SEGA on PC ports: “So many games, so little time! Stay tuned.”

SEGAPCPortsDream
A couple of years ago a ton of SEGA fans started up the #SEGAPCPorts hashtag and petition demanding for SEGA to release more of its games on their platform of choice. It seemed to have worked since we got surprises like “new” title The Typing of the Dead: Overkill and last year we got the fantastic port of Valkyria Chronicles.

Since the last PC port happen last year and we got a new restructure in April, a fan decided to ask SEGA if they where still doing PC ports:

SEGA teams up with GameSessions to offer PC rental and game trials

GameSessions
Seems that SEGA has teamed up with GameSessions, a PC rental and game trial company that allows gamers to ‘try it before you buy it’ motto. Users will be able to try and even rent the game, if the player chooses to buy said game they will receive a Steam code to download the full copy and also transfer their progress.

“Partnering with GameSessions gives us access to a delivery mechanism we’ve not previously had access to and allows players the unique opportunity to try SEGA products before purchasing. The partnership will allow SEGA to reach more players in emerging markets such as Brazil and Mexico, where there are a large number of committed PC gamers and this represents a fantastic opportunity to reach new players and audiences.” – Peter Chan, Business Development Director of Technology and Services at SEGA

Some of the game’s that are now available on the services include games like Football Manager 2015, Company of Heroes 2, Sonic Generations, and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine.

“We are delighted to have SEGA on board with such high quality games. GameSessions’ unique technologies let you start playing sooner, benchmark your hardware against available releases, and then let you purchase instantly whilst keeping your saved progress right through to receiving the final Steam copy. Our experience is that quality content like SEGA’s will encourage many trials and subsequently, monetize strongly.” – Ed French, GameSessions CEO

Grandia II HD hits PC this year, new screenshots revealed

GrandiaIIHD
We announced prior that Grandia II HD was getting a new PC port based on the Dreamcast version (best version) of the game. Now we know that publisher GungHo Online Entertainment plans to release Grandia II HD sometime this year via  GOG and also on Steam.

The HD version will have updated graphics for HD displays, include Japanese voice acting (along with English dub), controller support and a new, harder difficulty mode. Grandia II came out on the Dreamcast in 2000 and was considered one of the best RPGs released on the console. A few years later it got a PS2 and PC port, but both these ports where noted for being inferior to the Dreamcast version. Glad that the world (outside of Dreamcast owners) will get to re-experience Grandia II the way it was mean’t to be enjoyed.

Here is what the game will look like:

Round Table: How much did you pledge to Shenmue 3?

shenmue3rt

It is hard to grasp that it has been over 14 years since Shenmue 2 came out and left us all with that cliffhanger in the end of the game. There has been a strong fan reaction for a third installment and Yu Suzuki stood at Playstation’s E3 stage to finally give fans what they have been asking for. Ys NET launched their Kickstarter campaign which broke funding records, cementing that fans are willing to give their hard earn cash in order to see a third installment of their favorite franchise. In this week’s Round Table we talk about how much we funded and why. You can let us know how much you funded in the comments below.

Review: Tembo the Badass Elephant (PC)

Temboreview

SEGA and Game Freak Inc (Pokemon series, Pulseman) partner up once more to bring us a brand new platformer starring Tembo the Badass Elephant. I have been itching to get my hands on this game since SEGA first showed it earlier this year and now that I have beaten it was all my excitement worth it? Is Tembo the Badass Elephant a good enough game to earn the honor of having ‘badass’ in its title?

Shenmue Gaiden: A fan made visual novel gets announced

Shenmue Gaiden 1

Two Shenmue fanatics (Shensun and Esppiral from Shenmue Dojo) have been working together for a greater part of a year on the fan creation of Shenmue Gaiden, a non-canon Shenmue visual novel. This is the sequel to a fan project that was released a year ago called ‘Shenmue X chapter 1, but the creator suggest this project will be better and by the looks of the promotional artwork he might be on to something.

It is expected for the visual novel to have a demo this year with a release sometime in 2016, the game will have two plot stories that deal with Ryo and Shenhua reaching their destination after their long walk in the forest and a young girl who asks them for help. To read more about the plot and see other in-game screenshots, hit the jump or click here.

[update] SEA Phantasy Online 2 no longer IP blocking foreigners

Phantasy-Star-Online-2-2
While SEGA announced that it was bringing the English version of Phantasy Star Online 2 way back in 2012, it obviously didn’t come. Last year PlayPark, a South East Asian company announced it was releasing Phantasy Star Online 2 in that region and in English. The issue? Well, they where IP blocking any foreign players that tried to play the game.

This continued and it was just announced that they have dropped IP blocks. That means if you want to just download and play Phantasy Online 2 without doing all the English patching! You can just head here, register and download. Please be warned that the SEA server is behind one years worth of content compared to the Japanese servers.

[Update] It seems that they are starting to block users once again. If you want to play you can always use the PSO2 Tweaker and player on the Japanese servers, which is the best version of the game. [/update]

Shenmue 3 Kickstarter Ends At $6,333,295, 69,320 Backers

shenmue 3

The Shenmue 3 Kickstarter campaign has officially ended, earning a total amount of $6,333,295 with 69,320 backers.

Fourteen years after Shenmue II was released, and following two failed attempts at reviving the franchise (Shenmue Online and Shenmue Gai), Yu Suzuki was welcomed to Sony’s E3 2015 stage to officially announce the beginning of the Kickstarter campaign for Shenmue 3. Breaking the Guinness World Record for the fastest video game to reach $1 million through crowdfunding in one hour and 42 minutes (as well as initially crashing Kickstarter’s site), Shenmue 3 continued to break records by being the second fastest Kickstarter campaign in all categories to raise over $1 million. Less than nine hours later, Shenmue 3 continued to drop jaws around the world when it reached $2 million, its 100% funding goal. Since the announcement, the money has continued to flow in, raising almost $1 million more on its last campaign day.

