Binary Domain debuts at #2 in Japan

This week saw the release of several new games in Japan, with SEGA’s Binary Domain likely being the main point of interest for anyone reading this website. As reported by Eurogamer with charts from NeoGAF, Nagoshi’s cover shooter debuted at #2, selling around 73,683 copies on the PS3, with the Xbox 360 version evidently not making the top 20.

It was a stronger Japanese debut than SEGA’s previous third person shooter, Vanquish, and a solid start for a new IP in that territory, though Binary Domain isn’t likely to become the next Yakuza over there at this rate. New Love Plus from Konami took the #1 spot with 104,969 while Square-Enix’s rhythm-based Final Fantasy spinoff settled for 3rd with 67,206.

SEGA Sammy Holding’s post half year results

SEGA Sammy posted their half year results for the period ending September 30th 2011. A difficult period saw that the publisher declined in both revenue and profit, numerous reasons from the natural disaster that struck Japan earlier this year that still holds ramification for the publisher today, to the weak global economy that is affecting consumer sales. In these tough times, read on to find out how the group managed.

Renegade Ops makes PSN best selling titles for September

Renegade Ops came out on September 13th and already made the list of the top 20 selling PSN titles for the month. The bad part? It came in #17 and was outsold by some older software.

Renegade Ops has gotten pretty good scores and we here at SEGAbits loved it. SEGA has stated that if the game sells well, there will be more games in the series.

Yakuza series sells over the 5 million mark

As I revealed in my last SEGA in the Charts post, the Yakuza series was due to cross over the 4 million mark in Japan if sales of Yakuza of the End were to continue and indeed, as confirmed by SEGA, it has shipped 400,000, which means that the series has crossed the 4 million mark in Japan. SEGA however also confirmed that the series has topped over 5 million units worldwide, making the series one of SEGA’s most consistent and best sellers in the last seven years.

Yakuza 4 the best selling Playstation 3 game of 2010 in Japan

Japan love their Yakuza games, almost as much as we like to play cowboys in the west with Red Dead Redemption. So its no surprise that Yakuza 4 is the best selling Playstation 3 game in Japan for 2010.

The game manage to sell 577,199 units in 9 months (was released in March 18, 2010). Sure it isn’t uber blockbuster numbers and it just beat out Sony’s Gran Turismo 5 which was released in November, that did 563,378 units.

Even though Yakuza 4 was the best selling Playstation 3 game, it still came in #16 for best selling Japanese game on all consoles. Damn those Japanese kids and their love for Monster Hunter, Super Mario and Pokemon!

Valkyria Chronicles 3 debuts at #2 in Japan

The latest weekly sales charts (January 24th-January 30th) out of Japan paint a nice picture for Valkyria Chronicles 3, which managed a series-best debut of 102,779 copies sold, good for second place behind Nintendo’s The Last Story. This was a little better than the first week sales of Valkyria Chronicles 2, which managed around 94,000 last year.

It’ll be interesting to see what SEGA’s future plans are for the franchise, with Sony’s new PSP system lingering on the horizon.

How well is Sonic 4 doing on XBLA?

Pretty well, it seems. According tot he latest charts, released by FADE (Forecasting and Analyzing Digital Entertainment) it came in number 2 for October, selling 98,000 Units. So who took the number one spot for the month? Dead Rising 2: Case Zero, which had longer to sell and was 400 points, compared to Sonic 4’s 1200. But it didn’t beat Sonic 4 by that much, only 6,000 units.

If that was not enough, Microsoft’s sales jumped 91% for October, thanks to big titles like Super Meat Boy, Dead Rising: Case Zero and of course Sonic 4.

Sonic Colours not off to a good start in the UK

Sonic Colours came out on Novemeber 12th, this chart ended on the 13th, so its only accounting for first day of sales, so take them as you will. If you see the Wii only games chart, it came in at number 11, being outsold bygames like Mario Galaxy 2, The X Factor and Sims 3. The game is way lower in the all format charts, came in at number 36, two spots higher than Sonic Free Riders.

Hopefully it sparks more fire next week on the charts, since these are really just ‘one day sales’, it is hard for the title to chart high. But hey, at least Football Manager 11 is rocking those charts.

Sonic 4 is best selling PSN game for October

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 seems to be a big hit on PSN, it was the best selling title for the month of October.

Glad to see that SEGA found success and it sucks that Double Fine’s Costume Quest didn’t rank higher, but it did come out towards the end of the month. If you want to watch the full episode of Pulse, you can find it here or on the Playstation Network.

Hayes says early Vanquish sales are encouraging

We already know how Vanquish did on its first day in Japan, but what about the America? Mike Hayes seems pretty positive.

“It’s been in the marketplace for two days, we’ve seen the day one numbers and we’re reasonably encouraged, but I think we need to see the rest of week one and probably week two just to see how it’s going to play out

“The challenge is that it’s a new franchise and that it’s releasing head-to-head with a lot of established franchises in the busiest time of the year.” – Mike Hayes CEO SEGA West

Vanquish came out on October 19th in North America, comes out tomorrow in Europe. Also, IGN gave us a shout out on this article, check the source link.

Vanquish first day Japanese sales are in

The first day sales for Vanquish are in and seem rather low. They aren’t a total failure, but I sort of assumed it would beat a Naruto game.

  • Vanquish PS3: 47,000 units
  • Vanquish 360: 9,000 units

Hopefully they sell more copies this whole week. For reference, the Naruto game on PS3 sold 72,000 copies and 13,000 on Xbox 360. I guess its too much to outsell a big anime IP like Naruto.

Bayonetta’s first day sales in Japan where much more positive, selling 93,000 on the PS3 and the Xbox 360 version selling 45,000 units. A Bayonetta size hit this game is not, at least in Japan.

SEGA talks fall line up and sales expectations

SEGA released some big hits in the beginning of the year, but so far hasn’t really set the charts on fire during the last few months.

But SEGA expects to do big numbers this Fall. New SEGA Europe boss, Jurgen Post, spoke about the latest SEGA titles and their expectations. SEGA wants to have a 10% attach rate for Sonic  Free Riders, he says the game’s success will depend on its hardware (Kinect).

Aliens vs Predator sells over 300,000 in the UK

The success of the new Aliens vs Predator game has no doubt taken everyone, including SEGA, by surprise and recently released figures from January – June 2010 just shows how much of a big impact the title has had for SEGA’s fortune in the United Kingdom. Not only did the title manage to get into a top ten position at eighth, but it even managed to outsell Final Fantasy XIII (Though to be fair to the latter, it was released a month later)

Top 10 selling games in UK (Jan-Jun):
Position / Title / Publisher / Sales
1. Just Dance (Ubisoft) – 940358
2. Red Dead Redemption (Rockstar/Take2) – 819161
3. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (Electronic Arts) – 590580
4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision Blizzard) – 540761
5. Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo) – 499998
6. Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo) – 439920
7. 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa (Electronic Arts) – 396858
8. Aliens vs Predator (SEGA) – 359968
9. Final Fantasy 13 (Square Enix Europe) – 339996
10. FIFA 10 (Electronic Arts) – 318719

It rounds off an excellent achievement for both publisher and developer and no doubt spells good news for Aliens fans eagerly awaiting either a sequel to Aliens vs Predator or the up and coming Aliens: Colonail Marines. It’ll be interesting to see what final sales figures for the title will be, as in console specfic charts for the UK, the title still retains a high title position but no doubt that Aliens vs Predator has been a massive success for SEGA.
