SEGA comes to San Diego Comic Con! (Kinda-Sorta)

SEGA has a massive stable of iconic characters. From the normal (Ryo Hazuki) to the bizarre (ToeJam and Earl) and everything in-between. But what about the characters you never see? They’re just as iconic, yet they have never had a face to put to the voice. In this week’s five, we will be shining the spotlight on the best unseen SEGA characters. The characters who can define a game without the need for a visit to SEGA’s character design department.

SEGA posted new boxart and screens on the Playstation Blog for us to enjoy. Like usually a ton of fans asked SEGA questions about unconfirmed aspects of House of the Dead Overkill Extended Cut. One of the questions is if the game will have online.
“Wish I could answer that now, but right now, we just have to wait and see. :)” – David Bruno, Public Relations Manager, Sega of America
Even though it isn’t a yes, don’t be shocked if you will be able to team up with someone on PSN and shoot down mutant bastards online.

If you are like me, you probably aren’t very good at the hostess bits in the Yakuza games. Guess what? SEGA is giving you a chance to fail at attracting hostess in real life.
SEGA is teaming with Naimaga to give 30 fans one-on-one time with Erika Mizushima and Yuria Hayashida, two hostess from the game. The winners will be able to dine for 45 minutes with the girls.
Yes, SEGA will be paying for the beer and all you can eat edomame.
If you are from Japan and you think you have a chance. Enter here. Bottom has their in-game models.

SEGA has released the box art and a ton of screenshots for the Playstation 3 port of House of the Dead Overkill, being billed as the ‘extended cut’. So what is in the extended cut?
List of PS3 exclusive features:
The recently released issue of Japanese magazine Famitsu spills the beans on two hotly anticipated classic Sonic zones making their return: Sonic 2’s Chemical Plant and Sonic CD’s Stardust Speedway. The first is a full blown classic and modern stage, featuring the iconic yellow and blue paths and copper colored factories of Chemical Plant. Stardust Speedway will be the location for Sonic’s race, and possible battle, with the recently revealed rival Metal Sonic. The magazine also shows what appear to be the 3DS special stages, taken from Sonic Heroes.
After the break, drool over the scans!
A new trailer for Nagoshi’s ‘Binary Domain’ has appeared. The trailer which has no gameplay sheds a bit more light on the games storyline and shows a few new bosses and characters. It all looks pretty cool; I’m definitely getting a bit of a Yakuza vibe in the way the characters look and move. The VA’s are pretty hit and miss though but overall I liked the trailer.
Binary Domain will release on the Xbox360 and PS3 in 2012.
SEGA has picked Hong Soo Ah, a Korean model to promote their popular MLB Manager Online web game. A representative said:
“When men and women of all ages think about baseball, the number one celebrity to come to mind is Hong Soo Ah. We chose her as the model because we believed her to suit the position considering the love she receives for her unique passion for the sport of baseball.”
This deal is obviously for Korea, since I doubt Americans know who she is, and I doubt many would think of a small Asian girl when they think of baseball. No, we think about hot dogs and steroids.

Randy Pitchford has been talking to PC Gamer about Aliens: Colonial Marines this month. He talks about what the team is trying to accomplish with the upcoming title. Two things he says the team is tring to create are sections called “Last Stands” and “Gauntlets”. Names they are using to describe intense parts of the game.
“We’ve come up with language to define some of the tools we use for pacing. Gauntlet Run: this is about getting from point A to point B and everthing’s going to be thrown in your way around you.”
“Last Stand: this is when you’re in a defined area and we’re going to be pouring in aliens from all directions. That’s a pacing moment that can feel sometimes like Left 4 Dead or some of those great moments fromHalf-Life 2 where you’re setting a turret here and setting a turret there. These are really interesting wheen you add co-op into the mix.” – Randy Pitchford
Sounds like it’s going to be a changing experience. The thing I kind of disliked about Left 4 Dead was that it was a one trick pony. It seemed like one mode that was remixed a ton of times. This seems like it’s going to have a bit of everything. Hopefully it’s done right.

The little metal manace returns! Sonic the Hedgehog’s Facebook page has just revealed the CG render for Metal Sonic as he will appear in Sonic Generations. What’s special about this iteration of Sonic’s doppelganger is that unlike recent video game appearances of Metal, this version is based on the classic Sonic CD design. Shorter limbs, bigger head, round eyes and pure evil. I love it! Now my fingers are crossed for a Sonic CD stage in which you battle Metal. Based on the design, I’d say we’re getting one.

Finally, some Sega news! It’s been a slow week.
PS Plus subscribers can pick up the arcade version of Golden Axe for free*. The downloadable title has difficulty options, screen settings and of course, trophies. Expect it to hit regular PSN stores in about a month or so.
*= You are paying for the Plus service so it’s not technically free.
Last week on Jeopardy it was Kids Week, so appropriately clues catered to the younger crowd. Despite being twice their age, many of the questions went over my head and were successfully answered by the competing grade schoolers. Thankfully, I was sure to get one question right and that one involved a popular blue hedgehog. On the Friday, July 8th episode, in the category Cute & Cuddly the $800 clue was: “Tails is a big-eyed friend of this ever-popular hedgehog”. The eventual champion Tony correctly answered “Sonic” in the form of a question. Thank goodness he didn’t screw up and say Shadow or Silver. Way to go, Tony! Now use that prize money to pre-order Sonic Generations, and pick up Jeopardy! for the SEGA Genesis while you’re at it.
Rise of Nightmares: It’s a pretty creepy title. It makes sense in the context of the game, the nightmares are rising and it is up to you to keep them down and defeat them.
STAMACSTA: What?!
According to the Australian Classification Board, a game developed by SEGA’s CS3 team containing “strong horror violence, blood and gore” will be released in Australia. This describes Rise of Nightmares to a T, however the title does not match up. In the classification, this game is titled “STAMACSTA”. Either SEGA’s CS3 team are developing two gory games and we have yet to hear of this other one, or much more likely STAMACSTA is Australia’s title for Rise of Nightmares. Fingers crossed that a classification board employee accidentally let his cat walk on the keyboard rather than this being true. It’s quote an awful title. “Stam-acts-ta”?
After the break, check out the classification information.
