Review: The House of the Dead: Overkill – The Lost Reels (iOS)

Despite SEGA West whittling down the number of franchises they’ll be focusing on, the longtime classic franchise The House of the Dead has been kept alive (no pun intended, seriously) as of recent thanks to rereleases of arcade classics and expanded enhanced ports of the franchise’s most recent title The House of the Dead: Overkill. The 2009 Wii release became a cult classic, featuring a crazy re-imagining of the light gun shooter as a grindhouse flick complete with over the top gore, 70’s film stock effects, and gratuitous language. In 2011, The House of the Dead: Overkill Extended Cut released to the PS3 with enhanced visuals and new modes and stages. We thought that was it for the Overkill titles, but we were wrong. Dead wrong. SEGA has released The House of the Dead: Overkill once again, this time on iOS and Android devices. Enough with the introductions, let’s tear into this f***er!

New Sonic Lost World teaser appears on Facebook – more revealed May 29th

SEGA’s Facebook page has teased a new image from the upcoming Wii U and 3DS title Sonic Lost World. Accompanying the photo of six new characters is “Six will rise from the Lost World. Are they friends or foes? Find out on May 29th”. Could these be the guardians of the lost world? The six characters fit in with the standard number of zones found in most Sonic games, with six plus a final zone. Could each character represent an action stage, and introduce a new gameplay mechanic not unlike the wisps in Sonic Colors? So much to speculate until May 29th!

Speculate away in the dedicated Sonic Lost World topic over in the SEGAbits forums!

Check out SEGA’s big E3 2013 booth

southhalli2uqe

Above is the map of the South Hall from this year’s E3. Check out all the publishers. SEGA is sitting pretty up there with Activision Blizzard and Square-Enix. As you can see their booth is going to be pretty big, bigger than Capcom and Konami’s (who even have a new Metal Gear to show).

The odd thing is that SEGA hasn’t really been teasing too many games. I guess they do have heavy hitters coming like Company of Heroes 2, Total War: Rome 2 and of course Sonic Lost World. Who knows, we might even get new surprises on the Xbox One and Playstation 4! You can discuss SEGA’s booth with fans via our forum.

My Life with SEGA boots up and reviews the Genesis CDX

Time for another “classic” episode from My Life with SEGA where I review the Genesis CDX hardware, or Multi-Mega for those of you in Japan or the UK. Mind you, this is NOT a review of SEGA CD in general; just this specific piece of hardware.

Odd watching this again. This was made long before I joined SEGAbits and there are so many things I hint at here like Genesis/Star Trek, The Next Level. Hell, it practically foreshadows the 3rd Anniversary Contest and me ditching the Model 2….so fucking weird.

Anyway, on with the show! Enjoy, for this is the last old-school video I’ll be posting. It’s all new shit from this point forward. Like this video? Subscribe to the SEGAbits YouTube channel!

After the break, check out the teaser trailer for next week’s extra special episode: My Life with SEGA: The Next Level.

Total War to enter the world of historical adventure novels – reading as you truly imagined it!

I am a sucker for video game novels. I recall reading Myst: The Book of Atrus for a book report and thinking I was the coolest kid in school. SEGA Europe, in partnership with Pan Macmillan, will soon be releasing historical adventure novels based on the Total War franchise, so now kids can have a reason to read SEGA related books for school! Just tell them it’s world history. Coinciding with the release of Total War Rome II, SEGA plans to release four novels written by acclaimed adventure novelist David Gibbins. The first of these books, entitled Total War Rome II: Destroy Carthage, is due out September 3rd and can be pre-ordered now.

David Gibbons seems enthusiastic about the new series, stating “what really attracts me about the Total War games is their historical authenticity and attention to detail, as well as the contexts ranging from antiquity to more recent times that closely match my own range of interests. My novels will not only enrich the experience for Total War players but also stan alone in the wider market, where I see huge potential and an even bigger audience for the Total War franchise.” SEGA and Pan Macmillan plan to cross-promote the novels, including in-game marketing. Who knows, what you read could very well seep into the game you’re playing, allowing for a richer experience on both sides.

Virtua Fighter’s Jacky Bryant added to Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate’s roster

JackyB

Seems that Jacky Bryant will join his co-stars Pai Chan, Sarah Bryant Akira Yuki as a playable character in Dead or Alive 5. Only that Jacky Bryant is exclusive to Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate, Famitsu announced today. Seems that SEGA and Team Ninja have warmed up to the cross over, at this point they might as well create a Dead or Alive vs Virtua Fighter title. Or is that too long of a name?

Other chracters revealed for the Ultimate edition of the game includes Momoji (Ninja Gaiden series) and Ein. Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate comes out September 5th in Japan.

Altered Beast is the next 3D Classic for 3DS

  • “Whimsical transformation” Whatever that is.

  • Arcade sounds replace Genesis sounds.

SEGA Tunes: Outrun 2019’s Victorious and Feel the Beat

Screw the people who criticized the Genesis’s sound capabilities: they’ve clearly never heard Outrun 2019. This is the sort of soundtrack you want to listen to when your cruising down a road at 500 miles per hour! 2019 is one of the better examples of Genesis music I’ve heard, but I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised. Outrun has a heck of a legacy when it comes to video game music, especially since the original game probably has one of the best SEGA arcade soundtracks out there.

Hope you enjoyed Victorious! Please go below the fold for another awesome track, Feel the Beat.

SEGA Japan’s Facebook confirms Sonic Lost World coming Fall 2013

SonicLostWorlds

Sonic Lost World is all the rage on the internet and when I say rage I literally mean rage. Seems that most fans online aren’t very happy with the announcement that SEGA will be releasing the next three Sonic titles as Nintendo exclusives. We already wrote an article outlining why this isn’t such a bad thing. The next question is when will the game come out?

Well, according to SEGA Japan’s Facebook page you should expect to see it this holiday season. As expected, right? So start saving your pennies!

Yakuza 1&2 HD Wii U edition screenshots emerge

yakuza_1_2_hd_wii_u-9
It’s weird that SEGA has decided to port over Yakuza 1&2 HD to the Wii U. Maybe this is their first step in planning on bringing over the other Yakuza titles. Regardless, these two Yakuza titles (especially the second one) are the best Yakuza titles ever made. So if you never played a Yakuza game and they bring this over to America, do yourself a huge favor and pick it up.

Here we have screenshots. I know it isn’t fancy graphics, but they look rather nice for what they are; HD ports of Playstation 2 games. Hit the jump to see the rest of the screens.

Guilty Gear is Back With Some Very Impressive Visuals

Arc System Works announced their latest game: Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- today. This is the first new big entry in the Guilty Gear franchise since 2007 and also the third entry to be published by SEGA.

This new title uses Epic’s Unreal Engine, they used the engine to give the game a 2D sprite look in a 3D world, which like the video above shows looks pretty damn impressive. No release date or platforms have been announced yet, but you can probably expect it to be released in Arcades as well as on consoles.
