Review: 3D Thunder Blade (Nintendo 3DS)

3dthunderbladereview

The final arcade title in wave two of SEGA’s 3D Classics line of games releases this Thursday, and boy is it a special one! While Thunder Blade is not SEGA’s most famous 80s arcade title, eclipsed by greats like OutRun, Space Harrier, and Hang-On, it certainly deserves a spot with the big boys. Perhaps the general public’s neglect of Thunder Blade stems from the game’s home console releases. While other SEGA arcade classics have seen near perfect home ports, Thunder Blade never truly saw a worthy release that stacked up with the arcade original. But now, nearly 30 years later, SEGA and M2 just may have done the original justice with their latest SEGA 3D Classic release. How did they do in porting this 1987 classic? Read on!

SEGA’s Okunari says they are open to do more 3D Classics

3DClassicsPhysical
SEGA has just announced they added additional titles to their ‘Wave 2’ of 3D Classics headed to the 3DS. Those titles where 3D Streets of Rage 2, 3D Gunstar Heroes and of course 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2. So is SEGA planning a ‘Third Wave’ of 3D Classics after these release?

SEGA’s Yosuke Okunari spoke to Famitsu about that and here is his response:

These three titles were put out for download overseas simply as an extension [to the existing series]. This really is the end for the second wave [of Sega 3D Classics]. Of course we want to consider the development of a third wave based on the response to this second wave, but we have no plans at this point in time. We’ll look at the big picture, that is, we’ll look at the sales trends of the physical release of the Sega 3D Classics line that went on sale last year [in Japan] as well as how the upcoming three titles perform in the global market. We’re happy to do this indefinitely if sales are good.

It pretty much seems that these latest three Genesis/Mega Drive added to Wave 2 is to test, see how they do globally and if they do well they could continue the series. I’m personally loving these re-releases, what about you guys?

Atlus has now released their Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker 3DS theme in the North American e-Shop and is available to purchase for only .99 cents.

Its nice to see some companies aren’t scared of releasing their Japanese 3DS themes in America. I wonder when SEGA will release those awesome SEGA console 3DS themes?

SEGA’s Stella Glow stream shows an extensive preview of the game

If you have been living under a rock and missed the news that SEGA was going to publish Imageepoch’s 3DS SRPG Stella Glow, now you know. Another good piece of news is that the game is also coming to the west thanks to Atlus later this year.

Above is a Japanese live stream that shows off what you can expect form the game when it comes out. Including a look at the artistic graphics, variety of places to visit and much more. Also, lots of anime babes (if that is your thing).

So what do you guys think about this game? Worth your time?

First Look at 3D Streets of Rage 2 Gameplay

Recently SEGA and M2 announced that they would be continuing their incredible range of 3D remakes for the Nintendo 3DS. In the next wave of titles comes three of the most beloved SEGA Megadrive/Genesis titles; 3D Streets of Rage 2, 3D Sonic 2 and 3D Gunstar Heroes.

Today SEGA uploaded the first look at 2D Streets of Rage 2 or as it was known in Japan ‘Bare Knuckle 2.’ Check it out above!

3D Streets of Rage 2 screenshots tell you to trust your fists

3Dstreetsofrage1

If you missed the announcement, SEGA is set to add three more titles to their wave 2 of their 3D Classics on the 3DS. We already got great titles like 3D Fantasy Zone, 3D Outrun and just last week we got 3D Fantasy Zone II. Now we are set to get Genesis/Mega Drive hit titles like 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2, 3D Gunstar Heroes and of course 3D Streets of Rage 2.

The screenshots give you a taste of what the game will look like on your 3DS before it comes out later this year. It seems that M2, the developers behind this port will be sticking with the original aspect ratio of the game instead of working on making this titles widescreen. I now expect the same will happen with 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and 3D Gunstar Heroes. Also nice to see Yuzo Koshiro gets that big credit under the SEGA copyright like always. A few other things we know is that the game will support local multiplayer (if both 3DS’ have a copy of the game) and a new Quartet mode that allows you to play a single player mode with all characters.

The crossover chaos continues in Project X Zone 2: Brave New World for Nintendo 3DS

Project-X-Zone-1

Project X Zone, the 2012 crossover for the Nintendo 3DS which threw together SEGA, Bandai Namco and Capcom characters into an epic adventure, is set to return! According to a report from website e-duessee, a sequel is in the works for the 3DS entitled Project X Zone 2: Brave New World. The article itself is a report of an April 7th Bandai Namco press event held in Milan at which the game was announced alongside another unannounced title, Saint Seiya: Soldiers’ Soul for the PS4, PS3, and PC. The original article has since been edited to remove the mentions of the games (whoops!) but thankfully NeoGAF caught it before the removal.

