Update: Sonic social media and PR man Aaron Webber said the following on Twitter: “Hi guys – saw rumors floating today about another SART game. Just wanted to confirm it’s not a thing!”

Developer Sumo Digital held a year end presentation and it appears there was a bit of a leak, as the presentation slides made their way online. The presentation details Sumo’s past, present and near future, and on the slide detailing current projects there is something that may be of interest to SEGA fans. Listed as being “in development” is an “unannounced karting game” which will feature “established global IP” and “original development”.

SEGA fans will of course know Sumo Digital from their long history with SEGA, working on franchises like OutRun, Superstars Tennis and All-Stars Racing. Released in 2010, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing was met with tons of praise from fans of SEGA and kart racers. In 2012 Sumo Digital released Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, a sequel which refined the experience and added a new transformation aspect. Since then, the sequel has been ported to nearly every platform with the last version being for smart devices in 2014.

At the time, SEGA’s plan was to have the main 3D Sonic games, the Sonic 4 games and the All-Stars Racing games. But after the failure of Sonic 4 Episode II and then the failure of Sonic Boom as its own spin-off franchise, SEGA has moved on to Sonic Mania and the usual main series 3D games. Oddly absent throughout all this was the successful All-Stars Racing games, which led fans to speculate if SEGA has a third game in the works or if they’ve moved on. Of course, the slide above could end up not being a SEGA kart racer, but given 2018’s Sonic drought and the love fans have for the franchise, a third title is possible.

In the meantime, consider a third All-Stars Racing title to be possible but not at all confirmed.

    Would it be good?

  2. Hitrax says:

The first two in the series have been good so far.

I…don’t believe Aaron. I think he’s just bluffing so it will still feel surprising.

Or Sumo is working on a Crash Team Racing game. Either is fine but I’d rather have a new Sonic Sega All Stars Racing.
