SEGA cancels “Super Game” while continuing to commit to previously announced legacy sequels

After years of speculation and zero concrete reveals, SEGA has officially pulled the plug on its mysterious “Super Game” initiative. Originally announced in 2021, SEGA described the project as a major next-generation effort reportedly backed by a huge $882 million budget. At the time, many assumed “Super Game” referred to one massive AAA release. As the years went on, SEGA later clarified that the name actually represented several large-scale projects and long-term business plans rather than a single title.

Now, according to SEGA’s latest earnings report, the company has quietly ended the initiative altogether. Buried within the report’s Games as a Service review section is a single line confirming the decision: “Decided to cancel Super Game.” SEGA also stated that no additional financial losses were recorded from the cancellation during Q3 of Fiscal Year 2026. That’s all the company had to say on the matter, leaving fans to wonder whether any of the ideas tied to the project evolved into other upcoming releases or were scrapped entirely.

Even with “Super Game” gone, SEGA’s release roadmap still looks stacked with returning franchises and major new projects. The company’s current lineup includes:

  • Stranger Than Heaven
  • Persona 4 Revival
  • Total War: Warhammer 40,000
  • Total War: Medieval III
  • A new Virtua Fighter project
  • Crazy Taxi
  • Golden Axe
  • Jet Set Radio
  • Streets of Rage
  • An Alien: Isolation sequel

Most of these titles still lack official release dates, but SEGA says it plans to release four games based on its established IPs during Fiscal Year 2027. So while the “Super Game” name may be heading to the graveyard of forgotten SEGA initiatives, the company clearly isn’t slowing down when it comes to reviving classic franchises. Whether any of these upcoming titles were once connected to the ambitious project remains a mystery SEGA may never fully explain.

Now we won’t ever learn what Super Game was all about – was it some crazy Fortnite-ish action/shooter or Shenmue-like big open world, connecting other SEGA games, and including virtual arcades packed with legacy games? Hard to tell. Maybe it’s better not to know. Anyway, important is that works on the roster of interesting games continues.

For this financial year, it looks like Stranger Than Heaven, Persona 4 Revival, Total War Warhammer and some kind of Sonic are coming.

Yeah. At least for now the retro ip’s there keen to revive are still in the works. I can just only hope and pray that at least crazy taxi and jet set radio aren’t developed just to be service games only ala suicide squad kill the justice league, That would be awful. And we all know how well that game turned out….

No surprise here. They were talking nonsense, without anything concrete.

What about a remake of Skies of Arcadia (Eternal Arcadia in Japan)? I would like play it again in my PS5.

    Anyone knows anything?

    Thank you.

I liked the idea of SEGA thinking big, but ‘Super Game” just felt like corporate talk that was setting too high of expectations on the teams that were working on it. The next big thing usually happens organically. Ironically, one expectation would be the creation of Sonic. But usually board6 creations don’t work out that well. As far as the other games, I have 100% in Virtua Fighter to be a 10/10. I’m cautiously optimistic about Jet Set and Crazy Taxi. I’m very suspicious of the quality and approach of Golden Axe and Streets of Rage though. I feel like those two would probably end up being mid as 3D games. I don’t know how you could top Streets of Rage 4. Lizard Cube would actually be great at making a 2D Golden Axe.

My guess? A new Phantasy Star game as a service.

I think we might never get another entry considering the hole they have dug for themselves.

Eh, Never say never! But yeah. It’s been awhile since the last phantasy star huh? I just wish sega would find a way to rerelease there classic arcade titles for modern platforms outside of just cherry picking select titles for like a dragon. Not that I mind those games being in like a dragon mind you. As a matter of fact, They really enhance my enjoyment of those games.

Why is it getting cancelled? So another 800M down the drain? That’s even more of a waste than what Hyenas was which supposed to be like SEGA’s big FPS which also got cancelled. Someone was also saying not even the Dreamcast cost that much to develop, manufacture for launch and advertise at 500M in 1998/1999 money, and they’ve just ended an 800M project just like that.
