SEGA Reveals Sonic 4 Episode 2 Concept Art, Proving They Can Have Original Ideas

Well this is a surprise! SEGA Blog has revealed concept art from Sonic 4 Episode 2, and this time it’s not a palm tree! From the sound of it, each Friday two pieces of concept art will be revealed. One on the SEGA Blog and one on SEGA’s Sonic Facebook page. I have to say, I’m impressed! Sure they’re not jaw dropping, but they’re original. A blue tube thingy and a cute hermit crab badnik. What a nice way to end each Friday, keep ’em comin’ SEGA!

Edit: Now that I look at it, I realize that the blue tube thing is probably that spinning gimmick from Marble Garden. Original? Maybe not, but I loved the sound they made when you bounced on them.

London 2012 Fly-through Trailer

Check out the first trailer for the 2012 London Olympic Games! The trailer is a fly-through of the new Olympic stadium in London, recreated for people who are rubbish at sports to sit on the couch and pretend to be Olympians.

Worth noting we also see for the first time Sega Studios Australia’s new logo, pretty swish! Sega Studios Australia was previously known as The Creative Assembly Australia and developed some of the Total War games and expansions.

I hope they can find a way to innovate and make a good game out of the Olympics.

Sonic Generations Lost CG Intro

Leading up to the release of Sonic Generations, a number of trailers appeared showing various CG footage. Fans assumed that all of these elements would combine to be the game’s CG intro, however when the game released the only CG featured was the initial teaser footage of classic and modern meeting in Green Hill. I’ve combined all the CG elements that I know of into an extended “lost” intro. Enjoy!

Update: Revised the video to include a bit of new footage found in a Japanese commercial.

A huge amount of Sonic digital PC content available now!

What a huge morning for Sonic fans! Sega has just announced a bucketload of PC Sonic digital content available now. Sonic CD is now on steam! For a limited time, purchase Sonic CD and you get DLC for Spiral Knights that lets you dress your knight as Metal Sonic. Want more Sonic in your spiral Knights game? You can also purchase a Tails Knight! Also, Sonic 4: Episode 1 finally arrives on your PC as well as the DLC content for Sonic Generations. Talking about my Generations, there’s a demo available for that as well. Happy Sonic PC DLC day!

Yuji Naka spills the beans on a Sonic movie?

It has been revealed by Naka himself recently that he visited the Mazra Animation studios. The animators behind the Sonic Unleashed CGI scenes and Generations CGI ads. On both Twitter and Facebook he makes comments that sound along the lines that there may be a Sonic animated movie in the works.

Marza Animation Planet is made up of members from VE R&D (http://sega.jp/corp/saiyo/csjob/ve.shtml), which is a division he had a hand in creating. It looks like they’re working on a Sonic movie. Their offices seem nice, and they have a screening room / theatre there.

Whether it may just be some CGI for an upcoming game or a full blown movie remains to be seen. Sega has not made any comment on the matter so far.

New Rhythm Thief Trailer, 10 minute Preview

Rhythm Thief has gotten a lot of news today! Not only have we received possible news that it’s been delayed, and that it’ll be receiving a demo in the 3DS eShop, but it’s also gotten two new video releases! Above you can see the new trailer. Below is a ten minute preview of the game.

http://youtu.be/mwhZgv2Gx3s

I am really digging this game the more I see it. The many references to other SEGA rhythm games is just icing on the cake. I’m glad to see SEGA releasing games like this! Anyone planning on picking it up?

Yakuza Dead Souls Trailer: Who’s got your back?

Believe it or not Segabits readers, March will be upon us soon enough, and for SEGA fans in the West, the month of March has become synonymous with the arrival of new Yakuza titles. This year will see the release of Yakuza: Dead Souls, the zombie shooting spinoff with several series favorites banding together to gun down zombies in Tokyo. This new trailer features a pretty cool soundtrack and some zombie-shooting badassery.

Does this actually look promising? I still can’t make up my mind personally, but there’s always something fun about the release of a new Yakuza game. Yakuza Dead Souls will release March 2012, and SEGA seems to be doing their usual pre-order partnership with Gamestop, this time for some additional hostess outfits, guns, and items.

