The Twitch E3 2017 Pre Pre Show had Aaron Webber on as a guest to preview what Sonic Forces and Sonic Mania content will be playable at SEGA’s booth. The segment, which can be seen in full here, showed off the previously unseen Sonic Mania Green Hill Zone Act 2 boss which turned out to be Dr. Eggman’s giant end boss mech from Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Meanwhile, Sonic Forces showed off the Classic Sonic Green Hill Zone boss which turned out to be modern Eggman swinging a giant saw blade before bringing out the Egg Dragoon, previously seen in Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Generations.
Also showcased was a modern Sonic Sonic Forces stage. Worth noting, the Sonic Forces world map classifies the stages as “Sonic Stage”, “Classic Stage” and “Avatar Stage”. Also, during the classic Sonic boss battle in Sonic Forces, modern Eggman refers to classic Sonic as being from another dimension. Uh-oh, is Iizuka messing with canon again?
SEGA has revealed another returning classic Sonic stage to appear in Sonic Mania, Sonic the Hedgehog 2‘s Chemical Plant Zone. Often cited by fans as the favorite stage in their favorite game of the series, Chemical Plant is not new to modern gaming as 2011’s Sonic Generations featured the zone in the console version of the game. The Sonic Mania remix features new music from Tee Lopes and several new gimmicks including bouncy goopy rivers, sticky walls and teleporting bubbles. SEGA has provided us with screenshots and additional footage which you can see after the break.
Sonic Mania is now available for digital preorder and is set to release on August 15th for Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

So give this episode a gander and let us know what your thoughts on the Sonic Mania price and release date are in the comments below. Sonic Mania hits digital store shelves on August 15, 2017 for only $19.99 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

A ton of Sonic Mania news hit yesterday, and following the bevy of information we’ve assembled the released press screenshots as well as a selection of screenshots taken from a high resolution version of the pre-order trailer. Some interesting images include new classic Eggman art, a look at Stardust Speedway and of course a tease of what we assume are the fully animated in-game cutscenes.
SEGA has recently released a brand new trailer for Sonic Mania for pre-order as the footage showcasing unique sketch animation by Tyson Hesse, who has worked on Sonic Mega Drive comic, which strikingly resembles Sonic CD‘s opening and the leak that was revealed a few months ago. The video also revealed a new level and boss fights.
Stardust Speedway Past from Sonic CD is making a comeback with new level features with plant like robots and vines, a miniboss in Flying Battery Zone, and a boss fight with Heavy Gunner in action.
Sonic Mania is now available for digital preorder and is set to release on August 15th for Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Hit the jump for screenshots of the new levels from the trailer.
Steam has just listed the pre-order price for Sonic Mania, and it appears to be much in line with what fans expected. The game will sell digitally, on Steam for PC, at $19.99 with a pre-purchase incentive price of $17.99. One would assume that this price will carry over to the PS4, Xbox One and Switch versions.
The Sonic Mania Collector’s Edition, available on Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC, is currently priced at around $60 with discounts and Amazon Prime pre-order incentives applied. Minus the price of the game, this would place the “SEGA Genesis” style Collector’s Box, 12″ Classic Sonic Statue featuring SEGA Genesis Base, Metallic Collector’s Card and SEGA Cartridge Cast with Golden Ring at around $40 total. Not bad when you consider the statue alone would likely retail for more than $40.
Update: It was pointed out on Twitter that Sonic Mania‘s release date has been confirmed to be August 15, as previously revealed. The date appears when checking out.
What are your thoughts on the price? Which platform do you plan to play on?
According to several Steam users in select parts of the world, a revised Sonic Mania trailer has appeared listing August 15 as the game’s release date. While the US store has not shown anything new, the European and some South American Steam Stores show the date. The date would mean we have two and a half months to wait before the game releases, and it also means the game would not make the end of Sonic’s 25th anniversary on June 23. We’ll share more as he hear it!
Sonic Mania is a game that embraces old school aesthetics, so it is fitting that fellow SEGA and Sonic fan Ineedmorcowbell created a Sonic Mania skin for the old school program Winamp. Initially released in 1997, Winamp is a freemium media player for Windows, Android, and macOS. If you had a computer between 1997 and now, chances are you downloaded this program and still have it on your machine. What Ineedmorcowbell’s skin does is turn the entire player into Studiopolis Zone.
Ineedmorcowbell has this to say about the project:
After watching game play of Sonic Mania’s Studiopolis Zone, and seeing the Hornet Van. I felt like it needed to dance! This whole project was built around getting that Van to dance! From there, I designed how all the windows and standard features would be reskinned. There is all kinds of animations like the clouds moving, or lights glowing, to the projector playing different animations that react to the music.
All the sprites for this skin have been redrawn by myself! I used the debut, and various game play videos to collect the sprites to use, then redrew them in a much lower resolution. Similar to the original Genesis games. To produce a much crisper look then just using them straight from the videos. The only things that I didn’t redraw were some of the animations for the projector that use the developer logos and intro for the game. Christian Whitehead was redrawn because the original design was very seizure inducing. The Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles Head was done in illustrator.
I spent a lot of time and work really hard on this, so let me know what you think!
Hold the presses, Sonic Forces has just showed off extended classic gameplay of Green Hill Zone! Join George and Barry as we discuss what we think of Sonic Force‘s graphical engine, our thoughts on Green Hill Zone returning (once again), the new Sonic Forces‘ music, and game game featuring Sonic Mania‘s drop dash? Like always let us know what your thoughts on Sonic Forces re-using Green Hill Zone, any theories you might have about the game and your overall thoughts on the new Sonic Forces music track being used for Green Hill Zone.
