Classic SEGA Ads: Segata Sanshiro is in love

The internet has made much ado about Chuck Norris as the manliest man who has ever lived, but that’s only because they are too afraid to admit that Segata Sanshiro will one day beat them all up for not diligently playing their SEGA Saturns.

Segata Sanshiro is the definition of an unstoppable force, the embodiment of an unmovable object, but even he is susceptible to love, as this Sakura Taisen 2 commercial shows. That said, it takes a true to be willing to gleefully play in a pile of Sakura pedals with his beloved. Do not be comforted by this ad though, non-Saturn owners. After Sakura Taisen Week is over, he will come for you all…with a vengeance.

Retro Review: Sakura Taisen 2

After the first Sakura Taisen game was met with commercial and critical success in 1996, a sequel was inevitable. The SEGA Saturn, though successful in Japan, was hemorrhaging money abroad, making a sequel to one of the company’s few late 90s success stories all the more important. So, SEGA collaborated with RED again to produce a sequel.

Sakura Taisen 2: Kimi, Shinitamou Koto Nakare, which roughly translates to “Beloved, You Must Not Die” was released for the SEGA Saturn on April 4th, 1998 as a three disc set. Introducing two new characters and improved game play, it remains the most successful game in the series. It sold over half a million copies, making it the second best-selling dating sim of all time. It was re-released for the SEGA Dreamcast two years later with brand new features that showed what the system was capable of.

New Shining video game is an arcade fighting game, check out the trailer

Today SEGA announced the latest entry in the Shining franchise, Blade Arcus from Shining, a 2D arcade fighting game. Tony Taka, the man responsible for most of the franchise’s character designs of the last decade, has returned to design the characters for this game. I’m disappointed by this bit of news, as I don’t care for his work in the franchise.

The game will feature characters from Shining Blade, like Sakuya and Rage, as well as least two new characters. Blade Arcus from Shining is set to come out this summer in Japan.

The SEGA Five: Ways to experience Sakura Taisen

Sakura Taisen has had an interesting history in the West. Though the first four games that make up the core of the franchise were never localized, the series’ anime and manga adaptions were. As a result, Sakura Taisen was able to establish a cult following in the West, one strong enough to spawn continued interest in the franchise from both fans and corporations years later.

Thanks to the efforts of these companies and fans, there are now several ways for western audiences to get a taste of the franchise. Though they are not all complete and they are not all convenient, these are the five ways you can experience the biggest SEGA franchise to never officially make it West.

This is the Westerner’s guide to Sakura Wars.

Nintendo Direct features new Bayonetta 2 trailer

Today’s Nintendo Direct was light on SEGA, at least for the West, however we did get a new Bayonetta 2 trailer which features some of the returning secondary characters in their new costumes as well as a new character, a young boy with dreadlocks stuck in Purgatorio with Bayonetta. Boss battles and a sweet surfing scene are shown off as well. All in all, an exciting trailer for the game. The release date is still slated as being later this year, and not much else is revealed beyond that. The Japanese Nintendo Direct revealed the same trailer, as well as Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed and Hero Bank.

Guilty Gear Xrd Coming to Japanese Arcades February 20th

Arc System Works’ Guilty Gear Xrd website and a recent Dengeki Online posting confirm that Guilty Gear Xrd will be arriving on Japanese arcades on February 20. An earlier rumor suggested that wide arcade release in Japan would not arrive until March, but that can now be put to rest. Check out the above video to see the arcade opening featuring some gameplay in its cel-shaded, 2D-imitation glory.

Guilty Gear Xrd concluded its last round of location tests this past week. PS3 and PS4 releases are currently planned for the game, though there is not much word on a release schedule for the platforms beyond “2014.” Localization of some form for the games has also not been announced, but most every Guilty Gear release, namely the main entries and version updates, have not missed localization, and Arc System Works’ US Twitter account last year took note of a petition to develop a Wii U version, so the fan demand for some localization seems to be recognized.

Guilty Gear Xrd’s arcade version was developed using SEGA’s RingEdge2 arcade system board, and was regularly location tested at SEGA arcades. SEGA will also have a role in publishing the arcade version. SEGA owned the rights to Guilty Gear for a couple of years once SEGA and Sammy merged since Sammy owned the franchise, though now Arc System Works has claimed complete ownership of the IP.

