Binary Domain debuts at #2 in Japan

This week saw the release of several new games in Japan, with SEGA’s Binary Domain likely being the main point of interest for anyone reading this website. As reported by Eurogamer with charts from NeoGAF, Nagoshi’s cover shooter debuted at #2, selling around 73,683 copies on the PS3, with the Xbox 360 version evidently not making the top 20.

It was a stronger Japanese debut than SEGA’s previous third person shooter, Vanquish, and a solid start for a new IP in that territory, though Binary Domain isn’t likely to become the next Yakuza over there at this rate. New Love Plus from Konami took the #1 spot with 104,969 while Square-Enix’s rhythm-based Final Fantasy spinoff settled for 3rd with 67,206.

Full chart after the break.

SEGA teaming up with Capcom and Namco Bandai to develop 3DS game

As promised, Nintendo held their Nintendo Direct conference this morning, and undoubtedly the biggest piece of news to come from the event was the information that SEGA, Namco Bandai, and Capcom are teaming up to develop a 3DS game.

So far the details of the project are being kept under wraps, though a teaser site has been created, one featuring the intriguing image of a vault door being opened. (A retro franchise revival, maybe? Or a crossover?)

We’ll keep you posted on any new info that comes from this pretty epic-sounding collaboration.

On another note, Game Gear titles will be heading to the 3DS Shop Channel this March in Europe and Japan, while no North American date was given. Game Gear installments in the Sonic the Hedgehog and Shinobi franchises, as well as the dungeon crawler Dragon Crystal, are said to be among the first titles that will be available for download.

Yes Virginia, you can play most Sega PSP games on your Vita!….If you have a PS3.

Hello fellow Vita owners and congrats on your purchase! Now, if you’re a Sega fanboy like me, you may be dissapointed in the selection of Sega games available for PSP through the Vita store. There’s Crush for $4.99 and nothing else. You’re probably thinking “Is that all of the PSP games compatible with my Vita?” Well, the answer is…no! There are a ton more PSP games that work with the Vita that for some reason are not on their store. This includes almost all Sega PSP games with one huge exception. Keep reading to find out how!

Bionic Commando developer was working on Streets of Rage remake, screens included

Grin was the developer that earned lots of respect for succefully rebooting Bionic Commando with Bionic Commando Rearmed on XBLA, then later released on PSN and PC. After this success, Capcom ordered them to make a full priced game which wasn’t meet with much critical praise.

Though that didn’t slow the developer down; Grin was working back at Capcom trying to reboot the Strider franchise for them. The idea was that it was supposed to launch on XBLA, PSN and PC just like Bionic Commando Rearmed did. But the project was cancelled in 2009. So they moved on and looked for another company that wanted to reboot their IP and naturally came to SEGA. The remake was set for digital platforms only and like their last project, it was supposed to be a reboot like Bionic Commando Rearmed.

Nikkei reports that Seaman’s being revived on the 3DS

Hold onto your hats, SEGA fans! It looks like the world’s douchiest sea creature may finally be seeing a return…on the Nintendo 3DS. In what’s being cited as an initiative by Nintendo to bring other publishers’ classic titles to their handheld, Seaman has been said by Nikkei to be one such game. No other details were given.

We’ll keep you updated on this news as it unravels. The advantages to a 3DS Seaman title would include the system’s built-in microphone, its touch screen, and, assuming they go all out with this, you’d also of course get to see Seaman’s ugly face in full 3D!

Keep in mind that this is not yet an official announcement, but Seaman creator Yoot Saito’s hint back in 2010 that Seaman could very well be seeing a 3DS revival adds credibility to the story.

House of the Dead 4 for PSN took almost a year to port

So House of the Dead 4 is finally going to hit a home console, I have wanted a home version ever since I first laid eyes on it way back when SEGA released their ‘next gen’ trailer with Virtua Fighter 5 and (cough, cough) Sonic 06. The new PS3 port is built from the Lindbergh arcade board, the same board that runs Virtua Fighter 5, its supposed to make PS3 porting easy.

“It took almost a year to adapt The House of the Dead 4 for the console, from the initial game design to the product,” a Sega representative explained in an e-mail to Siliconera. “The main obstacles in converting The House of the Dead 4 from the Lindbergh board to the PS3 were the OpenGL and the data format conversion.  Also, the PS3 has only 256MB of RAM while the Lindbergh board has 1GB, making the conversion challenging.”

“We did more than simply upscale the resolution to 720p. We brought the game render buffer up to 720p as well,” says SEGA “This makes the graphic quality and resolution far superior to all of the previous versions. In addition, we have re-made almost all of the UIs [user interface] in HD resolution.”

House of the Dead III recently made its way to PSN, featuring Move support plus a ton of unlockables. I want to say as an arcade fan, I’m glad SEGA is putting in work on these ports. I think SEGA has had a bad reputation due to their Genesis and Dreamcast ports. I’m glad they are willing to sit and make this title look spiffy on screen.

