7th Dragon III Code: VFD pays homage to Jet Set Radio

7thdragonjet.jpgSEGA’s upcoming Nintendo 3DS game 7th Dragon III Code: VFD will launch this summer, launch copies of the game will come with an art book. It seems fans paid close attention to the character art that has been release as a Siliconera reader has pointed out that the male Agent Class in the game has a Jet Set Radio Future themed shirt. Look closely, you see it? Its the Jet Soul symbol!

Miwa Shirow, the character designer for 7th Dragon III Code: VFD is a huge fan of SEGA’s Jet Set Radio franchise and has stated that the goal of the Agent Class is to be “street-wise youth” type of design. The Male Agent’s internal name is actually “Jet” as well, if you needed more to tie it to Jet Set Radio.

That isn’t the only reference to a classic SEGA franchise, if you look at the buttons on his chest there is a symbol from Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Oratori Tangram. Pretty neat stuff.  7th Dragon III Code: VFD hits American store shelves this summer, pre-order it and secure your launch day edition art book!

7th Dragon III Code: VFD Nintendo 3DS launch edition to include art book

unnamed (2)

In a clear case of SEGA’s acquisition of Atlus rubbing off on SEGA of America comes news of yet another launch edition of an upcoming physical release. SEGA 3D Classics Collection has decals, Valkyria Chronicles Remastered has a steelbook case, and now 7th Dragon III Code: VFD has been confirmed to include a 28-page art book and collector’s box. SEGA promises that the art book will contain “a closer look at the design work that went in to creating the game’s esoteric character classes, ferocious dragons, vile monsters, and the environments that span three time periods”. The box will likely be no different from the Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX launch edition, which is a cardboard box featuring the game’s case art. Still, it looks nice on a shelf.

7th Dragon III: Code VFD will arrive this summer in retail stores and on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS in the Americas. The game will be available for $39.99/CA$54.99 and had been rated T by the ESRB. For more information please visit: http://7thdragon.sega.com

SEGA News Bits: 7th Dragon III: Code VFD is coming to America

Another SEGA of Japan game is making its way to the Americas, and this time its 7th Dragon III: Code VFD for the Nintendo 3DS. In this SEGA News Bits, George and Barry share their thoughts on this happy development and discuss both the upcoming game and the franchise. While the first 7th Dragon released back in 2009 to the Nintendo DS to Japan, 7th Dragon III: Code VFD is the franchise’s debut in the west. Is SEGA taking a gamble with the game, or is this a brave new world of SEGA of America releasing niche titles with little expectation of games attaining “pillar franchise” status? All this and more is discussed in the video above. Click play and check it out!

Nintendo 3DS RPG 7th Dragon III Code: VFD announced for summer 2016 Americas release

The localizations keep on coming! SEGA has just announced that the Nintendo 3DS dungeon crawling RPG 7th Dragon III Code: VFD will be receiving a physical release in the Americas. The original game released in Japan on October 15, 2015, while the localized release is set for a summer 2016 release. Not too bad a gap!

The 7th Dragon franchise has been a Japan-exclusive series, releasing to handhelds like the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. 7th Dragon III Code: VFD is the franchise’s third main series title and the franchise’s first appearance on the 3DS as well as the first title to receive a western release. If you’re afraid jumping into the third game in the series will leave you lost, don’t worry. SEGA knows that too, as their press release specifically mentions that the game is a “self-contained episode”. The game will retail for $39.99/CA$54.99 and, as mentioned, will be a physical release (feels so good to type that). No word on Europe yet.

Check out the trailer above, and more information about the game and screenshots after the break!

7th Dragon III debuts in Japan, reaches #1 on sales chart

7thDragon1inJapanThis wasn’t the best week overall for game sales in Japan, with SEGA’s 7th Dragon III Code: VFD taking the number one spot and pushing Yo-Kai Watch Busters: Red Cat Team/White Dog Squad to second place. The SEGA published SRPG on 3DS did 72,477 units on its debut week and was good enough to top all other games for said week.

