Some of you may recall Hunter Girls, a new Genesis/Mega-Drive game being developed by PCSD Games, which launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the game’s development. On July 30th, 2023, their Kickstarter campaign was launched and then was successfully funded on August 29th. Despite the fact that the game has completed development and cartridges have been manufactured, PCSD Games has been forced to cancel shipment of all Kickstarter rewards due to an unanticipated issue with the firm that managed their Kickstarter campaign, Meridian 4. Fortunately, PSCD Games is currently assisting fans in obtaining refunds from Meridian 4 and will instead sell the game cartridges through their own website.
Check in after the break for extra info on this kerfuffle.
The above info was communicated in more detail from PSCD’s perspective in a thread made on their twitter, which you can read here. Meridian 4’s leader, Jeff Giasson, also posted the following message in an update on the Kickstarter page yesterday on November 6th.
“Hello,
We Regret to inform you that, due to unforeseen circumstances, we are unable to fulfill the Hunter Girls Campaign as initially planned. Your support means the world to us, and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience. Your full refund is in progress. We appreciate your understanding and patience.
Thanks for your support.
Sincerely,
Jeff Giasson”
Essentially, PSCD Games claims that Meridian 4 has withheld payment owed to them, which PSCD needed in order to ship Kickstarter backers’ gifts, including the actual game cartridges. Because the two parties cut ties, and Meridian 4 was responsible for the actual Kickstarter campaign, PSCD Games is urging fans to contact Meridian 4 for refunds on their Kickstarter pledges, and to notify PSCD Games if they have not yet been reimbursed. PSCD Games will instead be selling Hunter Girls cartridges on its website, even to those who did not back the Kickstarter campaign. Backers are urged not to order cartridges from them if their Kickstarter pledges have not been returned.
PSCD Games has also stressed in a response on their above thread that this will not affect development of the other games they are currently working on, including other Genesis games like Black Jewel Reborn, upcoming Genesis ports of Pelusa Saga – Kajis Trials and Yeah Yeah Beebiss II, or the Super Nintendo Hunter Girls port Super Hunter Girls.
So there you have it. Although Hunter Girls had completed development without issue, it seems backers still have to contend with a few headaches before they can get their hands on this hotly anticipated game. We at Segabits, of course, wish all backers luck in receiving their refunds. If that includes you, please let us know in the comments below how it goes. We’ll update you here if anything else related to this issue comes up.
(Update: While writing this article, PSCD Games’s Twitter account had gotten restricted before I could finish adding links to all the tweets that give the info I was writing about. I will update the article when their twitter gets restored. I apologize for the inconvenience and promise that all reported info is accurate to the best of my knowledge.)
