SEGA shows off A Certain Magical Virtual-On box art

ACertainMagicalIndexBoxArt

Check out the official Japanese box art for A Certain Magical Virtual-On, an upcoming game being released on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. The game features characters from the light novel franchise A Certain Magical Index and SEGA’s arcade franchiseCyber Troopers Virtual-On in a epic cross-over competitive game.

A Certain Magical Virtual-On Japanese box art features Touma Kamijo (A Certain Magical Index) and Virtuaroid MBV-707/VSL “Temjin 707” (Virtual-On). I think the box art is just OK, nothing special and feel that the art style differences between Virtual-On and A Certain Magical Index really clash on the cover. For example Temjin 707 looks rather 3D while Touma Kamijo on the other hand is a typical anime drawing. As for the game, its set to launch on February 15, 2018 in Japan on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. SEGA West hasn’t announced a western release date as of this posting.

Check out the opening animation for A Certain Magical Virtual-On

On February 15, 2018 SEGA’s Virtual-On series makes its return with A Certain Magical Virtual-On, a crossover between the giant robot fighting series from SEGA and the A Certain Magical Index light novel from Dengeki Bunko. The collaboration began when the two crossed over for a light novel back in 2016 to celebrate Virtual-On’s 20th anniversary. The game is said to be an adaptation of the light novel, and the core gameplay is 100% what Virtual-On fans have come to expect from the series, so don’t worry about this not playing like a Virtual-On game despite the crossover.

Via SEGA of Japan’s YouTube channel comes the game’s full animated intro, seen above, produced by the Japanese animation studio J.C.STAFF. The intro looks great, and reminds me of the days when SEGA Saturn games would launch with their own animated intros. No word yet on a western release, but given how import friendly SEGA of America has been thanks to the Atlus staff I would not rule it out. Still, if you just want to import the game it will be available 2/15 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in special edition releases. You can pre-order both titles now from Play-Asia:

A Certain Magical Virtual-On shows off gameplay, looks amazing

I wasn’t so sure on how to feel about the upcoming A Certain Magical Virtual-On, a game that is set to cross over A Certain Magical Index manga with SEGA’s own mech franchise Cyber TroopersVirtual-On. I was a bit on the edge because I thought the game might have been a licensed cash grab. Also the game didn’t debut in arcades, like most Virtual-On previous entries, seeing all these broken traditions got me nervous.

Now that SEGA went out and showed us a lot more of A Certain Magical Virtual-On, I’m excited to get my hands on it. While it looks great in motion and really kept the feel of the Virtual-On franchise, the games have always been about its controls. We will be having hands-on previews of A Certain Magical Virtual-On very soon, but for now lets enjoy the gameplay presented above. What are your thoughts?

The Persona Q series is developed by the same team responsible for the Etrian Odyseey series that focuses on dungeon crawling and a super deformed art style with the first game focusing on Persona 3 and Persona 4 characters. Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir tops Japanese sales chart on debut week

OdinSphereLief
Atlus seems to have made the right choice bringing back Odin Sphere, as Liefthrasir has topped the Japanese sales chart on its debut week. The game took the number one and two spots, with the PlayStation Vita coming in at first with 43,394 sales and a close second on the PlayStation 4 with 42,263 units sold. That’s right, the PlayStation Vita is still big in Japan.

As for the PlayStation 3 version of the game, that came in at tenth place with 9,771 units sold. That means that all together Odin Sphere: Liefthrasir sold over 95,428 units in Japan in the span of three days. Impressive for the region and it being a remake. What happens when you mix popular light novel characters and popular SEGA franchises in one crossover fighting game? You get Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax,a crossover fighting game developed by Japanese game developers French Bread & Ecole Software who have worked on the Melty Blood series. The game is published by SEGA and features various light novel characters from ASCII Media Works’ Dengeki Bunko imprint as a celebration of the publication’s 20th anniversary. Not only does the game feature light novel characters, SEGA fans will be very pleased to see what this game has to offer when it comes to fan service. Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Future Tone to run at 1080p and 60fps on PS4

HatsuneMikuFutureTone
SEGA has revealed during their Tokyo Game Show panel, oddly enough named ‘Sega feat. Hatsune Miku Project’, that Hatsune Miku: Project  Diva Future Tone will run at 1080p at 60 frames per second on the Playstation 4. If you didn’t catch the announcement for this title, its a console port of the long requested Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Arcade game.

SEGA also confirmed that Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Future Tone will be coming out after Hatsune Miku: Project Diva X (yes, there are two Hatsune Miku games in the works) which is due out on out for Playstation Vita in March.

Another small mention was the Playstation VR enabled ‘Sega feat. Hatsune Miku Project: VR Tech Demo’, which SEGA says if there is enough positive fan feedback that they will consider making it a full product.

As evidenced by the trailer and screenshots, the game features 3D environments and mechs and 2D hand drawn characters. The result is lovely, as the game looks like a drawing come to life. The game is currently only announced for Japan, but we would not be surprised if it made its way West.

SEGA has no plans to release the PS4 version of Phantasy Star Online 2 outside of Japan

PSO2DealWithIt
The people at Kotaku has contacted SEGA about the possibility of the Playstation 4 version of Phantasy Star Online 2 coming West. This is the response they recieved from a SEGA representative.

“SEGA is currently not planning to release the PS4 version of Phantasy Star Online 2 outside of Japan,”

It has been over 3 years since SEGA announced at PAX 2012 that they would be bringing Phantasy Star Online 2 over from Japan on the PC and Playstation Vita. Then, silence. We got a few generic ‘it’s still coming’ answers from them, but this is the first time they have officially denied its Western release.

Talk about not caring about their own fan base, huh? It’s hard to stay positive when the Western branches don’t care about their core fanbase or their in-house Japanese IPs. Then when they do finally get around to releasing it they are surprised at the success these Japanese in-house developed games have. No shit! With this and the recent announcement that they reskinned ‘Puyo Puyo Quest‘ into some generic food puzzle game, SEGA is really making it hard to be a fan.