Check out the top 20 software chart for Japan, which includes total numbers. This chart takes place between October 12th – the 18th, 7th Dragon III came out on the 15th, so it had about 3 days on sale.

7th Dragon III Code: VFD demo hits Japanese e-shop

208235687thdragon3codevfdjapanesetrailerign-1436207068864
SEGA’s 7th Dragon III Code: VFD demo has hit the Japanese e-shop, letting players play the prologue of the game and even giving them special bonus items for the full retail version (when it hits Japan October 15th). The demo will allow users to play Chapter 0 and Chapter 1, sadly in the demo you are given a pre-created character and capped at level 10.

If you transfer the demo save to the full retail version, you get:

  • EX Upper: an accessory that increases experience points gain by x1.2
  • Skill Upper: an accessory that increases skill point gain by x1.2
  • Nagamimi’s Charm: an accessory that increases attack, speed, and evasion of the user.
  • 10,000Az: in-game currency that can be used to make purchases.

If you wanted to just go to the Japanese e-shop on your non-Japanese 3DS, you will have to modify it due to Nintendo’s amazing region locking. There hasn’t been a western released teased and seeing as how we missed the last three entries in the series, its safe to say this won’t come here either. But you can always gawk at YouTube footage of someone playing the demo and envy them.

7th Dragon III Code: VFD trailers show off ‘Fortuner’ and ‘Samurai’ jobs

SEGA has posted a couple of trailers on their Japanese YouTube channel showing off the selectable ‘Fortuner’ and ‘Samurai’ jobs for their upcoming 7th Dragon III Code: VFD  Nintendo 3DS RPG.

The Fortuner is an astrologer of the battlefield, meaning that you can spread abnormal status ailments and cause massive damage. The weakness for a Fortuner is that they have low defense and health. While the Samurai are good all around, has a balance of offense and defense. They can also use blades and two handed-swords which unlocks skills differing depending on what way you go.

7th Dragon III Code: VFD comes out in Japan on October 15th. No western release date has been announced, which is a bit sad considering how much in-house SEGA developers worked on this one.

Hit the jump to see the Samurai class trailer.

Wonder Festival 2015 reveals new Jet Set Radio, Virtua Fighter, Yakuza, 7th Dragon, Persona 3, and SEGA Hard Girls figures

SEGAFigures7thDragonJetSetVirtuaFighterPersona

It seems that this year’s Wonder Summer Festival 2015  was totally worth looking into if you’re a big SEGA fan since they got a ton of figures announced. How many? Seven figures spanning six franchises including Jet Set Radio, Virtua Fighter, Yakuza, 7th Dragon, Persona 3, and even SEGA Hard Girls got represented with a figure (a convention exclusive one no less). Here is the list of figures announced at the event:

As you can tell most of these are very early in production with some figures not being shown painted and some not even having a picture of what the figures looks like. This is a very early announcement and when more photos become available we shall post it on the blog, so stay tuned. I have to be honest, I’m a sucker for the old Virtua Fighter graphics, so I’ll probably end up picking those two figures up. What about you guys?

7th Dragon III Code: VFD debut trailer hits the internet

SEGA has released the debut trailer for their newly announced Nintendo 3DS RPG, 7th Dragon III Code: VFD. Seeing the title you might think this is the 3rd entry to SEGA’s 7th Dragon RPG series which debuted back in 2009 on the Nintendo DS. This is actually the 4th entry, since the game got two games on the PSP after the debut DS game. Sadly these games have stayed in Japan. There have been fan translations released online, if that’s your thing.

While the song on the trailer is by another group, the in-game music will be done by SEGA legendary composer Yuzo Koshiro (Streets of Rage fame). This is a weird entry in the series as imageepoch (developer of the first three games) will not be developing this title due to their bankruptcy issues. Also series producer and SEGA veteran Rieko Kodama (Phantasy Star series, Skies of Arcadia) is not returning as producer. You can read my other article on the people behind this game, here. The game releases in Japan on October 15th, 2015.