What are your thoughts on another Project X Zone title? Have any characters you’d like to see make an appearance? I’m hoping to see Mega Man, Pac-Man and Sonic, as well as an expanded SEGA cast including Ryo Hazuki and some 1980s characters.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate gets free DLC update with Sonic themed gear

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate‘s free Apirl DLC update is out now and part of the update is Sonic the Hedgehog gear for your Palicoes (cat like creatures that can go on missions with you). It seems to unlock the gear you will have to overcome a series of new missions (included for free in the update) that are sometimes very punishing. Last month’s DLC had The Legend of Zelda items and the missions to unlock the items where very hard, so let’s hope that Capcom isn’t going to make us suffer for Sonic the Hedgehog goodness. The update comes with:

  • 14 New quests
  • 2 New weapons
  • 3 Complete armor sets
  • 4 Palico weapons
  • 7 Palico armor sets
  • 1 Bonus Palico: Blue Pal
  • 4 Guild Card backgrounds
  • 2 Guild Card pose
  • 13 Guild Card titles
  • 1 Poogie outfit: Vagaboar

You can check out more information on Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and its DLC over at Capcom-Unity. So, how many of you guys are playing Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and how are you liking it?

SEGA shutting down service for Initial D Perfect Shift Online on 3DS

ISO
SEGA Japan has announced that they will be shutting down online services
for their free-to-play 3DS game Initial D Perfect Shift Online come this June 30thLast time we heard from SEGA they where bragging that the game was a success with over 500,000 downloads, but this is was most likely shut down due to SEGA working on a sequel (announced last year).

So what will happen if the service ends and you still have the game on your Japanese 3DS? You can continue to play the game as long as you want, but the game will be offline only.

How SEGA recorded authentic sounds for their console based 3DS themes

sega-3ds-theme-1
Yosuke Okunari, producer behind the M2 3D Classics remakes and the newly announced SEGA themes for 3DS has posted behind the scenes pictures on how they got authentic console sounds for those themes. As seen above where they recorded the sound for the Dreamcast 3DS theme, I guess they start by using a really dirty and used Dreamcast to get the most authentic sound (how long has this console been left out in the sun!).

According to Okunari’s twitter post they went through 20 games for the SG-1000 before they settled at what boot up sound they liked the best, if the picture indicates anything they went with ‘Congo Bongo‘. Seems that SEGA has been very authentic lately with the sound of their 3DS stuff and that’s always nice to see.

Nintendo 3DS gets SEGA Dreamcast and SG-1000 themes in Japan

The more SEGA themes Japan gets, the more I want to just import a Japanese 3DS so I can enjoy them. This month’s themes are easily some of the coolest. The Dreamcast theme is based around the system’s own menu, and even plays the mechanical whirring and VMU beeping that fans are familiar with. Less familiar is the theme’s background music, which is lifted from the Japanese-only browser disc Dream Passport.

The SG-1000 theme is pretty cool in its own right. Aside from being based on SEGA’s very first home system, the theme also displays screenshots from a variety of games in the background. The music might be familiar to any hardcore Sonic Team fans with an emulator (or the system and a Japanese television if you’re crazy) since it’s taken from Girl’s Garden, Yuji Naka’s first game. Checkout the theme below!

Both themes are available on the Japanese 3DS’s Theme Shop for 200 yen/$1.50. There is still no word on these themes coming stateside.

SEGA published SRPG Stella Glow gets first gameplay footage

A few days ago we posted that Stella Glow, an SRPG 3DS game was being published by SEGA and developed by Imageepoch. Outside of a few screenshots, we didn’t really know what the game would look like in action, until now. Above is the brand new trailer showing off some anime cutscenes and later on the first gameplay.

The in-game graphics remind me a lot of Imageepooch’s last game they created with SEGA titled 7th Dragon, more specifically the sequel called 7th Dragon 2020. The game is set to release in Japan on June 4th, no western release dates have been announced and seeing as Imageepoch’s past couple SEGA published games never made it west; I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Review: 3D Out Run (Nintendo 3DS)

OutRunReview

Out Run / Outrun (アウトラン) is a very important game in the history of SEGA, released back in 1986 on arcades and later ported to various consoles. Out Run was a massive success for SEGA, selling over 20,000 cabinets worldwide in its year of release. Almost 30 years later, we get a brand new port on 3DS with 3D Out Run. Is this port worth your time? Well, let’s talk about that…
