Sad news, Tovarisch. Retro Sumus, the talented Spanish developer of Xenocider and the unreleased Genesis/Mega-Drive title Sovietborgs has now disbanded.
They have revealed this news on February 24th, 2025 with the above social media post on Bluesky and on Twitter and Facebook. Their website is now only made up of the same farewell message. This comes following their unsuccessful Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign in August 2025 to fund the completion of Sovietborgs, their latest game which was planned for Genesis, Neo-Geo, MS-DOS, and Dreamcast. While the team was still committed to finishing the game anyway and finding a publisher, it seems now their optimism was misplaced.
Join me after the break to get in on saying farewell right back to them.

It’s sad to see such a talented and ambitious indie game studio hit a wall like this. I was fortunate enough to interview Retro Sumus after trying Sovietborgs myself, and I recommend reading it for some insight into what they tried to accomplish with Sovietborgs. It’s anyone’s guess if Sovietborgs had the potential to be a good game, but I think it had a fair shot at it based on my experience with the demo and speaking with Retro Sumus. (Yuzo Koshiro himself was apparently impressed too, for what that’s worth.) You know what they say though: when a door closes, another one opens. We can only hope that all of the talent at Retro Sumus move on to better things and we wish them all the best of luck with future endeavors.

Fortunately, you’re still able to purchase digital copies of their Dreamcast title Xenocider directly from them. You’ll just have to shoot them an email to inquire about that. Physical copies of Xenocider for Dreamcast are currently still available from VGNYSoft, Castlemania Games, Rondo Products, Video Games New York, PlayAsia, and, surprisingly, Best Buy. European customers can get it from Pixelheart Games. The demo of Sovietborgs is also still available to play or download from their website, but it seems the game may never get any more complete than that.
Are you sad to see Retro Sumus bite the dust? Did you try out the Sovietborgs demo or Xenocider or pledge any money to the Sovietborgs Indiegogo? Lets hear all about it in the comments below.

I believe we will still see the completion of this game for Mega Drive.
As passionate as the kind of companies and teams are, I’m always a bit wary of their ability to stick together, there is always more risk that could lead to them disbanding than a mainstay major company, it seems this is the price of their passion beyond just beyond the corporate level.
This is truly sad 😔 Hopefully someday someone else could finish what the developers started. To the developers at retro sumus: I wish you guys nothing but the very best moving forward. Good luck and Godspeed.
This sucks! Good luck to all. They’re talented, so I have no doubt if they choose to stay in game development, they’ll find something.
