Nicalis, Inc. announced on Twitter today that they will be working with DotEmu and Lizardcube to publish Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap at retail for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. For those who have been following the game, Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is a remake of the classic SEGA Master System game and it released digitally in April, 2017. The game was then given a PlayStation 4 physical release by Limited Run Games in standard and special edition versions.

Now, fans will have another chance at a PS4 physical release and add a Nintendo Switch physical release to their collection. We’ll share more details as we hear them!

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap sells more on Nintendo Switch than the other three platforms combined

The good people over at Gamasutra ran an article covering the ‘rise of the Nindies’, talking to developers that have been porting indie developed games to NIntendo’s Switch platform. One of the developers featured in the article is LizardCube, the developer of Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap, which released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and of course Nintendo Switch earlier this year. While the article talks about more than sales, the interesting bit was that Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap has sold more on the Nintendo Switch than PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC combined!

“more copies of Wonder Boy on the Switch than the three other platforms we released on combined.” – Omar Cornut from Lizardcube

While they didn’t get into specifics on how much Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap has sold on console platforms, according to Steamspy the game has only 8,141 owners which isn’t great at all. I really do think that the game deserves way more sales than that. As for ‘The Rise of Nindies‘ on the Nintendo Switch platform, I feel that a lot of these sales could be attributed to the fact that the Nintendo Switch platform is new at the moment, the real test in sales will come after the platform gets more Nintendo related titles. I surely hope that the momentum keeps it, I feel that the Nintendo Switch is the best platform to play these great indie games! What are your thoughts on this news?

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap Remake Now Available for PC

LaunchCover-PC

The remake of the SEGA Master System classic, Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap has finally arrived on PC. The remake has already landed on consoles back in April and is now appearing on two PC digital download services; Steam and GOG.

For a refresher, the remake is handled by two French developers DotEmu and Lizardcube. Featuring a more involved remake compared to Wonder Boy Returns, features include an additional playable girl, remastered art, sound and music and the ability to switch between the remake and the original game at any time.

Wonder Boy III became a turning point for the series as it broke away from it’s arcade roots. By expanding on the idea of exploration, the player makes use of different animal forms with unique abilities to help reach new areas and uncover gear unique to each form. The series is also known for confusing players thanks to the original developer bringing the game to non-SEGA platforms, such as this game also appearing as Dragon’s Curse on the TurboGrafx-16 without the Wonder Boy license which is owned by SEGA. With permission from SEGA, this remake helps fuel the brand’s return in the midst of the platformer genre making a big comeback.

Make no mistake though, unlike the Surge-fueled 90’s mascot platformers with attitude you’re getting a fun yet challenging experience brought back by a lovingly-crafted remake that’s worth it for those who have played the game before or those who have never experienced it. Again the game can be found for the first time on PC through either Steam or without DRM through GOG.com.

WonderBoyLimitedRunGamesWonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap, the remake to the 1989 SEGA Master System cult classic will be getting a physical release this summer by Limited Run Games. This physical version of Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap will be exclusive to the PlayStation 4, will come in a standard and regular editions. I mean, look at a list of games they have published that are no longer available.  I’m glad that Dot Emu and LizardCube listened to fans who wanted a physical release and made it happen. For those who asked for a physical release, I hope you guys pick up a copy of Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap this summer. But I have a feeling this is going to sell out rather quickly. What are your thoughts on Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap getting a physical release on the PlayStation 4? Are you picking up a copy?

We will keep you updated on this and Night Trap’s Limited Run Games releases.

First Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap developer diary released

DotEmu has released the Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap developer diary video. This one features Development Lead Omar Cornut and Art Director Ben Fiquet meeting with Ryuichi Nishizawa, creator of the Wonder Boy series. This video was shot around the BitSummit 4th convention in Kyoto, Japan in early July 2016.

Inside the video, we see the developers from Lizardcube showing Nishizawa the then-current build of the remake of his game for the first time. The trio discuss how the project began, the allure of secret doors, the appeal of the smoking pig, and more. Nishizawa does touch on some history from designing the original game as well.

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is a remake of the Sega Master System classic Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap, my favorite game on the platform. It is in development for consoles and PC with no specific target release date announced yet.

Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap remake revealed

2016 continues to be the year of retro revivals, as a remake of the SEGA Master System classic Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap has just been announced. Published by DotEmu and developed by Lizardcube and based on Westone Bit Entertainment’s original game, the Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap remake is said to be made with the blessing of LAT and the cooperation of series creator Ryuichi Nishizawa. The game seemingly has no connecting with Wonder Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, despite also being made in cooperation with Ryuichi Nishizawa.

Interestingly, no mention of SEGA is made anywhere on the remake’s site, despite SEGA seemingly owning Wonder Boy. However, it is noted on the game’s website that “with the help of Ryuichi Nishizawa (Westone), Shinji Fujiwara (LAT), and a relentless commitment of DotEmu to untangle a bunch of documents covered in pixellated dustwebs, we have licensed the IP to create this new version (a first since 1994).”

The game has an unknown release date, and platforms are listed as consoles and PC. Check out the trailer above, and after the break read the full press release and check out some screenshots and artwork. More news on the remake as we hear it!