The game has also become the most funded video game in Kickstarter History, a record previously held by Bloodstained, the third most funded Kickstarter campaign in the “Games” category, and, most impressively, the sixth most funded Kickstarter project of all time.

The Kickstarter campaign should be considered a massive success, and now we can all rest (if only for a little bit), and await a steady flow of Shenmue 3 news until December of 2017!

Fan launches demo for his Phantasy Star Online Remaster project

If you had a Dreamcast growing up, you probably had a copy of Phantasy Star Online somewhere. Even you, the guy that bought it because it had an exclusive demo of Sonic Adventure 2 in the case. If you spent hundreds of hours playing the game online, then you will be happy to know that Youtube/Reddit user Glader has been working on a remake project for the original Phantasy Star Online game.

You can click here to check out the demo he has launched, above video talks about the project. It seems that the project is very early in development, right now its just a proof of concept showing off the core features. According to the video, it is being developed on Unity 5. Very interesting project, what do you guys think?

New Shenmue III trailer, less than 72 hours left in the campaign!

Last night, presumably to feed off of the hype surrounding the end of Shenmue III‘s Kickstarter campaign, YS Net released a short clip of very early footage of a Shenmue III cutscene running on Unreal Engine 4.

Rather than new content, it seems Yu Suzuki was content with recreating another Shenmue II scene. The game does look quite brilliant in Unreal Engine 4, and can only get better as development continues! Check out the original Shenmue II scene here.

What do you think of the new clip, and how much will it push the Kickstarter in these final hours? Sound off in the comments below.

Phantasy Star Online 2’s new update to feature crossover with BlazeBlue

If not having Phantasy Star Online 2 released in the west made you bitter before, its going to make you even more bitter now. Especially if you’re a BlazeBlue fan because BlazeBlue is joining the Phantasy Star Online 2 universe this upcoming August.

So what is this collaboration going to have? There is going to be new scratch items, which include costumes to make your avatar look like characters from the BlazeBlue universe. Each character has a male and female variant of their costume.

BlazeBlue characters represented in the update:

Each character will have their respective iconic weapons unlockable in Phantasy Star Online 2, which are shown in the trailer above. This update is being called ‘Phantasy Star Online 2: Darkness Shrouded Domain‘ and will continue the story in the game as well as add this big crossover. Hey SEGA West, I’d play the crap out of this game if you brought it over. Just sayin’!

New Total War: WARHAMMER trailer introduces the Demigryphs

Demigryphs are part lion, part eagle mounts that are used for knights or other high ranking members of the Empire. In this trailer Creative Assembly shows off the base model for the Demigryphs and explains their role in the Warhammer Fantasy universe.

The Demigryphs are known for their strength, massively powerful beaks and viciously sharp claws that cut through armor like butter. Much like everything Warhammer, even Demigryphs have their own lore. One of the biggest Demigryphs ever recorded (in this fictional history) was called Reaper who was the mount of Thedore Bruckner, now I wonder if we will be seeing Reaper in this upcoming game? Should be interesting seeing more about the game, considering how dense the Warhammer universe is.

SEGA announces Phantasy Star Online 2 anime TV show

phantasyStaronline2animation

During a event in Okinaway on Sunday, SEGA announced that its 2012 Free-To-Play online RPG Phantasy Star Online 2 will be getting a television anime adaption. The anime, being called Phantasy Star Online 2 The Animation, will have a completely new storyline and take place on Earth in the near future.

During the event SEGA also revealed that Phantasy Star Online 2 has had over 3.5 million registered users. Sadly the only thing we know is that it will be coming out sometime in 2016. Now if we can get a release of the game over here in America and Europe, that’d be great!

Yu Suzuki’s Twitter Q&A Part 2: Shenmue 3 in-game footage won’t be shown until 2017

YuTwitter2
Last time Yu Suzuki was answering fan questions on twitter, I searched his twitter to find all the questions and answers to give them to you. This time, someone on Shenmue Dojo beat me to it. So you can check out the answers questions here or hit the jump for the complete transcript.

Some of the interesting bits includes a sketch of Akira in  High School from the cancelled Virtua Fighter RPG, Saying that we won’t see in-game footage of Shenmue 3 until 2017, and even confirmed that the game will be based on reality, unlike what that Shenmue Online trailer lead us to believe.

Company of Heroes 2’s stand alone expansion ‘The British Forces’ comes out September 3rd

Not only did SEGA announce that ‘The British Forces‘ was coming out on September 3rd, it also announced it would come with a ‘major design upgrade’ for the whole Company of Heroes 2 multiplayer. The upgrade will balance out the game’s five factions and further improve animation and graphics.

As for The British Forces, you won’t need a to own a copy of Company of Heroes 2 to play it and if you get The British Forces only, you’ll still be able to access the multiplayer content available in Company of Heroes 2. The stand alone expansion is set to introduce players to 15 new units, 6 new commanders with unique abilities and 8 whole new multiplayer maps.

The stand alone expansion will retail for $12.99, if you pre-order it now on Steam you get 10% off. If you have any other Company of Heroes games in your library you get a additional 10% off (making it 20% off). Pretty good deal for long time fans and a cheap entry point for new comers that want to get into the multiplayer portion of Company of Heroes 2.
