Free-to-play mobile Phantasy Star game out in Japan

Mobage members from Japan today will be able to get their hands on Phantasy Star Eternal Hunters, a free-to-play mobile game.

The game has you playing as a hunter, who has to investigate a crashed ship. You have to gather reports and all that hunter like stuff. The game changes it up by changing enemies depending on where your GPS location on your phone says you are.

To celebrate the launch, SEGA has released a tie-in item for Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity. The only way to obtain the item is to defeat and gather reports from monsters in Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Fukuoka and Sapporo. After you kill them, they will give you a code. Item pictured below.

Fan game Golden Axe Myth up for download

Here is a game we totally missed coming out, possibly due to all the news about Phantasy Star Online 2, Sonic Generations and SEGA taking down Streets of Rage Remake.

The game is supposed to be a fan prequel to the originals. It was created using Open Beats of Rage engine, so it’s technically a mod to that engine. Check out the fan game, it’s not as well put together as Streets of Rage Remake, but still a fun play through for fans.

SEGA Europe gearing up for Sonic’s 20th with back-to-school merchandise

2011’s the year that Sonic turns 20, and SEGA Europe’s making sure that everyone knows it. Heading to retailers in the UK and Ireland this summer are Sonic backpacks and other back-to-school stationery items. Several shops have already placed orders for the Blueprint-designed stationery, including WH Smith, Tesco, Debenhams, Morrisons, and Next.

“I believe there is still a vast untapped potential for licensing based on games, and we will see an increase in overall sales as more retailers start listing the stock and see the results in their sell-through numbers.”

-Sissel Henno, head of brand licensing for SEGA Europe

I imagine this is only the tip of the iceberg. Expect to hear much more about Sonic merchandise in the coming months, especially as his big 20th Anniversary game gets closer to release in the back quarter of this year.

See Modern Sonic’s Green Hill Zone in FULL!

Thanks to a new Takashi Iizuka interview with French gaming website Gameblog.fr, additional gameplay footage of both Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic has been released, playing during and after the interview. While I’ve yet to figure out what Iizuka is saying, it doesn’t sound as though there are any bombs dropped. What is way cool about the video, however, is that we get to see the final portion of Modern Sonic running though Green Hill Zone. I speedily stitched together the available footage to create a full run of the stage. Enjoy!

New Hatsune Miku project reveal on the 28th

SEGA is set to reveal a new Hatsune Miku project they have been working on, most likely to be Project Diva 3. Could this be the first entry to the series on the NGP?

I guess we will find out in a few days. Isn’t it great? Another Japanese game we won’t get in the west. I guess you should be happy that Sony hasn’t sued all import stores.

From what I can gather this trailer highlights multiple DLC releases including six new ‘Hard EX’ missions which will release for 200 Yen ($2.40) each and two additional ‘Story Episodes’ at 600 Yen ($7.30) each.
The Story Episodes will allow you to play as fan favorite characters such as Alicia, Wekin, Isara and Edy as well as some new weaponry.

Meanwhile here we are in the West still waiting for the vanilla game, hurry up Sega!

PSO2 livestream now live! [Update]

[Update: It’s over! I’m desperately trying to find a video of the trailer that was shown, but in the meantime you can look at my low quality screenshot!]

Well… it’s not exactly PSO2 just yet. Just a bunch of Japanese people talking and playing PSP2… but this is where the PSO2 footage is supposed to appear. So keep your eyes peeled!

This isn’t the official stream btw, just a fan stream of the official stream. So you don’t gotta worry about limits or moonspeak!

SEGA promotes Japan relief auctions with free Dreamcast PS3 theme

[American Theme/European Theme]

If you didn’t know, SEGA is selling tons of rare swag on ebay. Nice right? To help promote this, they are giving a free PSN theme away. The theme comes in two flavors, European and American.

What is the difference? The European Dreamcast had a blue swirl, thus the theme is more blue and the American had an orange swirl, making the theme more orange.

Since PSN is down, download below:

Someone buy me a copy of Shenmue signed by Yu Suzuki, please?

Pier Solar: The First Few Hours

I confess, when I first heard about Pier Solar back in 2008, I was both excited and cautious. On one hand, the prospect of playing a new game on my Genesis sounded like an awesome proposition. On the other, I simply didn’t believe the game would get done. As the originally announced release date faded into memory, I assumed the game had simply gone the way of many a Dreamcast indie project, and forgot about it.

The game surpassed my expectations though, and has actually made it all the way into my Genesis. Even as I ordered it, I had my doubts about the game being anything more than a stereotypical role playing game that just happened to be on the Genesis. Has the game been able to surpass my expectations again?

Conduit 2 – Launch Trailer

Yep, it’s the Conduit 2 launch trailer. ‘Best Wii Shooter of 2011’ so says the trailer.
Apparently it’s still a race if you’re the only one running.

In all fairness it actually looks quite good! The first game didn’t really appeal to me, but this one looks much better.

tri-Ace shows off new engine, could this power Resonance of Fate 2?

When Resonance of Fate was first announced, SEGA pledged ten years of support for the franchise. I assume this meant they were going to make more than one of the games. The game received a good metacritic score, but didn’t sell a million copies. SEGA has been tight lipped and tri-Ace hasn’t really announced any new games being developed…

But they did update their website with a new engine they are working on. The scene being rendered is not a specific game, just used to show off the new lighting and shading. If you read up on it, it says it was rendered running real-time on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, at 720p. More info can be found here.

So, the question is, would many of you guys be interested in a sequel to Resonance of Fate running on this engine?
