Welcome to the first entry of Sonic Stories! I’m one of those fans who was introduced to SEGA by way of Sonic the Hedgehog. Specifically the 1991 original classic. As such, despite now being a fan of many different SEGA franchises, it always comes back to Sonic the Hedgehog. To kick off this series, I wanted to share how I got into the franchise, my favorite moments as a fan as well as open up the article series to other SEGAbits readers and writers.

Yakuza & Phantasy Star developers love Heavy Rain

Sony’s big budget story driven game gets love from SEGA’s Masayoshi Yokoyama (Yakuza 4) and Satoshi Sakai (Phantasy Star series), who confess that it is their favorite game released last year. Not only that, Sakai adds that he also enjoyed Call of Duty: Black Ops and Monster Hunter Portable 3rd.

Atsushi Inaba (from Platinum Games) said his favorite game last year was Mario Galaxy 2. I always keep on forgetting that the game came out last year. Just seems like it’s older!

The latest indie release for the… SEGA Genesis?! That’s right! We’re not talking indie Dreamcast, we’re going way back to SEGA’s 16-bit wonder! Let’s unbox and boot up the Pier Solar Reprint Edition.

After the video, make sure to check out the developers website and order yourself a copy. How often do you get a new Genesis or Mega Drive game? And it’s only $45. That’s cheaper than a Genesis game bought back in the 1990’s.

SEGA Tunes Vol.3 “End of the Millennium”

The long, long struggle of ancient times finally ended…
The victor sacrificed the vanquished to the heavens.
Four bells tolled. Four torches were lit.
And the world continued for thousands of years…

Phantasy Star: End of the Millennium is an epic journey of Self Discovery and finding purpose in life and most importantly, learning the value of love and friendship. Arguably one of the most memorable games from the Genesis in terms of Graphics and Gameplay was your typical JRPG, featuring the usual dungeons and the old school 2D top down camera angle. What elevated the game to the next level was the deep and fleshed out story, complete with the finest character development in video game history.

This tale of epic proportions was paired with some classic tunes that, nearly 2 decades later, fans fondly remember and remix. While there literary are thousands of remixes and arrangements out there, we share some of our favorites with you today.

Man gets Kazuma Kiryu’s back tattoo to win SEGA competition

One of the most iconic things about the Yakuza series is Kazuma’s awesome back tattoo. Well, last year when Yakuza 3 was released, SEGA had a competition. What did you have to do to win? Get a full back tattoo just like Kazuma’s. Did someone win? Yes…

The winner was Fari Salievsk, a 46-year-old MMA trainer from Australia. The tattoo took six months to complete, with sessions lasting up to four hours in three week intervals.

“Getting a tatt is making a statement that is with you for life so I do recommend it but it’s not something you rush in to,” – Fari Salievsk

The tattoo was paid for by SEGA and ended up costing around $9,000, feels good getting free ink. Mr. Salievsk did change one thing on the tattoo, the bottom writing was changed from Japanese to Korean. He said “personalized his kanji in place of the original.” I don’t think he knows what kanji is….

Thor: God of Thunder – HD version trailer

The Wii and DS versions of Thor have gotten a lot of positive press when they were shown a few days ago at a press event. The HD versions of the game? Not so much.

If you look at the trailer, it’s not hard to see why. The graphics look like an average Wii game, the gameplay seems a bit repetitive… this is just in a trailer. We will see if the team pulls off some tricks in the full retail version.

Captain America: Super Solider – HD version trailer

The trailer is actually called ‘next gen’, but let’s be honest, we have been in the ‘PS3 and 360’ generation for 4-5 years! We need to stop calling it next gen.

The trailer is pretty alright, SEGA has always been good at cutting together a Marvel trailer and selling the game to gamers. Have their titles been good? No, but we are willing to give it a chance, even if the trailer already shows a slowed down framerate.

SEGA Sequel Saturdays: Sonic 4 Episode 2

Episode 9 time, ladies and gentlemen. Back when SEGA announced that a return to 2D Sonic was being developed, (then code-named Project Needlemouse,) there was a surge of excitement throughout the industry and the fanbase. After so many years, and after a series of hit-or-miss 3D Sonic games, SonicTeam was finally about to deliver us a modern-day console 2D Sonic game. At the time, my opinion was that that SEGA absolutely could not afford to wuss out with the name: if they were really going to do this, I said, there was no point without calling it Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Sure enough, Project Needlemouse did become Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and well…read on.

Thor & Captain America games to support 3D

Thor & Captain America video games will be in 3D, SEGA confirmed at their latest press event. The versions of the game that will come in 3D are the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Nintendo 3DS.
This means that the Wii and DS versions of the game will stay in ‘2D’, since they are not capable of producing a 3D image. SEGA also released a new batch of screenshots, hit the jump to view those.

Yakuza keeping looters at bay in Japan?

Here in America, if someone farts too loud everyone begins to loot their local Wal-Mart. In Japan, after a huge Earthquake and Tsunami, it seems that crime and looting is rather low. Why is that?

“In times of crisis, there are not Yakuza and civilians or foreigners. There are only human beings and we should help each other.”- Yakuza Boss

It seems major yakuza familes have squads that are patrolling the streets, just like police would do says Slate. Good to know that even people that are considered criminals can realize that you should help your neighbors when they are in need. Kazuma Kiryu would be proud!