You can now save up to 85% on some of the best Total War games, if you are a SEGA fan and haven’t tried the series out, you might want to check out this sale. I recommend trying Total War: Shogun 2 to start off.  I know there have been a few friends that have wanted to try this franchise out and now that the prices on this sale are decent enough, it won’t cost you too much to dip your fingers in.

The best part is that most of the Total War games use Steam and support all the features like cards, achievements and some even support the Workshop.

Typing of the Dead: Overkill ‘Love at First Bite’ Lexicon Pack released today

In celebration of Valentine’s Day, SEGA has released new DLC for Typing of the Dead: Overkill in the form of the ‘Love at First Bite’ Lexicon Pack. Priced at $2.99/£1.99/€2.49, the pack replaces the usual content with romantically themed words and phrases. Meanwhile, for those who have had enough of Valentine’s Day, on February 13th SEGA will release the free ‘Make War Not Love’ Lexicon Pack, which replaces all the words and phrases with battle cries and “motivational military speak”. So whether you’re in the mood for love, or want to head to battle, SEGA has you covered.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed to release in Japan on May 15th

Famitsu reports that SEGA has announced a Japanese release date for Sonic & All-Stars Racing Tranformed. The game, which released in the West on November 2012, is due for release on the Wii U and Playstation 3 on May 15th, 2014. While Famitsu’s article does not mention any exclusive characters for the Japanese version, it would be interesting if SEGA included Ryo Hazuki or Hatsune Miku in an attempt to appeal more to Japanese audiences. One interesting bit of information is the mention of Takenobu Mitsuyoshi being “the voice of SEGA”, could the Japanese version be adding an announcer or theme song to the game? We’ll reach out to Sumo for more info on this and the Japanese release of the game. Stay Tuned!

SEGA in the Charts: MediaCreate charts for Feb 03 – Feb 09 2014

It’s not been long since the last “SEGA in the Charts” posts where I reported the sombre news of SEGA’s rhythm dance title Umetaki 575 failing at retail. This week however we see one of SEGA’s big hitters arrive in the Japanese market, the latest entry into the Puyo Puyo series where SEGA mixes and matches it’s traditional puzzle series with the 80s classic Tetris. Launching on several SKUs (Nintendo 3DS, Wii U and Sony Playstation 3 and Vita) promises to be one of SEGA’s strong sellers this year, hit after the break to find out how well the title did.

Swingin’ Report Show #55: Localize It! with Segalization

This week’s episode is a special one, as Barry and George reunite to talk with Draikin and InTheSky of the SEGAbits partner site Segalization – a fan campaign dedicated to promoting the localization of SEGA games. While Western SEGA fans have enjoyed a number of great releases over the past few years, there are several titles that fans have never been able to experience due to SEGA not localizing hits from Japan for Western audiences.

Draikin and InTheSky talk about the inception of the Segalization campaign, and share their thoughts on how SEGA could go about localizing titles including Valkyria Chronicles 3, Yakuza 5, Yakuza Ishin, and Puyo Puyo Tetris. We also reveal another new partner site, Panzer Dragoon fan site The Will of the Ancients, and deliver the usual off topic banter. Enjoy the show!

SEGA Tunes: Sakura Taisen’s “Kimi Yo Hana Yo (Live)”

As some of you may remember, we’ve covered Sakura Taisen on Tuesday Tunes before, featuring music from both the game itself and its stage show incarnations. As a musical theatre buff myself, I am extremely jealous of Japanese fans for the dozens of Sakura Taisen related stage shows they’ve had over the years. After all, the closest thing us westerners have gotten to a proper SEGA related stage show is that awful Sonic musical from Australia.

A Sakura Taisen stage show is rather fitting though, given that the game itself stars performers who actively sing and dance on stage. The above video is from the 2003 Shichifukujin show, which features all the voice actors from the Sakura Taisen video games and anime reprising their roles on stage. From what I’ve seen of the show it looks pretty cool, and the performers themselves are definitely talented.

The song “Kimi Yo Hana Yo” was originally composed by Kouhei Tanaka for the end credits of Sakura Wars 4. The stage version features all of the games voice actors reprising their roles as members of Flower Division, including Akio Suyama as Captain Ichirou Oogami and Chisa Yokoyama as titular character Sakura Shinguji.