Rhythm Thief, Mario and Sonic Demos Hitting European 3DS eShop

\

It’s taken nearly a year, but 3DS demos are finally going to be available on the eShop in Europe this week. Of course we don’t care about Resident Evil Revelations and Cooking Mama 4! So, what SEGA games will be made available on the eShop? Rhythm Thief and Maro and Sonic. No word on when these games will be made available, but with both games arriving in stores soon it will hopefully be sooner rather then later.

Update: Mario and Sonic has been confirmed to be hitting the American 3DS eShop on January 26th. No word on Rhythm Thief.

Sonic 4 Episode 2 Comic Adaptation Points to April/May Release of the Game?

Those who bought the second issue of Archie Comic’s Sonic Super Special magazine (available now at most newsstands, bookstores and comic shops) have spotted a preview for the third issue which promises an exclusive Sonic 4 Episode 2 adaptation. The preview refers to Episode 2 as “SEGA’s hottest new game” and features Sonic, Eggman and Metal on the cover. Given that Archie’s Sonic Generations adaptation released the same week as the game itself, and the fact that the Sonic Super Special magazine is quarterly, AND the fact that one quater of the year from January is April/May, one could guess that the third issue containing the adaptation will release in April/May and that the game will also release at this time. This is, of course, speculation.

Rhythm Thief May Be Delayed

According to both GameStop and Amazon.com, Rhythm may be delayed until the end of March. Given that multiple retailers are delaying the game, it would appear that it is indeed happening. No official word from SEGA though, so there’s still hope that the game is still releasing as scheduled next month.

Rhythm Thief is an upcoming rhythm game for the 3DS, with an animation aesthetic similar to Professor Layton and homages to a couple other SEGA rhythm games, including Space Channel 5 and Samba De Amigo.

SEGA shows off new squad member, boss and stage for Binary Domain

For those who were thinking that the five characters that SEGA has been showing since Tokyo Game Show was your complete squad, think again, as today SEGA of Japan released shots of a new character never before seen, Shindo, a Japanese man who seems part of Mifune’s underground network. Also shown was a new stage, set in a car making factory as Dan, Cain and Shindo shot it out with the robots. Click the link for some a lot more screenshots, including a boss character that seems to be a red robotic ape and shots of the story itself.

Toshihiro Nagoshi stars in Black Panther 2 ad, tells all men to play his game

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=327MNKMQyEI
Toshihiro Nagoshi always said that the Black Panther PSP games was about aggression and being a man. He has decided to use the same idea for the sequel, Black Panther 2: Yakuza Asura Chapter. Who better to tell the men at home to play the new Black Panther than the most manliest man Nagoshi knows? That’s right, himself.

ESRB rates Sonic 4: Episode 2 for PC

SEGA hasn’t announced if they will be releasing Sonic 4: Episode 2 for PC, but it seems that ESRB has already spilled the beans early. If you recall, SEGA also kept quiet about the PC version of Sonic Generations, even though there was a ton of proof.

But for those PC players who didn’t get to experience Sonic 4: Episode 1, you might not have to worry. Awhile back we posted that it turned up in the Steam registry. Pretty much means that SEGA has a port of that one in the works for the PC.

Indie Genesis/Mega Drive Game Pier Solar Back on Sale!

Back in March I recorded an unboxing and preview of the indie RPG Pier Solar for the Genesis and Mega Drive. Initially the game released in late 2010 as a limited edition cartridge and enhanced CD for use with the SEGA CD, giving a Genesis game CD quality music. When the limited edition sold out, the developers quickly created the reprint edition. The reprint edition was in a sturdy plastic clamshell case, and featured a full color manual, as well as stickers and a poster, but lacked the CD (though the CD could easily be burned using files from the developer’s website).

After the reprint sold out, nothing was available outside of ebay auctions. But now, over ten months later, the reprint edition is back on sale and what more, there is also a snazzy soundtrack available (sold separately)! If you missed the first or second time, do not miss the third time that this game has been available! It’s a fantastic indie release, and far better a game than some official Genesis RPGs. Visit their shop here, the game is $49, and the soundtrack is $25.
