It’s official! SEGA Amusements confirms the all new Daytona for arcades!

Following yesterday’s rumor of a new Daytona USA comes confirmation from SEGA Amusements that Daytona is indeed back! The official SEGA Amusements twitter account shared an animated gif showing 1994’s Daytona USA, 1998’s Daytona USA 2: Battle on the Edge and for 2016 the above graphic showing the all new Daytona. The game will be playable at the IAAPA trade show in Orlando, and is set to hit arcades at an unknown date.

While we previously speculated that this could simply be a rerelease of SEGA Racing Classic with the Daytona license back in place, and that is not impossible, the way SEGA Amusements is teasing the new game with the first and second really makes this appear to be the third game in the series. It also appears that the name is simply Daytona, as evidenced by the graphic above and the Daytona hashtag. Had the name been something like Daytona 3 or the rumored Daytona Reloaded we probably would have seen PR using such a hashtag already.

So who is excited for Daytona’s return? At what level will this game be? A full third title or a rerelease of SEGA Racing Classic?

Via Arcade Heroes comes a juicy rumor that is sure to excite longtime SEGA arcade fans. IAAPA 2016, the arcade and amusement industry trade show, is a few weeks away and arcade companies are sending out press releases for what that have planned to showcase. We’ve already learned that SEGA Amusements plan to show off reworkings of Operation Ghost and Let’s Go Island, but the press release also mentions “… a showstopper video game, to be officially announced next week.”

According to Arcade Heroes, at the AAMA (American Amusement Machine Association) Gala it was said that SEGA plans to bring back Daytona USA with a game titled Daytona Reloaded. Could this “showstopper video game” be that rumored game? We’ll wait and see what SEGA Amusements announces this week, seeing as the press release went out last week. Fingers crossed!

SEGA Amusements announces Target Bravo: Operation Ghost, a new Ghost Squad arcade game

Via Arcade Heroes comes news of SEGA Amusements’ lineup for IAAPA 2016, the biggest arcade and amusement industry trade show. Headlining what SEGA Amusements plans to have on show includes a new entry to the Ghost Squad series entitled Target Bravo: Operation Ghost. The game is described as a new two-player game which sees players sitting in a 55″ theater cabinet. The game features new weapons, gadgets and equipment as well as the ability to start at any stage in the game.

Given Target Bravo: Operation Ghost contains the Operation Ghost name, which was the 2011 sequel to Ghost Squad, it is likely based on the title and description that this is a reworked version of Operation Ghost with a stage select, new items, a sit down cabinet and possible graphical enhancements being what sets it apart from Operation Ghost. So while this is not likely the true third game in the series, it is very cool to see SEGA keeping the franchise alive.

Strike Harbinger and Henshin Engine teams announce character crossover collaboration

HitSparks Games, the team behind Strike Harbinger, a Space Harrier and Phantasy Star inspired game heading to PC, consoles and arcades in 2017, have just announced a character collaboration with the Henshin Engine team. Henshin Engine is a new 2D action platformer developed for PC Engine/TG-16 and PC/Steam which is nearing its Kickstarter goal. Of note to SEGA fans, Henshin Engine has a Dreamcast stretch goal as well as the possibility of appearing on SEGA CD and/or SEGA Genesis.

The collaboration promises to make Strike Harbinger‘s Valiya Iriss playable in Henshin Engine via a cute pixelated version of the character, and the star of Henshin Engine Yuki Shirokawa will appear in the Strike Harbinger universe. It’s always cool to see teams collaborating and crossing over their characters, so it will be really exciting to see the result of this.