SEGA making Virtua Fighter social game, Yu Suzuki’s studio to oversee development

SEGA has announced that they are making a social adaptation of the Virtua Fighting games on the popular Mobage platform. The game was announced as being called Virtua Fighter Cool Champ. Yes, I’m not making that up. Its called “Cool Champ”.

This Virtua Fighter spin off is going to be a card battling game that will feature characters and elements from the series. You can build up your character and fight against rivals. The game is being published by Epics and Yu Suzuki’s Ys Net Studio will be supervising them, along with SEGA who will supervise the project as a whole.

If you are a Mobage member, you will have access to the game on your phone… today! That’s right, are you a cool enough dude?

SEGA and Atlus’ parent holding company sign distribution deal

What does this big deal mean? Does it mean that Atlus will be publishing all those cool SEGA Japanese games West? Nope. Actually Atlus has inked up a deal for SEGA to distribute their games in Japan. Starting on April 2012, Atlus games will be hitting Japan under the true and blue SEGA logo.

It is already known that the deal will not effect digital titles and it is so far unclear of how this will affect Atlus’ publishing outside of Japan. The deal came because Atlus’ holding company, Index Holdings, has a constant decline in revenue and isn’t really able to support Atlus’ growth in its most important market. Should SEGA just buy out Atlus and call it a day or should this niche company stay where its at in the States?

More Sonic 4 Episode 2 Screens Revealed, Teaser Trailer Next Thursday!

Well, it appears SEGA Blog has finally acknowledged that Sonic 4 Episode 2 screens are out in the wild. But instead of rereleasing the same ol’ screens, they’ve shared a collection of new ones! Some show brand new areas in previously revealed zones, while others take place just moments before or after the XBOX.com screens. Some details include a new hummingbird badnik, the confirmation that special stages will be accessed as they were in episode 1 and that somebody has been building Eggman snow men. Check out the screens, and learn when the trailer will hit, after the break!

Yakuza: Dead Souls – Mini Game Trailer

Apparently killing zombies can be hard work. Personally I’ve always found it to be quite a breeze, either way the Yakuza like to unwind after a long day of slayin’ and what better way to unwind than with some mini games? I was worried that with Yakuza:Dead Souls being a spin off based around fighting off undead hordes Sega might have seen fit to drop the mini games. However I’m pleasantly surprised to see there are just as many mini games appearing in Dead Souls as ever. It seems that even in a zombie outbreak there is always time for a spot of fishing when you’re as badass as Kazuma Kriyu.

Yakuza: Dead Souls releases for the PS3 on March 13th in America and 16th in Europe.

Eggman and Other Video Game Baddies Cameo in a Disney Movie? Yup.

Disney’s 3D animated movie “Wreck-It Ralph”, slated for a November 2012 release, is very much like a “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” with video game characters. The film tells the story of Wreck-It Ralph, an arcade game bad guy who appears within a fictional 80’s arcade game called “Fix-It Felix Jr.”. Within the arcade game, Felix builds buildings, and Ralph destroys them. Sounds a bit like a cross between Donkey Kong and Rampage. However, just like in Toy Story, the characters have lives outside of their fictional roles and Ralph is having second thoughts about villainy, hoping to become a hero.

The movie has been said to feature cameos from real world video game characters, but up until now none have been revealed. In the latest issue of Disney’s D23 Magazine, a few behind-the-scenes photos are shown and in one image none-other than SEGA’s very own Eggman can be seen sitting with other video game bad guys including Bowser and Street Fighter’s Zangief! No idea what the scene is about, but I’d guess it’s a video game villain support group. Despite the blurry pic, Eggman seems pretty disinterested in the meeting. No word on Mike Pollock voicing the doctor, but it would be a crime if he didn’t. After the break, check out the full scan. Thanks to jennytablina of The Sonic Stadium Boards for the scans!

Binary Domain Multiplayer DLC to feature Akiyama, Majima and Goda!

Kazuma Kiryu is not the only character set to make the jump from the Yakuza series to Binary Domain. SEGA today has revealed free DLC skins for three other highly popular Yakuza characters in the forum of Goro Majima, Shun Akiyama and Ryuji Goda. Just like with Kiryu, each character will have either a government forces outfit, which is their default model, or a resistence fighter outfit. The characters will be released for PSN users in Japan starting with  Akiyama on February 28, Goda on March 6 and Majima on March 13. XBLA users will get all three characters free on March 13. For all the screenshots, hit the jump after the break and for additional information on the sponserships that will be found in Binary Domain, hit the Andriasang link for more info!

Sonic the Hedgehog is faster than lighting

Can you see Sonic going super speed? Most people would assume he would be a sexy blurry mess. Well, Reddit user josepheatsbrains used the power of the brush to bring this painting alive. Not a super difficult piece, but I like the look of brush strokes.

If you guys stumble upon any other great fan made projects, throw us a line or post them in the comment section!

Holy crap! Ten screens, boxart AND an expanded game description for Sonic 4 Episode 2 are available for viewing thanks to what can only be a mistimed release on XBOX.com.
