Super Monkey Ball for Playstation Vita leaked

Not formally announced but it seems that the newest entry into SEGA’s highly successful Super Monkey Ball series will be rolling onto the Playstation Vita. It seems SEGA America had left three images tagged PS Vita on their Flickr photostream. The manner of which this has occurred should be of no surprise to long term SEGA fans, as the company has been making numerous blunders ranging from leaked trailers to even full games.

One thing to be noted from the screens, however, is the absence of the red rails; an addition to the series for its debut on the Nintendo Wii, these rails have resulted in a decrease in the franchise’s complexity ever since. Whether this is an indication that the Monkey Ball series will be returning to its more traditionally challenging roots remains to be seen. Expect more in the coming days, as the Tokyo Game Show is about to get started.

Fan pays tribute to the Dreamcast by making custom Samba de Amigo toy

So now that we have cooled down from all the Dreamcast Anniversary posting, we can look at what some other people have been doing to celebrate Dreamcast’s 12 anniversary. This one comes in from Albert Art:

“I’m excited to reveal my latest custom toy, a 10″ MAD*L to celebrate the 12th Anniversary of the SEGA DREAMCAST which launched on 9.9.99 (September 9, 1999).

As a fan of the videogame console, and of the games on the Dreamcast, I decided to create this toy to pay respect to the long gone videogame platform, which inspired me to become an artist during high school. This is a very special toy, and I hope you enjoy it!

Editorial: Great DC games that most people hated

Today celebrates the North American launch of the Sega Dreamcast. Hard to believe that it really has been 12 years, but it was on September 9th, 1999 when SEGA’s final console had its North American release, and the gaming landscape arguably hasn’t been the same since.

There are of course many ways that I can, as a writer for a SEGA-driven website, choose to honor the system. In the end, though, I’ve decided to shed some light on Dreamcast games that don’t often make any lists, that aren’t looked back fondly upon, that will likley divide up even people who read this editorial. But these are games that were not met with warm reception, even back in the day, but that I loved anyway. Someone’s gotta remember them, right?

Weekly Five: Best Unknown Dreamcast games


We all know about Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue, Sonic Adventure, and Jet Set Radio. I don’t think there is a self-respecting SEGA fan alive who doesn’t know what all the best Dreamcast games are. But the Dreamcast’s library is large, and I’ll bet there are five games out there many of you have not played. This list is devoted to those games, the most overlooked awesome games on the Dreamcast!

Operation G.H.O.S.T trailer

The first official trailer for the sequel to one of SEGA’s best received arcade on-rail shooters has been released. The theme music is being done by legendary SEGA musician Takenobu Mitsuyoshi and uses his unique brand of Engrish. The trailer showcases several stages in the game, ranging from a desert at sunset to a freight ship. Expect Operation G.H.O.S.T to be available to Western markets as SEGA Amusement handles operational duties in Western territories.

Years of the Dreamcast Part 1: Genesis

Years of the Dreamcast is my first stab at autobiographical writing. It is long and is largely a tribute to the Dreamcast’s effect on my life. For those of you brave enough to read a bit about my boring life, my hat goes off to you. I hope you enjoy reading about my Dreamcast experience, and are willing to share yours with the community as well.

Believe it or not, I didn’t really get into gaming with the SEGA Genesis. Or the SNES. Or any other old school console for that matter. Sure, I PLAYED games on my Genesis and Game Gear back in the day, like Sonic, Lion King, and Ecco, but as soon as the Genesis croaked in 1996 I nearly left gaming all together in favor of other interests, including something that got me to buy a Genesis in the first place: Archie’s Sonic comics. I completely passed over the 32 bit generation, something I now sincerely regret given SEGA had some of its best games during that era.

It wasn’t until 2000 that a game console again caught my interest: a SEGA Dreamcast in a Target demo kiosk. I had been playing the N64 and Playstation in kiosks for years, and as much fun as I had had with them, this new system, this Dreamcast, felt like something special. The game on display, Sonic Adventure, was immediately playable. There was no wandering around or collecting of trinkets required to progress: an entire level was immediately opened up to me after the title screen.

The Dreamcast turns 12 today!

It has been 12 years since that sweet white dream machine landed on American shores and blew us away with a stellar launch line up. Gaming has changed quite a bit, most of it thanks to stuff started by SEGA with the Dreamcast.

