Sonic 4: Episode 2 will only have one throwback level

Over at the official SEGA of America forums, a fan brought up the ultimate question. Are we going to suffer through throwbacks the whole time like episode one? Good news, Sonic 4 brand manager Ken Balough says that no, we won’t. He confirms that only one of the zones is a genuine throwback.

Also there is going to be a nice unveiling later this month. Now, he does admit that fans will call anything a throwback, only because it’s a similar environment. Read his full response after the jump.

Mario and Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games 3DS gets a launch trailer

SEGA has released a launch trailer for the 3DS version of the latest Mario and Sonic mashup, and it looks like fans of past iterations will get more of the same here. If nothing else, this installment looks to make use of many of the 3DS’ features, and the visuals are a major step up from past handheld Mario and Sonic Olympics games.

There’s something that genuinely interests me about the Adventure Mode, which, as the trailer shows off, features Bowser and Eggman working together on some sort of master plan. That said, having played the demo, this game just isn’t for me. But for fans of mini game compilations, this might actually be a better buy than the Wii version released last year.

Check out Binary Domain’s Multiplayer Mode in this new trailer

With Binary Domain set to launch at the end of this month, SEGA’s has released this new trailer showing the mulitplayer mode off for the first time since mentioning it late last year. The trailer shows off the two forces players can take control of: either the resistence fighters or the elite government soldiers as they go head to head in several modes. Also showcased towards the end of the trailer is the game’s very own horde mode, where players will take control of humans as they try to take down armies of robots. Binary Domain is set to release 16th February in Japan, 24th February in Europe and Australia and 28th February for the United States on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

Mario & Sonic at the London Olympic Games 3DS gets two new commercials

If there is one thing that the Mario & Sonic fanchise knows how to do, it’s advertise. They have some of the best commercials in the industry, and watching these two new ads makes me want to get up and buy the game. I have actually played the demo and it was pretty decent. I’m not super into mini games, but these titles just keep getting better and better.

Who knows, maybe one day SEGA and Nintendo will wise up and drop the Olympic license? I can dream, can’t I? Hit the jump for the second ad.

SEGA is already working on the next Shining project

SEGA seems to be pushing the Shining series as much as possible, so much so that they tweeted an announcement on their Shining Blade twitter account. What was it? Well, a hint on the next Shining game will be inside of Shining Blade’s package.

So what is the announcement? We don’t know, we will have to wait till the game comes out on March 15th in Japan. If it was Capcom, i’d wager it was the announcement of “Ultimate Shining Blade”.

Aliens: Colonial Marines box art released

Aliens: Colonial Marines just seems like one of those titles that will never come up. We have been covering the game for more than a year, we were promised a spring release date but it seems to have been delayed to fall. No problems, here is a very early look at the box art. Now you know what to look for on those scary game shelves.

Black Panther 2 to feature lots of cats

Are you a cat lover? So are lots of Japanese people it seems. Did you know in Japan they have such a thing as ‘Cat Cafes’?  In Black Panther 2, you will be looking for Tsukahara who runs the fighting tournaments, but before you can enter he will force you to find his 102 cats. Pictured above is the new mission revealed by SEGA.

Talking about collecting, you can also collect sexy cards that if you put together in the right order create a sexy lady. That’s right, cats and wank materiel in one game? It does have it all.

SEGA Australia lays off 37 people

If you guys recall, SEGA was hiring and opening studios in SEGA Australia like they were giving them away. Their SEGA Australia team sadly didn’t deliver hits, releasing the low selling Stormrise. SEGA is restructuring SEGA Australia to focus on digital releases.

“The rise of digital gaming provides an opportunity to align the studio with a rapidly growing market at a time when the games industry is undergoing a significant transition. To this end, we can confirm that SSA has signed a multi-product deal focussing across the digital marketplace. We have commenced development on these titles and will announce more details in the near future. As part of this focus on digital avenues, there is a requirement to re-structure the studio resources accordingly and regrettably, we are announcing the loss of 37 staff. The decision to downsize was not taken lightly but this strategic re-structure will ensure we have a more effective and agile team that will enable us to quickly adapt to consumer needs and deliver strong content across multiple digital platforms. We thank those team members affected for their contributions and wish them well in their future endeavours.” – SEGA to Kotaku

SEGA Studios Australia is the developer doing the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games. They stated that the development on that title is nearing completion. The studio has signed a mutli-product deal that will mean releasing games for a digital marketplace. The details and titles are yet to be revealed.

Check out Three Rings’ office in this developer interview for Doctor Who: Worlds in Time

Developer Three Rings was already working on Doctor Who: World in Time before SEGA purchased them and the publisher made no mention of the game based on the highly popular and critcially acclaimed science fiction show until today when SEGA posted on their official blog a behind the scenes interview with Daniel Jones of Three Rings. The video offers glimpses of some gameplay and of a very nicely fitted office for the developer themselves. Follow the source link below to find screenshots, wallpapers and artwork for Doctor Who: Worlds in Time featured all on SEGA’s official blog.

Binary Domain: Xbox 360 vs PS3 version

You’d think that this is a post full of drama where someone that bought one of the two leading HD consoles will end up butt hurt, but it really isn’t. It seems that The Yakuza team did really well, at least in demo form. The latest Binary Domain (released in the Japanese XBL/PSN) demo  is taken for a test drive and compared. So what is the better version of the game?

That will depend on what you prefer. Either version looks about the same, but there are small differences. Livedoor says that they think the Xbox 360 version is running 4xMSAA, while it seems that the PS3 version is running MLAA. If the PS3 version is running MLAA, then this will be the first Japanese game to use the feature on the PS3. You can tell that the PS3 version has better  anti-aliasing than the 360 version, especially the close ups. But the 360 version looks ‘sharper’.

Not only that, it seems that the demo version of Binary Domain on PS3 has some framerate issues. The 360 version usually averaged 30 frames per second (24 to 30fps) the PS3 version averaged 29fps (18.5 to 30.5fps). The 360 version had 0.183% tearing, while the PS3 had no screen tearing. Have to say, its weird how the 360 version is doing so well when its the team’s first Xbox 360 game.

Dates for Sonic Boom and Summer of Sonic announced

Hedgehog Day news continues!

Sonic fans will get a double dose of events this year as both dates for Summer of Sonic and Sonic Boom have been announced. Summer of Sonic will take place in London (no EXACT location yet) on July 7 while Sonic Boom will be held in San Diego at the House of Blues on July 13th during the San Diego Comic Con. That pretty much guarantees that I’ll be there. With the dates so close together, it’s hard to determine what Sonic talent will show up where. But I’d bet a shiny nickel that at the very least, the Archie comic talent will be at Sonic Boom.
