IDW announces Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary Celebration: The Deluxe Edition

You hungry for some Sonic news? IDW has announced Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary Celebration: The Deluxe Edition, an anniversary collection featuring classic Sonic and friends in a new story from Ian Flynn as well as additional stories from “some of Sonic’s biggest fans” and bonus content. Who are these “biggest fans”? My hope are guest artists and writers from other IDW projects, but we’ll see!

The hardcover 96 page book is due to release October 5, 2021, and will be priced at $19.99. You can find pre-order links at Penguin Random House’s website.

Sonic The Hedgehog: The IDW Collection, Volume 1 Hardcover Announced – Collects the First 12 Issues

IDW has announced “Sonic The Hedgehog: The IDW Collection, Volume 1”, the first in a series of hardcover oversized books spanning the IDW Sonic series in recommended reading order. This means that the ongoing series, annuals, and mini-series will all see release under this format as future volumes release. Meanwhile, IDW will also be releasing the trade paperback editions which are priced at $15.99 each and usually collects 4 issues at a time.

Now, this is all speculation in my part, but the naming convention here opens them up to a possible “The Archie Comics Collection” in the future, which I would love to see, but am not holding my breath for. Still, stranger things have happened. After the break, check out some additional information on this upcoming series.

Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary Logo Revealed – New Merchandise Announced

SEGA has just revealed the new 30th Anniversary logo for Sonic the Hedgehog, as well as their merchandising plans for the blue blur who will turn 30 next year. The logo, playing off Sonic’s spinning feet, is very cute. As for merchandise, expect the previously revealed Sonic Encyclo-Speed-ia book from Dark Horse, as well as more creepy Pop! Vinyl figures, Jakks Pacific toys, jewelry, apparel, enamel pins, energy drinks and new Classic Sonic comic books from IDW. The IDW series will consist of a special issue and an accompanying mini series. Read the full press release after the break!

IDW to give Sonic the Hedgehog comic characters Tangle and Whisper their own mini-series

We’re a dozen issues and one video game adaptation special into IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog comic series, and now we know what the first mini-series will entail! Via IDW’s April solicitations came the reveal of an issue #0 of “Sonic the Hedgehog: Tangle & Whisper”. The preview issue is said to give a sneak peek at their upcoming mini-series adventure and includes a recap of “season 1” of the main Sonic the Hedgehog comic (since when are comic books seasons?).

This news is notable as it shows IDW is ready to branch out with the Sonic series with mini-series (something IDW is well known for) and that they are willing to give original characters the spotlight. By comparison, it took Archie two years into their Sonic run before they gave Princess Sally Acorn her own mini-series, and that was the first and last time Archie gave a character not derived from the games their own comic book.

After the break you can read the description of the mini-series preview comic. The mini-series is due out this summer.

While IDW Sonic the Hedgehog #3 hits shops today, the preview for IDW Sonic the Hedgehog #7 has just landed! While IDW does a decent job avoiding any spoilers in the description, if you’ve been reading the series you might want to avoid the latest preview.
