The House of the Dead: Overkill Preview at Eurogamer Expo

The House of the Dead is one of SEGA’s longest running IP at the moment of writing this preview and the publisher is looking to continue the series with a port of its successful Wii title The House of the Dead: Overkill this time for the Playstation 3. Spoiler Alert: Giga.de Shows Insane Amounts of Sonic Generations

While Sonic fans have been eagerly awaiting an IGN preview of Sonic Generations, only to learn that it had been pushed back due to SEGA extending the embargo, German gaming site Giga.de has gone all out with a near 30 minute video preview of Sonic Generations. Within the first minute viewers are introduced to the interactive menu, and I gotta say it looks fantastic. It actually reminds me of Kirby’s Epic Yarn in the way you traverse it. Also included are full playthroughs of many stages. So if you want to avoid spoilers, just watch the first few minutes for a taste of the menu and then click “stop”.

Through the next few years, I would continue to explore the Dreamcast. Starting in 2003 however, my focus began to shift towards the Xbox, as games like Halo, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Metal Gear Solid 2, and Splinter Cell blew me away. Even while these new games mesmerized me, I would continue to look for new Dreamcast games to play, trying to find the next gem.

Review: Rise of Nightmares

Leave it to SEGA to be the first to dive in and attempt to offer something new and unique when it comes to a crazy peripheral like Microsoft’s Kinect. When the Kinect launched, SEGA released Sonic Free Riders. Free Riders was, in my opinion, an under-appreciated launch title that attempted to offer more than what other launch titles were offering. While Kinect Joy Ride and Adrenalin Misfits were pretty basic, and appealed to the family friendly party game crowd, Free Riders actually required skill and practice. The racer touted weapons that required a variety of actions to execute, different vehicles and stances and a number of hazards that again called for various actions to overcome. While not a perfect attempt, I applauded SEGA for what did work and for the boldness of attempting a Kinect title that featured so many methods of control. Now, SEGA returns to Kinect with Rise of Nightmares, a SEGA AM1 developed horror title which resembles SEGA’s famous The House of the Dead series. Like Free Riders, Rise of Nightmares puts a motion controlled spin on a well established genre (survival horror), promising a variety of weapons and actions as well as a Kinect first: body controlled free movement. Looks like Yakuza of the End is coming west as Yakuza Dead Souls

We have seen SEGA talk about Yakuza of the End before, they have said if it comes over it would have a new control scheme and title. It seems that it might come over after all, at least in Europe. The European Trademark has been filed by SEGA for Yakuza: Dead Souls, the logo is above.

I assume the game will come out sometime in 2012, so that means that SEGA officially has the best line up for 2012. Feels good being a SEGA fan.

Toys R Us: Sonic Generations for under $40, no excuses

The boys at Toys R Us have Sonic Generations for pre-order, for the low price of $37.49. That is pretty damn cheap. The issue here is that its not available in stores and is only online. But they ship your item for free.

Another issue is that the Casino Night pinball stage is exclusive to Gamestop pre-orders. That means that you will most likely have to wait for that DLC to hit PSN/XBLA for a price. But if you don’t care, this is an excellent price.

Sonic CD getting soundtrack release for Sonic’s 20th Anniversary

SEGA is going soundtrack re-release crazy in Japan. They already announced both Sonic Adventure soundtracks and also Sonic Heroes’ soundtrack getting a re-release. Now Sonic CD gets its time to shine, only this is not technically a ‘re-release’.

According to TSS, this is the first official release for the Sonic CD. The soundtrack is coming out November 23rd for ¥2400 (about £21 / $32).

House of the Dead: Overkill Extended Cut to support retro and modern 3D

So you, like myself, don’t own a sexy brand new HD stereoscopic 3D. It sucks, you can’t experience some games in their 3D mode. But SEGA has you covered, since House of the Dead: Overkill will support anaglyphic 3D. That means you can use those crappy 70’s paper, red and blue 3D glasses. Now that is the real grind house experience.

I uploaded a few screenshots, if you have some of those 3D glasses lying around, you can view them in 3D. If not you can view them anyway and type in the comment section how much you hate 3D.

Also confirmed in the press release (which will be attached to the post, after the jump) you can use a regular dual shock controller if you want! It supports Move for those that own the add-on.

Gordon Freeman joins Renegade Ops on the PC version

So Renegade Ops has been out on console for awhile, while the PC version isn’t going to come out until October 14th. Don’t worry, PC users will be able to drive as Gordon Freeman’s Buggy. Is this exclusive to PC? That has not been established yet.

“Working with Steam and the Half-Life team makes this game extra special. Gordon Freeman is a deeply-established character in the gaming world and we are proud to have him included in Renegade Ops.” – John Clark, director of PC Digital

If you play as the Freeman, you will be able to unleash Antlions as his special power. So if you use Steam, there’s a big chance you’re a Half Life fan and if you aren’t, you should be.

Retro Review: Dynamite Cop

Dynamite Deka is a series of beat em up games first introduced to American arcades in the mid-1990s. Renamed “Die Hard Arcade” to capitalize on the success of the movie franchise of the same name, the game was later ported to the SEGA Saturn, and to this day remains the only good 3D brawler to ever make it to the system. Dynamite Deka 2 would later be ported to the Dreamcast some years later, renamed Dynamite Cop. Is this game any good? Read on to find out.

The Weekly Five: Best “Post-Dreamcast” Games

When the Dreamcast breathed its last back in 2001, many thought it was for the best. “They’ll be more successful as a 3rd party publisher!” “They’ll be able to make more money since they’ll be on more systems!” But sadly, that wouldn’t be the case for a long, long time. In fact, only in the last two years has there been a big enough turnaround in quality. When Dreamcast died, much of the creativity and spark of the developers seemed to die with it, 2006 being the best example of Sega’s worst time in the industry.

But not all of it was bad. In fact, their initial outings on GameCube and X-Box were quite strong. Even during Sega’s worst times in 2003-2008, there were some diamonds in the rough. Continue on to see my top 5 favorite “post-Dreamcast” Sega titles from 2001-present.

If you have played past Sonic titles, you know that Sonic Team doesn’t go easy on the achievements. You will probably be wasting tons of hours to get all the achievements/trophies in their titles. This one seems to be no different.

Years of the Dreamcast Part 3: Shenmue

After watching the Shenmue trailer on my Dreamcast’s demo disc, and after seeing the outrage that the cancellation of Shenmue 2 received, I decided to pick Suzuki’s epic up. The actual game wouldn’t win me over so easily, though. Shenmue was unlike anything I had ever played. It was slow and rigid. The character couldn’t jump or do anything particularly interesting. What kept me coming back was the world and the story. It was unlike anything I had ever seen before. The cinematics put Sonic Adventure to shame. The storyline was almost like a movie.
