Project X Zone 2 screens and art of Segata Sanshiro and Space Channel 5’s Shadow surface

Yesterday, Japan’s SEGA Saturn mascot Segata Sanshiro was revealed to be appearing in the Capcom/Bandai Namco/SEGA crossover Project X Zone 2. Today, we have official art and screens of Segata Sanshiro via a new article from Famitsu! Segata will be a Solo Unit in the game, meaning he can be attached to a Pair Unit acting as an assist. Also in the Famitsu article is character art and screens of Space Channel 5 Part 2‘s Shadow, leader of the Rhythm Rogues. Shadow will be a non-playable enemy character, meaning players can pit Ulala against her former foe. Also revealed is the trio of Zephyr, Vashyron and Leanne from Resonance of Fate, all of which appeared in the last game. However, it looks like Vashyron and Leanne are trading places, making Zephyr and Vashyron a Pair Unit and Leanne a Solo Unit.

Segata Sanshiro is confirmed for Project x Zone 2

Segata Sanshiro, the fictional marketing character created by SEGA Japan during the Sega Saturn era seems to be making a sort of ‘revival’. It was confirmed on Weekly Famitsu that Segata Sanshiro will have  his own playable solo unit character on the upcoming Project X Zone 2! No screenshots yet, but we will post them when we get them.

The following characters from other publishers have also been confirmed:

  • Captain Commando (Captain Commando, Capcom)
  • June Lin Milliam (Star Gladiator, Capcom)
  • Heihachi Mishima (Tekken, Bandai Namco).

Project X Zone 2 hits Japan on November 12th, North America and Europe players get it early 2016. Check out all the Segata Sanshiro commercials while you wait!

SEGA 3D Reprint Archives 2 announced, with more boxart by Ken Sugimori and a new 3D Classic teased

Well, this came out of nowhere! SEGA 3D Reprint Archives 2 is officially a thing, in Japan at least.

For those unaware, a while back SEGA released a few of M2’s amazing 3DS remakes of various SEGA games in a physical collection. Now Japan’s getting another one of these packs, but it looks to be something special; notice the mosaic. There’s clearly another character there, and it seems to be hinting at a new 3D Classic. I think the best guess I can muster is that it’s Gillius Thunderhead of Golden Axe riding a Chickenleg, but we’ll have to wait and see!

Currently confirmed for the collection are Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beast, Fantasy Zone II W, Thunder Blade, and Galaxy Force II, all in their remastered 3D Classics state. Various bonuses are also slated to be included; for reference, the previous physical release contained an improved version of Space Harrier’s 3DS port, as well as ports of Space Harrier 3D and OutRun 3D from the SEGA Master System; all of which we haven’t gotten over here on the eShop.

The new collection’s also rocking some amazing cover art by Pokemon legend Ken Sugimori once again; it’s surreal seeing someone well-known as a Nintendo and Pokemon artist drawing Sonic!

As mentioned, there’s no word of this coming here; and given the fact the last collection didn’t release here it’s really unlikely this will (unless SEGA decide Sonic gives it selling power…).

We’ll keep an eye out for any further news on this, including that mystery game and any new bonus features.

Review: Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX (Nintendo 3DS)

If you read last week’s preview, you’d know that I was feeling quite positive about what I had experienced in playing SEGA’s latest Nintendo 3DS title Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX. Now that I’ve had an additional week, I’ve experienced a bit more of what the game has to offer. Rhythm modes have ramped up the difficulty factor, I’ve been able to experience the game’s StreetPass/SpotPass functions, and it was even a certain vocaloid’s birthday. SO without further ado, let’s turn on the lights, grab a mic, and hit the stage for our review of Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX!

7th Dragon III Code: VFD trailers show off ‘Fortuner’ and ‘Samurai’ jobs

SEGA has posted a couple of trailers on their Japanese YouTube channel showing off the selectable ‘Fortuner’ and ‘Samurai’ jobs for their upcoming 7th Dragon III Code: VFD  Nintendo 3DS RPG.

The Fortuner is an astrologer of the battlefield, meaning that you can spread abnormal status ailments and cause massive damage. The weakness for a Fortuner is that they have low defense and health. While the Samurai are good all around, has a balance of offense and defense. They can also use blades and two handed-swords which unlocks skills differing depending on what way you go.

7th Dragon III Code: VFD comes out in Japan on October 15th. No western release date has been announced, which is a bit sad considering how much in-house SEGA developers worked on this one.

Preview: Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX (Nintendo 3DS)

Thanks to an advance review copy, I’ve been having fun with Miku for close to two weeks now. While this is merely a preview and not a full-on review of the game (which will post on September 4th before the game releases), I did want to give some early impressions from the point of view of a Hatsune Miku newbie.

That’s right, despite contributing to SEGA fan sites since Miku made her SEGA debut in 2009, I have not laid hands on a Miku game until I received my download code for Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX. Prior to this, I reported the occasional press release, posted trailers when they hit, and sat on the sidelines while fellow fans either bemoaned the franchise or celebrated it. Up until now, I knew about the vocaloid craze, I knew that that the SEGA developed games were rhythm based, and I loved the Domino’s Japan campaign as evidenced by my earlier reference to it. But outside of that? Miku was a mystery. But not anymore. So now that I’ve finally had a chance to play a Hatsune Miku game, what do I think of it so far and what do I think the average SEGA fan will enjoy? Let’s find out!

is another SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive classic that found massive success and introduced most SEGA fans to Treasure games. The studio was made up of ex-Konami employees and this anime style run and gun shooter really shows that you can make a Japanese looking game work for a Western audience . While the game is fine and dandy on the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive, how is the Nintendo 3DS version? Well, let’s find out.

