist for Project 575 and Sega Hard Girls.

It’s a neat idea even if the game’s probably got zero chance of being localized (although…we got Dengeki Bunko so that’s anyone’s guess).

Still want VOOT on Steam though, Sega…

According to the video, the guy says the characters names and then says “They will ride the Virtuaroids and engage in high-speed battle action!”, so I guess it’s safe to say that the game will be about that, as George was hoping. I hope it gets a localization in the future. I wouldn’t be very optimistic about that some time ago, but Atlus USA is pretty much localizing (almost) everything lately, so there’s hope.

I gotta admit, hearing something about Virtual-On that isn’t another re-release sounds a bit exciting. But ver 55.55?! They do realize how high they’re raising the bar with the expectations on that. Or maybe I’m overthinking things.