SEGA News Bits: Yakuza 6 Adds Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown To Play Spots Reaction

SEGA has announced that not only will they be adding the full version Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown as a play spot in Yakuza 6, but also a stripped down version of Puyo Puyo Tetris. While Yakuza 6 has only been confirmed for release in Japan, coming out later this year, that doesn’t mean we can’t talk about the amazing new play spots being added to the full game. SEGA Retrospective: The Deeper Arcade game – An oxymoron that became one of SEGA’s pillars

Arcade? When you ask the modern western gamer about such a concept, they will likely know about the genre of “arcade” in today’s market of downloadable games on console, PC and smartphone. Home and mobile ports of classic coin operated titles. But twenty years ago, people would visit actual venues to play games they could otherwise not to, offering considerable advantages in graphics, controls and cabinet designs.

Putting a coin into a machine should get you more enjoyment that you expect out of it. That has been the ethos of SEGA’s coin-up division for as long as existed. Immediate, visceral, thrilling; all of that should be encapsulated into the experience. One session should not go longer than 3 minutes. Often times games offer more depth as well, which is best summed up by the phrase “easy to learn hard to master” – which can be said of countless fighting games.

But different cultural perspectives can transform one concept considerably, and this can be applied to arcade games. Back in the glory days of arcades, westerners played in an arcade maybe once a month or even once a week at most. However in Japan, with its density of population, going to an arcade can become simply a part of your everyday routine, similar to how westerners play their games on home and mobile platforms. But what could one keep coming back to the arcade, time and again? Cards. Yes. Magnetic cards.

The game is now out in limited locations and we have gotten the trailer above to promote the arcade unit.

M2 wants to release Alien Syndrome as a ‘SEGA 3D Classic’

aliensyndrome-wallpaperIn the latest M2 interview with Yosuke Okunari, Kagasei Shimomura and Naoki Horii, which is posted over at the SEGA blog, the team talks about testing the 3D features with games like Alien Syndrome on the Nintendo 3DS.

KS: So rewinding a little bit, before we settled on Power Drift, we had a couple of titles to choose from for this. We talked about Alien Syndrome, Golden Axe, Turbo Out Run, and even Columns.

NH: (looks at the lineup list) These are pretty bold choices.
– I’d like to see Alien Syndrome someday. Stereoscopic 3D would be really effective in that game.

NH: Oh that game is amazing. We did a little test on it to see how it would turn out and it was great. Although, doing every single stage would be quite an effort.

SEGA Astro City arcade machine model from Wave now available for pre-order

Japanese toy and model import site Amiami has just listed Wave’s upcoming SEGA Astro City arcade machine model for pre-order. You might remember Wave produced the excellent Hang-On arcade machine model late last year. This new 1/12 scale model features the iconic Astro City (a refined version of the Aero City) multi-purpose arcade cabinet from 1993, complete with stool, game marquees and corresponding game visuals for the screen. Head on over to Amiami to place your pre-order, as the kit releases very soon – July 2016.

SEGA News Bits: Strike Harbinger First Impressions and Exclusive Gameplay Footage

Get ready, as our Strike Harbinger coverage continues! In this SEGA News Bits, Barry talks George through what it was like playing an early arcade build of Strike Harbinger during its debut at Galloping Ghost Arcade‘s SEGA Week. Created by the game development and design studio HitSparks Games, which is co-owned by Lead Game Designer Chris Tang and Senior Artist Kiyoshi Okuma, Strike Harbinger takes inspiration from classic SEGA titles including Space Harrier and Phantasy Star. The game is not due out until 2017, but this early first look at the game shows a lot of promise! Featuring unique controls and RPG-style elements, there is a lot more to Strike Harbinger than you’d think. SEGA launches ‘SEGA Arcade Game History’ interactive site


SEGA has launched an interactive site called ‘SEGA Arcade Game Historydetailing most of their published arcade machines, to celebrate the history of their long running arcade brands. The timeline starts with the release of 1973’s Pong-Tron and ends with the 2012 release of maimai. Obviously the site isn’t complete since SEGA has released more arcade games, their latest big one being SEGA-AM2’s KanColle that came out this year.

Going to be honest, I love when SEGA puts up sites like this celebrating their glorious arcade past. I wish SEGA West had a English version of this SEGA Arcade Game History on their site, but whatcha gonna do, right?
