SEGA and NIS America team up to distribute Ys VIII, Disgaea 5 Complete & more

NISAMERICASEGATEAMDuring the NIS America streaming event earlier today, the company announced that it was teaming up with SEGA/Atlus to distribute a multitude of games throughout North America. This doesn’t mean that SEGA/Atlus is publishing them, NIS America is still the publisher on the box but SEGA is the distributor. What does that mean? I have no clue. Is this SEGA and NIS America team up to make it easier to distribute these titles to more mainstream shops?

SEGA is listed as distributing the following titles part of their SEGA and NIS America team up:

That’s quite the number of titles. What are your thoughts on SEGA and NIS America team up? I personally love it, I have always wanted SEGA to push more Japanese skewed titles over here and this is a good start. With SEGA already buying Atlus, would you guys freak out of they also picked up NIS America?

The blurb states that Dr. Eggman will be the main villain, that there will be no multiplayer features, and that the genre for the game is “adventure”. The magazine also features Sonic Mania, but the information included was revealed months ago.

There will be more information on Project Sonic 2017 and Sonic Mania on March 16th during the SXSW 2017 panel for Sonic the Hedgehog, which you can learn more about here.

Update: the magazine also confirms that Sonic Mania will feature multiplayer.

Rumor: Sonic Mania to get a physical release [update]

sonic mania physical

Up to this point, we knew that the anticipated Sonic Mania was coming to the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and more recently Nintendo Switch as a digital download. However, recent images suggest that Sonic Mania may also get a physical release, at least for the Nintendo Switch version. @SuperAj3 on Twitter recently posted an image of mockup cases for Sonic Mania, originally from EBGames Australia. According to him, he asked the people behind the counter about the game, and it was in their database. Later, another Twitter post from the official EBGames Australia account claims that they are “expecting” a physical release for Sonic Mania at this stage.

Together, this hints at Sonic Mania getting a physical release, at least for the Nintendo Switch version in Australia. However as of this writing, nothing from SEGA has been officially confirmed. It’s also unknown if a physical release will be available in other regions or if there will be physical releases for the other versions such as for the PS4 and Xbox One.

[Update] Sonic the Hedgehog social media manager, Aaron Webber, has taken to Twitter to set the record straight. According to him, there isn’t ‘currently’ news on the physical release.

“Hi guys – there’s currently no news on a physical release for Sonic Mania, sorry. We’ll let you know if anything changes. Thanks!” – Aaron Webber

Weird choice of using ‘no news on a physical release’ instead of ‘no plans’, but we shall see what happens in the near future. [/update]

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap coming to the Nintendo Switch

WonderBoyTheDragonsTrap-NintendoSwitch
Recently after the Nintendo Switch Presentation, the developers at DotEmu  announced that the remake of the SEGA Master System classic, Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap, would be coming to the Nintendo Switch in 2017 via the game’s official blog. As stated on the blog, the developers were approached by Nintendo secretly to port the title for the Nintendo Switch and it is expected to run at a silky 60 fps.

No further details were given on Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap beyond that its coming Nintendo Switch, the developer also assured readers that the game will be released on other consoles and teased a announcement for the release date. What are you’re thoughts on Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap coming out on the Nintendo Switch?

Sonic Mania announced to release to Nintendo Switch

Following the Nintendo Switch conference, and Nagoshi’s presentation which offered little information on upcoming games, SEGA shared some cool announcements. Puyo Puyo Tetris is coming to PS4 and Switch in the Americas and Europe, and Sonic Mania is confirmed to be releasing to the Nintendo Switch in the spring of 2017, in addition to the already announced PS4, Xbox One and PC platforms. This makes the Switch the only handheld version of the game, in a sense. However, one downside is that there appears to be no collector’s edition of the game for Nintendo Switch owners, unless of course SEGA reveals one in the coming weeks.

More information as we hear it.

Puyo Puyo Tetris coming to Nintendo Switch and PS4, game releasing west

From the Nintendo Switch Presentation, different titles were shown off for the upcoming system, including Super Mario Odyssey, Arms, Splatoon 2, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2. However in the middle of a montage highlighting different titles, Puyo Puyo Tetris was briefly shown as among the titles. Soon enough, SEGA themselves would confirm the game is indeed coming to Switch, titled Puyo Puyo Tetris S. It’s also implied that the game is getting a localization based on it’s presence in the presentation, which would tie to a previous report about Puyo Puyo Tetris trophies appearing in English on PSN.

[UPDATE] It is now officially confirmed Puyo Puyo Tetris is going to be localized for the Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch.

[UPDATE 2] We have a trailer! Check it out after the break!

The Nintendo Switch itself is launching on March 3rd, 2017 for the retail price of $299.99.

SEGA game designer, producer, director, as well as the current Chief Creative Officer of Sega Corporation Toshihiro Nagoshi took the stage at Nintendo’s Switch presentation to… well, say that he was there and that SEGA had Switch on their radar. Nagoshi said: “SEGA sees a tremendous amount of appeal in Nintendo Switch and will intend to be present on the platform, and similarly I as an individual creator sense a new kind of appeal with this game hardware. We will consider new games for Nintendo Switch and will present them soon. This new hardware is taking on a new challenge and has a lot of appealing points and I would like to take advantage of this new concept and I would like to create a new interesting game.”

SEGA and Atlus talk Nintendo Switch support

SEGAATLUSNINTENDOSWITCHWhile we only have one SEGA title announced for the upcoming Nintendo Switch console/handheld hybrid entertainment system, it seems SEGA might have more games up their sleeves. Both SEGA and Atlus talk Nintendo Switch support earlier today.

SEGA had this to say:

“SEGA and Nintendo have been great partners over the years, and we continue to with our support of the Nintendo Switch. We look forward to revealing specific game plans soon, but have nothing further to announce at this time.”

While Atlus, who also announced support a few days ago when the console was first revealed said:

“We’re excited to be supporting the Nintendo Switch and believe the games we publish are a perfect fit for the portable nature of the console.”

While its not surprising seeing SEGA and Atlus talk Nintendo Switch support considering both publishers have supported Nintendo hardware over the past 10 years, Atlus really pused some amazing JRPGs on the Nintendo 3DS handheld. Seems that they are obviously excited to continue that relationship.

What SEGA and Atlus franchises would you like to see on the Nintendo Switch? Does the new console have you excited?

Opinion: What the Nintendo Switch means for SEGA

NX_Partners-1200x794

Nintendo unveiled their latest home console, the Nintendo Switch. Codenamed the Nintendo NX, the Switch was long rumored to be both a home console and a handheld system, and following the debut video the end product appears to be right on with leaks and predictions. Obviously SEGAbits is not a Nintendo site, so we don’t news the debut of new hardware from other companies. But since SEGA is a third-party software developer and they have been confirmed to be supporting the Switch I thought an op-ed was in order. Based on SEGA’s past with Nintendo hardware, what can we expect from the company? How could SEGA’s recent internal changes affect how they approach the Switch?
