Aaron Webber: Say My Name, Say My Name

To thank those who bought multiple versions of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1, Ken Balough (Digital Brand Manager, Sonic 4) and Aaron Webber (Community Manager, Sonic 4) issued a little thank you video. As a nice surprise, they revealed that the public thanking would not be limited to those who bought three or more versions of the game. Instead, they would thank every single person who put their name into True Blue initiative. At 1:35 you’ll see and hear Aaron Webber saying my name as he looks deeply into the camera. No doubt hoping that I heard his thanks. Well Aaron, your thanks has been heard. And in return I say: thank you too!

McDonald’s Collectibles book details the Sonic 3 Happy Meal

So I found a book lying in the loft about McDonald’s Collectibles and found a couple pages in there about the Sonic set of toys made in 1994 to promote Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and there is a few interesting bits of info in it along with scans. The Sega-Vision… in 1977!?

Back in 2009 I wrote an article at SEGA Memories about a little known piece of hardware from SEGA known as the Sega-Vision. Patented in 1977, the Sega-Vision was a big screen projection TV sold to consumers. Since writing the article, a reader named Chris shared something I had never seen before: a TV commercial for the Sega-vision! So let us revisit this unique article covering an interesting moment in SEGA’s past, and take a look at the commercial, hosted by LA Dodger Steve Garvey! I wonder if Steve still has a Sega-Vision?

Classic SEGA Magazine Corner: EGM May 1991

Continuing an article series started by SEGAbits writer MadeManG74, I present another classic SEGA magazine: Electronic Gaming Monthly Number 22, released May 1991. SEGA and Sonic fans of course recognize May ’91 as the month before Sonic the Hedgehog hit stores. American magazine EGM joined the hype wagon and gave Sonic his own cover and a two page preview spread. Check out the article that was, most likely, the first real preview many had seen of the now classic SEGA series!

The GagaMan Plays Through Retro SEGA Oddities

The GagaMan, creator for SEGA Memories and contributor to the SEGA Junkyard blogs, recently uploaded a series of game playthroughs* to his YouTube channel. Included in the playthroughs thus far are some pretty crazy SEGA games of the past including the SEGA CD’s Panic! (aka Switch) in two parts, the AM2 arcade game Dynamite Dux and Looney Tunes Desert Demolition for the Mega Drive. The videos are full length, no 10 minute increments here, and are fileld to the brim with the GagaMan’s usual comments. Check ’em out!

10″ Sonic and the Sonic PVC 6-pack!

As 2010 comes to an end, so too does a great year for Sonic toys! This year we saw toymaker Jazwares make a huge step up in quality and number of new figures. Meanwhile, First 4 Figures covered the collectible side of things with an awesome Super Sonic statue and a great collection of PVC figures. Today I thought I’d highlight two recent acquisitions: Jazware’s 10″ Sonic and First 4 Figures PVC 6-pack!

Kingdom Conquest released for iOS devices, it’s free!

A few months back we brought you some early info on SEGA’s new combination town strategy game and 3-D dungeon crawler Kingdom Conquest. Well today, that game is available to download for FREE via the iTunes app store and can be played on any iOS device. Learn more about the game here, and if you own an iOS device download it NOW! It’s free, it’s a new IP and thus far from what I’ve played it’s pretty cool!

The Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love Premium Pack!

I’m eight months late to the party, but who cares. I’m the first to feature it at SEGAbits!

While SEGA’s Sakura Taisen franchise is insanely popular in Japan, having a number of main series games and spin-offs spanning the Saturn era through to the Dreamcast and Playstation 2, it has had little presence in English speaking regions. The fifth game in the series, Sakura Taisen V: Farewell, My Love, hit the Japanese PS2 in 2005. It wasn’t until 5 years later that the game received a very unexpected English language version. The PS2 received a handsome special edition box (America only from what I can tell) while the Wii received a standard version (which hit both America and Europe). While the game released back in March, it wasn’t until this weekend that I got around to picking up a copy for $30 at GameStop, marked down $10.

Review: Sonic Free Riders

As the last of his games hit shelves, so ends a big year for Sonic. 2010 brought with it some hotly anticipated Sonic titles: The SEGA Superstars returned for All-Star Racing, 2D Sonic returned to consoles and 3D Sonic has cleaned up his act. Meanwhile, off in the corner sat Sonic Free Riders.

Free Riders, the third game in the Sonic Riders series, made ripples (not waves) in the SEGA community when it was announced to be a launch title for Microsoft’s Kinect. The series itself had earned little respect in the past, and coupled with a new piece of hardware, enthusiasm for the game was mixed. But now the Kinect is here, the game is out. No more speculating, it’s reviewin’ time!

Sonic Adventure Vanquish Remix

Earlier this week I picked up Vanquish in Kmart’s awesome sale, and I am totally in love with the game. The opening cinematic is crazy, brutal, epic and reminded me of another great SEGA game. So, using the powers of YouTube and iMovie I’ve mashed up two intros into one. Take note that this may be a tiny spoiler to those who haven’t seen the first few minutes of Vanquish and the game is rated M for Muthaf*ckin’ Mayhem. Enjoy!

If you haven’t picked up this modern day classic yet, do so now! The sale is still going on, though the game is out of stock online. So run to your local Kmart and get the game.

Sonic Colors Cutscene Featuring the NEW Voices

Courtesy of Sonic Wrecks, Sonic Stadium and Sonic Retro comes the first publicly shown video of a Sonic Colors cutscene complete with dialogue! Personally, I think it’s an all around improvement over the past couple of games. Definitely beats out Heroes and ’06, and is a bit better than Unleashed despite the lack of HD visuals. Tails sounds like a boy once again, and Sonic is… different. But not worse! I’ll have to see more of the game before making a concrete decision. Bonus points for Sonic performing the Moonwalk.