Stella Glow’s latest trailer introduces us to Witch Tuning

So Atlus USA has posted the following trailer showing off the gameplay mechanic knowing as Witch Tuning for their upcoming American 3DS JRPG published game Stella Glow (SEGA published it in Japan).

It seems that if your ‘tiny female’ characters except a man into their heart they can awake their inner Goddesses? At least that is what I got from the trailer and I’m not sure how that will fly over with the new sensitive generation of gamers. What are your thoughts?

Atlus’ launch day edition of The Legend of Legacy is pretty awesome

The Legend of Legacy is a Nintendo 3DS RPG developed by Furyu and this game is actually mean’t to be the spiritual sequel to the long running SaGa series. Atlus USA seemed to be pretty impressed with the game since they picked up US publishing rights, while NIS America will publish it in Europe (yeah, weird).

Atlus just announced a firm date of release, the game will hit North American shelves on October 13th. Not only that, they also showed off the ‘Launch Edition’ which comes with the following items:

  • A copy of the game
  • Collector’s box
  • 10-track Masashi Hamauzu original soundtrack
  • Premium 40-page hardcover art book featuring character artwork, concept sketches, monster pages, and background art, accompanied by commentary from the game’s character artist Tomomi Kobayashi

How much is this ‘Launch Day’ edition going to cost you, the consumer? The regular price of $39.99, which is actually cheaper than most recent Atlus 3DS releases (they have been priced at $49.99). Hey, support the game early and get free stuff. Can’t complain.

 

Atlus USA shows off Stella Glow’s English opening movie, new screens and US box art

Originally Stella Glow was suppose to be not only developed by Imageepoch, but also published by them. Sadly they went bankrupt and SEGA picked up publishing duties for the game in Japan, while Atlus USA picked up publishing for the West. Today Atlus USA has posted the following opening movie for the English release of Stella Glow, featuring new music and introducing us to the main cast of characters. Atlus also posted the following information regarding the game:

  • Song Magic: Famous Japanese voice actors sing more than 20 songs in the game. Plus, the soundtrack is composed by Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger, Xenogears). The songs are part of Song Magic – a vital combat and story element.
  • Players will get an allotment of Free Time where they can upgrade or buy items, tune Witches’ hearts, explore, and grind experience, but that’s in limited supply as Combat Time will drive along the game’s story.
  • Stella Glow will have 40-60 hours of story and side quest content, with multiple endings, New Game+ mode, and more than 50 maps to battle on, the world of Stella Glow is rich and vibrant with tons to do!
  • From the team behind the classic Luminous Arc games comes a brand new IP with the same renowned strategic combat.

Stella Glow will be released exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS and according to Atlus USA it will be available this holiday season (Amazon has it listed for November 17th and priced at $49.99). Below is the new box art (same as Japanese version) for the US release and new screenshots of the game.

SEGA has released 7th Dragon III Code: VFD’s ‘World Introduction’ trailer

RPGs are all about giving a character a living world that they explore, its part of the fun of playing these role playing games and SEGA has just released a trailer to show off their world of 7th Dragon III Code: VFD on the Nintendo 3DS.

7th Dragon III Code: VFD will take you on a trip to the past, present and future. In the trailer you get to see Nodens Enterprise and the Tokyo Subway (present day), Atlantis  and Berk Ocean Palace (past), and the Kazan Republic (future).

7th Dragon III Code: VFD hits Japanese store shelves on October 15th, no Western release date has been announced.

Review: 3D Streets of Rage 2 (Nintendo 3DS)

If you owned a SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive in the early 90’s, you are well aware of what Streets of Rage series was all about, its SEGA’s answer to (the then) Nintendo console exclusive franchise Final Fight (though it did get a SEGA CD entry). Its been well over a decade since the franchise debuted on SEGA’s 16-bit hardware, which is quite a long time.

Now as an adult can the game bring back those nostalgic memories that shaped my gaming habits or is Streets of Rage 2 just one of those games that I liked as a kid but aged badly? Or even worse, a bad port? Let’s find out

Watch Sonic rescue Tails in 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s credit sequence

M2 really likes having goofy credit sequences in their SEGA 3D Classics line of games, in this one we see each unique enemy type being shown off with a sequence of iterations with either Sonic or Tails. The Tails ones seem to involve him getting hit by said baddies and having Sonic come rescue him.

Sit and appreciate all the different unique baddies with their own animation that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 had to offer. Now I want to play 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2... I guess we will have to wait until September.

3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2 trailer in actual 3D hits online

Sonic and his two-tailed friend Tails hit the Nintendo 3DS on Thursday over in Japan  with 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2. To celebrate the release SEGA has released the following trailer… in 3D. Yes, if you didn’t know Youtube supports 3D videos.

This 3D Sonic the Hedgehog trailer is stereoscopic 3D which means you can view with red and blue 3D glasses. We will keep you informed on the US and European release dates, but I’m hearing its coming out sometime in September.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games heading to arcades!

SEGA has revealed that Mario and Sonic will be heading to arcades together for the first time, as part of their latest Olympics team-up. The games will be getting location tests starting today and running through July 20 at the Club SEGA in Akihabara and the SEGA World in Kasai.

It is currently unknown whether the arcade version will be a port of content from the Wii U version or be a completely unique game. At the very least, the game will have unique controls, going by the design of the cabinets.

Mario and Sonic 2016 will be launching for the Wii U and 3DS next year. It is currently unknown when the final version of the arcade game will hit Japanese arcades, and whether or not these machines will appear in Western arcades.
