Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice moved to 2016… and SEGA says it’s a good thing!

Rumors were circulating that SEGA’s upcoming Nintendo 3DS title Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice, the sequel to last year’s Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, was delayed from its original release date of Holiday 2015 to 2016 after video game rental company GameFly revised their release info. Now, SEGA has officially confirmed the delay and surprisingly are being open about why the game has been delayed. Sonic franchise social media and PR superstar Aaron Webber has posted an article on the SEGA Blog explaining that they want to give the game the time and polish needed. No exact window has been given, only that “it’ll be ready when it’s ready!”

Aaron added “In the grand scheme of things, while the downside is that you won’t be playing the game this year, the upside is that what you’ll play next year, and what fans will continue to play for years after they pick up the game, will be a stronger, more enjoyable experience. We think that’s important, not just for this one game, but for all future Sonic titles.”

A round of applause to SEGA for such a move, especially after the (Sonic) rush jobs that were Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal. While no mention was made of Sonic’s 25th anniversary title, the mention that this mindset has been applied to all future Sonic games is comforting. Sonic Team has had a good five years since Sonic Generations, their last multi-platform Sonic title. Here’s hoping that this mindset was in effect for the main series and it has finally made its way to the West to influence the non-Sonic Team titles.

Just sounds like PR talk to me. Doubt it’ll be much better.

I don’t know what’s worse: that they just now decided that delaying games is a good thing, or the fact that they chose Sonic Boom of all games to do it with. How about we actually see Sonic Team use this philosophy before we start assuming good things will come our way?
