Sonic the Hedgehog Movie delayed into February 14, 2020

Are you surprised to hear that the Sonic the Hedgehog movie is being delayed? You shouldn’t, if you have been keeping up the studio announced it was redesigning the blue blur after the negative backlash the debut trailer received. Jeff Fowler posted the above image saying:

“Taking a little more time to make Sonic just right.#novfxartistswereharmedinthemakingofthismovie” – Jeff Fowler va Twitter

One of the biggest backlash from online personalities was the fact that the studio was going to make VFX artist and designers work overtime to fix a design issue that shouldn’t have been approved anyway. I guess his hashtag is telling people that no one was overworked or ‘harmed’ during the making of the movie. Do I believe it? Hard to say but wouldn’t be too shocked when negative stories pour out of the movie. Here is hoping that Paramount Pictures gets it right. I will say that seeing the new art that we posted above from the studio, it does seem that Sonic is now wearing gloves?

What are your thoughts on the the movie being delayed into February 14, 2020.

Sonic the Hedgehog live-action movie to get character design change after internet backlash

Sonic the Hedgehog director Jeff Fowler just tweeted out that he has heard the criticism and that you cant expect a change in Sonic’s character design.

No idea how much of a change we will be seeing, considering that the movie is set to release this upcoming November. Also the fact that this terrible design made it this far into production shows you how clueless Hollywood is sometimes. I guess we will be keeping you posted on all things Sonic Movie news…

Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Official Movie Trailer Debuts, Revealing Robotnik’s Final Form

We have been covering a lot of Sonic the Hedgehog movie news, including having the first reveal of Jim Carrey as Robotnik and revealing that the Sonic Movie trailer would hit the internet today (look above!). We also did a pretty popular SEGA News Bits video going over the leaked plot details (if you don’t mind spoilers!) and now we got the first official look at the movie! If you dislike spoilers, you might want to hold off watching the trailer, because towards the end they reveal Jim Carrey as Robotnik… but his final look that is supposed to be a surprise.

So what do you guys think of the debut trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie? Is it as bad as a lot of people have been predicting? So far the YouTube like/dislike ratio is mixed, leaning towards disliked.

More titles announced for the Mega Drive Mini and SEGA Genesis Mini, including World of Illusion, Earthworm Jim, Super Fantasy Zone, and more!

SEGA has announced more titles coming to the SEGA Genesis Mini and the Mega Drive Mini. A total of 10 more games have been announced separately between the North America/Europe lineup and the Japanese lineup; 6 shared between the two lineups, 3 exclusive to the western consoles, 4 exclusives for the Japanese console, and the previously announced Sonic the Hedgehog 2 being confirmed to appear on the western consoles. Arguably the most notable titles to note here are the Disney titles Castle of Illusion and World of Illusion, as it confirms some licensed titles will also appear in the SEGA Genesis Mini selection.

Okay, so it’s not groundbreaking but it does confirm that SEGA decided that after Sonic Forces the franchise should continue. On this SEGA News Bits, Barry and George discuss what worked and what didn’t work in past 3D Sonic games and what they would like to see from the next Sonic game in development.

Sonic the Hedgehog live-action movie character design leaks!

Thanks to an overly enthusiastic staffer at Hagami/Carroll Inc. who wanted to update the company’s online portfolio, we now have an advance look at how Sonic will appear in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie from Paramount. The company had been tasked with creating a brand guidelines book and package design for the movie, as the images show off brand elements including graphics, character poses and the brand personality. The elephant in the room of course is the newly designed cinematic take on Sonic in all its glory. Fan reaction has been mixed, with comments ranging from “better than I expected” to “okay” to gifs of people jumping from windows.

Personally, I think it looks awful and cannot wait for the SEGA News Bits video where George and I pick apart the blue little guy. In the meantime, check out the gallery of images below and share your own opinions in the comments.

IDW to give Sonic the Hedgehog comic characters Tangle and Whisper their own mini-series

We’re a dozen issues and one video game adaptation special into IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog comic series, and now we know what the first mini-series will entail! Via IDW’s April solicitations came the reveal of an issue #0 of “Sonic the Hedgehog: Tangle & Whisper”. The preview issue is said to give a sneak peek at their upcoming mini-series adventure and includes a recap of “season 1” of the main Sonic the Hedgehog comic (since when are comic books seasons?).

This news is notable as it shows IDW is ready to branch out with the Sonic series with mini-series (something IDW is well known for) and that they are willing to give original characters the spotlight. By comparison, it took Archie two years into their Sonic run before they gave Princess Sally Acorn her own mini-series, and that was the first and last time Archie gave a character not derived from the games their own comic book.

After the break you can read the description of the mini-series preview comic. The mini-series is due out this summer.

SEGA in the Media: Sonic the Hedgehog movie gets a mention at the Golden Globes

The Golden Globes happened over the weekend, and surprisingly the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie got a mention in a short back and forth between the hosts and Jim Carrey. In the clip, Jim is told by the hosts that because he is nominated for television that he needs to move from the film seating section. Carrey counters, pointing out that he will be in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie in November. However, host Andy Samberg counters that Jim can sit in the film section next year noting “I’m sure it will be nominated.” Of course, the joke is that the Sonic movie will not be nominated for a Golden Globe and everybody has a laugh at the expense of the movie.

Look, I’ve seen several fans and fan sites defend the clip saying the joke wasn’t about the Sonic movie looking like it will be awful but about Jim sitting in the wrong section. I personally don’t care if people make fun of the upcoming Sonic movie, because I think it looks terrible and Paramount and SEGA deserves the blowback. But to think that the above clip isn’t making fun of the movie is just silly.

Sonic the Hedgehog movie teaser and poster revealed – “Mr. SEGA, are you serious?”

I think the reaction from a Japanese Sonic fan sums up my feelings on today’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie reveal: “Mr. SEGA, are you serious?”

Revealed as a motion poster by IGN, the video features a blue blur not unlike what we saw in the old Sonic 4 teasers. The blur eats through a path of rings which don’t quite make the correct sound we’ve known for the past 25+ years. Finally, the movie Sonic stops, hidden and shadow, and he looks… oh god. So, instead of opting for the tried and true design that has suited the character since 1998 (if we’re going by the modern design), Paramount opted for a bizarre hyper realistic design. Sonic is very hairy, has human proportions, weird little eyes and shoes that are in no way his signature sneakers. This looks bad. Very bad.

IGN’s has a lengthy interview with the filmmakers, and this bit jumped out at me:

The most challenging part of Sonic’s updated design isn’t revealed in this teaser: his eyes. The filmmakers struggled with how best to depict Sonic’s eyes because often he’s only seen with one, and that wouldn’t translate well to the live-action movie.

“I don’t think SEGA was entirely happy with the eye decision, but these sorts of things you go, ‘It’s going to look weird if we don’t do this.’ But everything is a discussion, and that’s kind of the goal, which is to only change what’s necessary and stay true to the rest of it,” said Miller. “He’s not going to feel like a Pixar character would because I don’t think that’s the right aesthetic to make it feel like part of our world.”

Really? Sonic’s eyes would not translate to live action? Have the seen the countless CG cutscenes? The many times a 3D Sonic has appeared in real world settings (Sonic Boom adverts, Progressive Auto Insurance adverts)? How does a real world setting change how you’d depict a 3D model of an iconic character like Sonic? He could easily appear in his traditional design and nobody would complain. I also like how they ignore SEGA’s feelings towards their design. Smart move, right? Ignore notes from SEGA on Sonic’s design.

Dear god, this movie…