Even though we still get plenty of games, I think we can all agree on one thing; It’s not the same without having a SEGA console. Can you believe that SEGA hasn’t released a console in 12 years? I feel old.

Sonic Generations Release Date Official

Sonic Generations finally has an official release date, courtesy of their game page. The US will be getting the game before Europe this time around, which sort of makes up for Europe exclusively getting the best Sonic game package ever made. US gamers will be getting Generations November 1st, Australia will get the game November 3rd, and Europe will get it November 4th.

The 3DS version of the game is still listed as only “late 2011”, but if Sonic Colors DS is any indication, it’ll probably be out day and date with its console counterpart.

Guardian Heroes – Japanese Trailer

Check this out, Sega Japan has released a new trailer for Guardian Heroes and it’s looking bloody good! If this doesn’t fill you with warm bubbly nostalgia I don’t know what will. From the cheesy music to the bright, bold graphics this reminds me of a better, simpler time for gaming.

Guardian Heroes will be released on October 12th exclusively for XBLA and will cost you $10.

Sega Announces Sonic Generations Collector’s Set Exclusive for Europe.

UPDATE: Available in Australia too. Rumored at $200 (AUS)

Today, Sega decided to torture me by showing off the Sonic Generations Collector’s edition exclusively for Europe (I’m American).

Included in the collector’s edition is a collectable figurine featuring both Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic, an exclusive, individually numbered commemorative “Gold Ring”, and a “20 Years of Sonic Art” book, containing never before seen sketches and images from the past 20 years. Also contained in the Collector’s Edition are the ‘20th Anniversary Sonic Soundtrack’ featuring a selection of tracks handpicked by Sonic Team, and the ‘History of Sonic: Birth of an Icon’ documentary, an exclusive collection of interviews and footage charting Sonic’s life from inception through to becoming one of the most iconic characters in videogame history. Limited edition lenticular packaging and bonus additional downloadable content for the game are the final components that make up this unique collector’s edition for Sonic Generations.

No details have been given on price. Man, I GOTTA have this thing!! I just got to figure out how. Help me in the comments folks! …Please?

SECOND UPDATE: It appears Amazon Germany will ship the game to the United States. Total cost is $138 after shipping and price conversion. Not too shabby! Better than $200 at least.

New Shinobi 3DS Trailer: Evil Rises

Check out this new footage from the upcoming Shinobi title. I have to say, not a bad trailer. Visually it definitely leans more on the level of the DS than the 3DS: a wasted opportunity to do something special with the franchise revival from a graphics standpoint. That said, I can’t deny that it features a pretty cool art style with what looks like some stylish story sequences.

Shinobi 3DS will be available in November exclusively for Nintendo’s 3D handheld.

Sega Blog posts Q&A with Rise of Nightmares developers

Today saw the release of Rise of Nightmares in North America, and to help satisfy our craving for zombie craziness, SEGA has posted an interview with the game’s producer and director (Satoshi Ito and Ryuta Ueda, respectively) to their blog. The interview covers a wide range of topics, such as those discussing the target audience, the aims of the development team, the game’s lack of firearms, the composition of the music, as well as the title’s similarities to House of the Dead.

Rise of Nightmares is being created by the team behind House of the Dead, what similarities can we expect?

Ito: Actually, I’m the only one in the Rise of Nightmares team who used to be a member of the House of the Dead team, and I worked for the first original House of the Dead title. As for “similarities” with House of the Dead, there are lots they have in common; such as: having the player stand while gameplay, first-person view, and life-size zombies are coming closer, but the major similarity is that developing a Kinect title is much alike with developing an arcade game (AC), which is one of SEGA ‘s greatest talent. When developing a new title for AC, we usually think about what to carry (or to ride on), where to place the buttons, and how to play the game. At the first phase of House of the Dead development, we have tested various things like implementing a mechanic where the player can kick by pedaling. House of the Dead has ultimately turned out to be a simple game, but we have made use of those trial-and-error experiences for this title.

Guardian Heroes coming to XBLA on October 12th


We had a false alarm last week, when Major Nelson said that Guardian Heroes was suppose to come out. It actually did come out on Mexico’s XBLA, but was quickly taken down. Now SEGA says we actually have to wait till next month before we get to play Guardian Heroes and its 12 player online co-op.

As for readers, like myself, that would prefer a PSN version, there is nothing to announce at this moment. So if you have an Xbox 360, put down 800pts when this hits the service on October 12th.
